Sacramento CalWORKs saying I missed recertification interview when I DIDN'T - benefits being cut off!!
I'm seriously about to lose it!!! Just got a discontinuance notice saying my CalFresh benefits are stopping because I 'failed to complete recertification' - but I DID do it in February! A worker called me, we did the whole interview over the phone, and I uploaded all the verification docs they asked for on the same day. Now this letter arrives saying everything is getting cut off?!? I've called Sacramento County 4 TIMES today and can't get through to a real person. Just automated messages and then it hangs up. My benefits are supposed to stop in 10 days and I have 3 kids to feed. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just go directly to the office on Bowling Drive? Will they even see me without an appointment? This is so frustrating because I literally did everything they asked me to do on time!!!

•So did she have to go in person to fix it? It's like they don't even look at the documents we submit!

Omg don't even get me started on Sacramento County! Every time I call I'm on hold forever then get disconnected. And when you go in person, the line is like 3 hours long. But honestly in your situation I'd just go to the office. Bring ALL your proof that you did the recert - any confirmation emails or screenshots showing you uploaded docs. And take the letter with you. Good luck!!

This is actually a common issue - sometimes the recertification interview gets recorded in the system but the documentation doesn't get properly attached to your case. Another possibility is your worker completed the interview but forgot to update your status in the system. Do you have any confirmation emails or text messages from when you submitted your verification documents? Or any case numbers from the February interview? Those would be very helpful to have if you go in person. If you go to the office, try to arrive early (before they open). And make sure to specify that this is an urgent matter because your benefits are being discontinued within 10 days - they should prioritize your case.

•I have screenshots of the confirmation page after I uploaded my pay stubs and rent receipt. And I saved the voicemail from the worker who called me for the interview. Hopefully that's enough proof! I'll definitely tell them it's urgent.

I had the exact same issue with Sacramento County last month! After trying for days to get someone on the phone with no luck, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in about 20 minutes. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when they get a real person. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE It saved me from having to take a day off work to go to the office. When I finally talked to a worker, they saw that my recertification interview was actually in their system but someone forgot to update my case status. They fixed it right away.

•Does that service actually work? I spend like 2 hours on hold with Sacramento every time I call.

•Yeah it definitely worked for me! The waiting on hold part is what kills me, especially with kids running around. This way I just got a call back when they had someone on the line.

•Ugh sorry, I have both and get them confused sometimes! The letter is actually about both CalFresh AND CalWORKs being discontinued. Same issue though - they're saying I didn't do the recertification for either one.

This happens more often than you'd think. Sacramento County is notorious for processing errors during recertification periods. Here's what you need to do: 1. File for a hearing immediately - you have 90 days from the date on the notice to request a state hearing. This is important because if you request it within 10 days of receiving the discontinuance notice, your benefits will continue until the hearing. 2. Gather all evidence that you completed the recertification (screenshots, confirmation emails, notes from the phone interview including date/time and worker name if possible). 3. Contact your worker directly if possible - check your past correspondence for their direct number. 4. If you can't resolve it by phone, yes, go to the office. The Bowling Drive office does take walk-ins, but be prepared to wait. Go early (7:30am) to get in line before they open. 5. Ask for a supervisor if the first worker you speak with isn't helpful. This is almost certainly a clerical error, but you need to be persistent about getting it fixed. The system is unfortunately designed to put the burden of proof on you.

•THANK YOU for this detailed advice. I didn't know about requesting a hearing to keep benefits going - that's super helpful. I'll file for that today online and then try to get through on the phone again. If that doesn't work I'll go to Bowling Drive tomorrow morning.

I had a very similar issue with Sacramento County back in January. My recertification was supposedly "incomplete" even though I did everything. What worked for me was going to the office AND filing for a state hearing at the same time. When you file for the hearing (you can do it online), make sure to check the box for "aid continuing" - that keeps your benefits going until they resolve the issue. I found that once I filed for the hearing, my case suddenly got attention and they fixed the problem before we ever got to an actual hearing date. Also - make sure you're clear whether it's CalWORKs, CalFresh or both that are being discontinued. The processes for fixing each can be slightly different, and sometimes one gets fixed but not the other.

•This is excellent advice. Filing for a state hearing often gets quick results because counties don't want to go through the hearing process if they can avoid it. Just make sure to request the hearing within 10 days of receiving the notice to ensure continuation of benefits while pending the hearing result.

the whole system is broken on purpose... they make it impossible to get help. my familys been on calworks for 2 years and every recert is a nightmare. seems like they always "lose" something or claim they never got stuff we sent in. its exhausting

•It really does feel like that sometimes. I don't understand how they can just ignore what's clearly in their system!

Let us know what happens! I'm curious if going in person works better than calling.

•UPDATE: I went to the Bowling Drive office this morning, waited 2.5 hours but finally got to speak with someone. They found my recertification interview notes and verification docs in the system! The worker said it was marked as "pending review" instead of "completed" for some reason. They fixed it on the spot and my benefits should continue without interruption. So glad I went in person with all my proof! Thanks everyone for the advice!
