Are CalFresh county offices open during Thanksgiving week? Need to submit verification ASAP

Does anyone know if the CalFresh office is open today? I just got a verification notice saying my benefits will stop if I don't bring in proof of my new job's income by tomorrow. I tried calling the county number but just got a recording and couldn't tell if they're closed for some holiday or what. Can I submit my pay stubs online instead? My EBT balance is super low and I'm freaking out about feeding my kids if my benefits get cut off because of their weird hours!

I'm in Sacramento County. I should have mentioned that, sorry!

They BETTER be open since they expect us to meet their ridiculous deadlines!!! I had a similar issue last month where they gave me 3 DAYS to submit income verification or get cut off. When I finally got through to someone they told me I could have just uploaded documents through BenefitsCal the whole time!!! Nobody tells us these things until it's almost too late. The system is DESIGNED to make people fail.

Omg I didn't know about BenefitsCal uploads! That would be so much easier than trying to get there in person. Thanks for mentioning this!

CalFresh county offices generally follow the standard government holiday schedule. Today is not a federal holiday, so Sacramento County's office should be open regular hours (8:30am-4pm). However, to avoid the trip, you can absolutely submit verification documents through your BenefitsCal account. Just log in, go to "My Documents" section, then "Upload Documents" and make sure you select the correct verification type from the dropdown menu. Take clear photos of all pages of your pay stubs. Also important - after uploading, call your worker to confirm they received them, as sometimes there can be delays in processing uploaded documents.

Thank you! I just checked and found my BenefitsCal login. I'm uploading the pay stubs now. Do I need to include anything else with them? Like write my case number on them or something?

Your case number should automatically be connected to the upload when you do it through your BenefitsCal account. Just make sure all information on the pay stubs is clearly visible (dates, gross amount, employer name) and that you upload all pages if there are multiple pages. It's also helpful to include a brief note explaining these are for your income verification request.

i had the same thing happen but my deadline was on a saturday lol. i just submitted everything on monday and it was fine. they give those deadlines but usually theres a grace period they dont tell u about

Don't count on that! My worker cut me off exactly on the deadline day when I was literally just ONE DAY late with my SAR7. Had to reapply and lost benefits for 3 weeks. It totally depends on which worker you get.

Hi there! I work with clients navigating CalFresh all the time, and I've seen this issue come up frequently. While the office should be open today, you're right that getting through on the phone can be nearly impossible. Many clients have had success using a service called Claimyr that helps you skip the phone wait times when you need to reach an actual CalFresh worker. I've had several clients use it when they needed urgent verification confirmation. You can check them out at claimyr.com or see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 That said, definitely upload your documents to BenefitsCal immediately as others have suggested. The verification deadline is the most important thing right now, and online submission creates a timestamp showing you met the deadline.

Thank you for the tip about Claimyr! I'll definitely check that out. I just uploaded everything to BenefitsCal but I'm still worried they won't process it in time. I might use that service tomorrow if I don't hear anything back.

Does anyone know if the verification deadline is when they need to RECEIVE the documents or when we need to SUBMIT them? I always get confused about this with my semi-annual reports too. Like if I mail my SAR7 on the deadline day is that enough or does it need to actually be in their hands by that date?

Great question. For verification requests like this, what matters is the submission date. If you submit online through BenefitsCal, the timestamp of your upload is your submission date. If you mail documents, the postmark date counts as your submission date. If you submit in person, it's the date you physically bring them in. Keep proof of your submission (screenshot of upload confirmation, mail receipt, etc.) in case there's any dispute about meeting the deadline.

UPDATE: I got through on the phone finally! The Sacramento office is open normal hours today. I uploaded my pay stubs through BenefitsCal as suggested and also called to confirm they got them. The worker said my benefits should continue without interruption as long as my income is within the limits. Thanks everyone for your help!

Im glad u got it figured out! Quick tip for next time - if u ever get those verification notices, respond RIGHT AWAY even if u dont have all the documents yet. U can submit a note saying u need more time to get the documents and they usually will extend the deadline. I learned this from my worker after the 3rd time i almost lost benefits lol. Also i keep a calendar with all my SAR7 and recert deadlines marked so i never miss them. This system makes it so hard to keep benefits sometimes!!

That's such good advice about responding right away even without documents! I never knew that. I'm definitely setting up calendar reminders for all my future deadlines now.

This is such helpful info! I wish they would tell people this stuff upfront instead of making us figure it out through trial and error. The calendar idea is genius - I'm always scrambling at the last minute with these deadlines. Do you use a regular phone calendar or is there a specific app that works better for tracking all the different CalFresh dates?
