CalFresh offices closed with no notice - anyone know what's happening?
I drove 45 minutes to my county CalFresh office this morning for my scheduled interview, but there was a sign on the door saying they're closed today! No explanation given. My recertification is due in 3 days and I can't afford to miss this deadline - my kids depend on these benefits for food. The automated phone line just says 'office hours 8-5' but doesn't mention any closures. Tried calling my worker but got voicemail. Has anyone heard about county offices closing? Is this happening everywhere or just my county? Getting really worried as my benefits will stop if I don't complete this interview!

•Did the security guard say how long it would last? Or if they're extending deadlines because of it? I'm in San Bernardino County, so seems like it might be statewide.

This is likely the quarterly statewide CalFresh training day that happens four times per year. County offices should have notified clients with appointments scheduled during the closure, but many counties are understaffed right now. Don't worry about your recertification deadline though - there's a process for this. Call your county's main CalFresh line (not your worker) tomorrow morning and explain you had a scheduled interview during the closure. They are required to reschedule you and provide a 'good cause' extension on your recertification deadline when the office was closed for a scheduled appointment.

•Thank you so much! That makes me feel better. I'll try calling first thing tomorrow. Do you happen to know if they'll document that I showed up for my appointment? I don't want them thinking I missed it.

•The system should already show the office was closed, but when you call, make sure to mention the date and time of your original appointment and that you physically went to the office. Ask them to note this in your case notes. Also, if you submitted your recertification paperwork (the CF37 form) already, your case is in better standing - they can't discontinue benefits if the delay is on their end, not yours.

their always pulling this crap!!!! my benefits got cut off last month cause of THEIR mistake and took 3 weeks to fix. try using benefitscal.com to upload any documents you have. at least then theres proof you submitted stuff on time. the whole system is rigged to make us lose benefits i swear

•Totally agree with uploading everything to BenefitsCal! I take screenshots too as proof. The system is a mess right now with all the staffing shortages.

I just called the main CalFresh hotline for my county (different from yours) and they confirmed there's a mandatory training happening today. All offices should reopen normal hours tomorrow. The representative said they're automatically extending deadlines for anyone with appointments today, and you don't need to do anything. But honestly, I wouldn't trust that - definitely call tomorrow to confirm your specific situation.

•I've worked with CalFresh for years helping clients, and this is partially correct. They usually do extend deadlines automatically, but the system doesn't always update properly. When you call tomorrow, specifically ask them to check if your recertification due date has been automatically extended in the system. If it hasn't, request they add a 'good cause' extension code. Also ask them to send you written confirmation of the new deadline by mail or email. Better safe than sorry with these administrative issues.

Anyone know when the quarterly trainings are scheduled for the rest of 2025? I want to mark my calendar so I don't waste time trying to go to a closed office.

This happened to me once before and it was a NIGHTMARE getting through on the phone the next day because EVERYONE was calling at once. I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to a real person quickly instead of waiting on hold for hours. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me so much stress and I actually got my issue resolved same day. Just thought I'd mention it because tomorrow's phone lines will probably be jammed with everyone from today's appointments calling.

•Thanks for the tip! I haven't heard of that service before but waiting on hold for hours is the worst, especially when I have to work tomorrow. I'll check it out.

•does it actually work tho? seems kinda sketchy to me

•It worked for me! Not sketchy at all - they just call the county and connect you when they reach a real person so you don't have to listen to that horrible hold music for hours. The call itself is still directly between you and the county worker.

For future reference, there are a few ways to check if county offices are closed before making the trip: 1. Most counties now post office closures on their websites and social media accounts 2. You can sign up for text alerts from many counties by texting JOIN to the county's notification number (should be on their website) 3. Some counties have started using the BenefitsCal messaging system to notify about closures Regarding your recertification: California regulations require counties to provide a good cause extension when the office is closed on the day of your scheduled appointment. Your benefits cannot be discontinued for missing an interview if the office was closed. Make sure to document today's attempted visit in your case notes when you call tomorrow.

•Thank you! I didn't know about the text alerts - will definitely sign up for those. And good to know about the regulations too. I'll make sure to mention that when I call tomorrow.

•Good point. I just checked the news sites for both Sacramento and San Bernardino counties and don't see anything about threats or emergencies. Seems like the training day explanation is most likely.

just to update everyone i called my county (sacramento) and they said its definitely the quarterly training and offices will be open tomorrow. they're automatically adding 10 days to any deadlines for people with appointments today. the lady was super nice about it and said theyre sending notices but they went out late.

•Thanks for the update! That's a relief to hear about the 10-day extension. I'll still call tomorrow to confirm for my county.
