Can I keep CalWORKs and CalFresh after my SAR 7 if I don't qualify for EDD? Single mom with 3yo
Just got my SAR 7 form in the mail and I'm kinda stressing out. I lost my part-time job last month and tried applying for unemployment (EDD) but got denied because they said I 'didn't earn enough wages to qualify.' I have zero income right now. It's just me and my 3-year-old daughter trying to survive. Will I still be able to keep getting my Cash Aid and CalFresh (food stamps) when I submit this SAR 7 with no income? Do I need to prove I applied for EDD even though I got rejected? Really worried about losing benefits right now since rent is due soon and we have literally nothing coming in. Anyone know what happens in this situation?

You should definitely still qualify for both CalWORKs and CalFresh with zero income and a child under your care! Having no income actually means you'll likely get the maximum benefit amount for both programs. On your SAR 7, make sure to clearly explain your job loss situation and include the EDD denial letter if you have it (if not, just explain what happened). The most important thing is being honest about your current situation - zero income with a dependent child is exactly what these programs are designed for. Also, since you have a 3-year-old, make sure you're receiving the CalWORKs diaper allowance - that's an extra $30/month you might be eligible for.

•Thank you so much! That's such a relief. I was really worried they might cut me off completely. I do have the EDD denial letter so I'll attach that. I didn't know about the diaper allowance though! I don't think I'm getting that - how do I apply for it? My daughter is still in diapers and they're so expensive.

i was in the same boat last year. no income with my son. as long as u report honestly ur fine. they actyally increased my benefits when i had no income. make sure u check the homeless assistance program too if ur struggling with rent, they can sometimes help with that.

•That's good to hear they increased your benefits! I'm honestly just terrified of getting cut off. The rent assistance sounds helpful - is that different from regular CalWORKs? My rent is $1750 and the Cash Aid doesn't come close to covering it.

You're absolutely entitled to continue receiving CalWORKs and CalFresh with zero income. In fact, this is when you need these programs most. A few important points: 1. Complete your SAR 7 accurately reporting zero income 2. You should include the EDD denial notice as verification if possible 3. Since you have a 3-year-old, you may be subject to Welfare-to-Work requirements if you've been on aid for more than 24 months. You'll need to participate in approved activities for 30 hours/week. These can include job search, educational programs, or training. 4. Ask about the diaper assistance supplement ($30/month) for your 3-year-old 5. Look into CalWORKs Homeless Assistance if you're at risk of losing housing Don't miss your SAR 7 deadline or your benefits will be discontinued automatically. Submit it even if you don't have all documentation yet.

•Thank you for all the details. You mentioned Welfare-to-Work requirements - I am supposed to be doing those hours, but I've been struggling to find childcare that works with their approved programs. My appointment with my WTW worker keeps getting rescheduled. Will they cut my benefits if I'm not meeting those hours right now?

Why don't you just get a job? CalWORKs isn't supposed to be forever. You should be looking for work not just collecting benefits.

•I was working part-time at Walmart until they cut my hours to nothing and then let me go. I'm actively looking for work every day, but it's not easy finding something that works with having a 3-year-old and no reliable childcare. The benefits barely cover half my rent - trust me, I'd much rather have a stable job.

•That's a really unhelpful comment. The 48-month time limit on CalWORKs already exists specifically because it's not meant to be forever. Single parents with young children are exactly who this program is designed to help during difficult transitions. And FYI, most CalWORKs recipients who can work ARE working or actively seeking employment as part of their required WTW participation.

THEY WILL TERMINATE UR BENEFITS IF U DONT REPORT PROPERLY!!!! i had this happen to me last year and i had to reapply all over again and wait weeks for approval with no money coming in. be super careful with that SAR 7 and double check everything. the county workers are looking for any reason to cut people off these days.

•This is not entirely accurate. While it's true you need to complete your SAR 7 correctly and on time, county workers are not looking for reasons to terminate benefits. Their job is to help eligible families receive aid. That said, the system can be strict about paperwork deadlines.

Have you tried calling your eligibility worker directly? I was in a similar situation and needed to talk to someone about my SAR 7, but every time I called the main line I got stuck in that automated system and could never reach an actual person. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person at the CalWORKs office in less than 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. It was so much better than waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected. My worker was able to tell me exactly what documentation I needed for my SAR 7 since I had no income.

•Omg thank you for this! I've been trying to reach someone for days. The automated system is a nightmare - it just keeps disconnecting me after 45+ minutes of waiting. I'll definitely check out that service because I really need to talk to my worker about the WTW requirements and making sure my SAR 7 is filled out correctly.

I'm a former eligibility worker, and I can confirm that having no income will NOT disqualify you from CalWORKs or CalFresh. In fact, it will likely maximize your benefit amounts. Here's what you should do with your SAR 7: 1. Complete every section accurately 2. In the income section, clearly write that you lost your job and were denied unemployment benefits 3. Attach any proof of your job loss (termination letter, final paystub) 4. Include the EDD denial letter if possible 5. If you have any expenses like rent or utilities, report those as well Regarding your 3-year-old: make sure to ask about childcare assistance through CalWORKs. You can get help with childcare costs while you look for work or participate in approved WTW activities. Also request the diaper supplement if you haven't already. Don't wait until the deadline to submit your SAR 7. Get it in early so if there are any issues, you have time to correct them before the end of the month.

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I do have my last paystub and the termination notice from Walmart, so I'll include those. My daughter is in Head Start 3 days a week but I need additional childcare for job search activities. Is that something CalWORKs would help with? And I definitely plan to send in the SAR 7 next week to be safe.
