Just a quick update since there seems to be some confusion - when your SAR 7 shows as "Received" in BenefitsCal, it means the system received your submission, but it doesn't necessarily mean a worker has reviewed it or that everything is complete. The county has until the end of the payment month to process your SAR 7. If you submitted it with several days before the due date, that's great! But definitely follow up with a call to make sure they don't need anything else from you. If you do call and they confirm everything looks good, ask them to make a note in your case file that you called to confirm. That way if there are any issues later, you have a record that you followed up.
I've been through this exact situation multiple times! One thing that really helped me was setting up text notifications in my BenefitsCal account if you haven't already. Go to your account settings and enable SMS alerts - they'll text you if there are any updates or if they need additional documents. Also, if you do end up calling and can't get through to your specific caseworker, ask to speak with the "worker of the day" - they can access your case and tell you the status of your SAR 7. Sometimes they can even see notes that aren't visible online about what documents they might still need. Don't stress too much though - you submitted it with time to spare and it shows as received. That's already better than a lot of people who wait until the last minute!
This is really helpful advice! I didn't even know about the text notifications - I'm going to set those up right now. And good to know about the "worker of the day" option, that could save me a lot of time trying to reach my specific caseworker. Thanks for the reassurance too, I'm definitely overthinking this but better safe than sorry with something this important.
I'm really glad you got through to your worker and are switching to direct deposit! I've been following this thread because I'm in a similar situation. Just wanted to share that I made the switch about 6 months ago after my neighbor got skimmed twice. The peace of mind is worth it - no more worrying every time I use my EBT card for cash. My bank also sends me instant notifications when any money gets deposited, so I know right away when my benefits come through. The only downside is it does take a couple days to process, but honestly that's a small price to pay for the security. Hope everything goes smoothly with your direct deposit setup!
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who's been using direct deposit for a while without issues. I'm definitely feeling more confident about making the switch now. The instant notifications sound super helpful - I'll make sure to set those up with my bank too. It's crazy that we even have to worry about this stuff but at least there's a safer option. Really appreciate everyone in this thread sharing their experiences and advice!
I'm so glad this thread exists! I've been putting off dealing with this EBT skimming issue but reading everyone's experiences has convinced me I need to act fast. My sister got her benefits stolen last month and she's still fighting to get the money back - it's been a nightmare for her family. I had no idea direct deposit was even an option for CalWORKs cash aid! My case worker never mentioned it when I asked about keeping my benefits safe. Does anyone know if there are any fees from the county for switching to direct deposit? And do all banks accept these direct deposits or are there restrictions? I bank with a credit union so I want to make sure before I start the paperwork. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories - it's scary but helpful to know what to expect!
Hey! I just went through this exact situation 6 months ago when my restaurant job went from full-time to on-call. You absolutely can and should apply for both programs right now! Don't wait for your first reduced paycheck - I made that mistake and it delayed everything by weeks. A few things that really helped me: 1. Get everything in writing from your employer about the schedule change - even a text or email helps 2. When you apply online through BenefitsCal, be super clear in the comments section that your income is about to drop significantly 3. Ask specifically about expedited CalFresh during your phone interview - with 2 kids you'll probably qualify and get food benefits within days One thing nobody mentioned - if you're having trouble reaching your worker later on, you can also walk into your county office. I know it's a pain but sometimes it's the only way to get someone to actually look at your case. Good luck mama, you got this! 💪
This is such great advice! I'm definitely going to apply this weekend and ask about expedited CalFresh specifically. The part about getting everything in writing from my employer is really smart - I was just going to mention it verbally but having documentation makes way more sense. Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helps to know someone else went through the same thing and it worked out!
I'm going through something similar right now! My hours got cut from 35/week to maybe 15-20 and it's been really stressful. One thing I learned is that you should definitely apply online through BenefitsCal.org first, but also try to schedule an in-person appointment at your county office if possible. The workers there can sometimes explain things better than trying to figure it out over the phone. Also, since you mentioned you're a single mom with 2 kids, make sure you ask about the Maximum Aid Payment (MAP) for your family size when you apply for CalWORKs. With variable income from on-call work, some months you might get more assistance and some months less, but they calculate it based on your household size and county. One more tip - start keeping a simple notebook or phone notes of every hour you work and every dollar you earn. It makes reporting so much easier later on. The county workers really appreciate when you come prepared with organized records!
UPDATE: Finally got through to my worker! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked - got through in about 30 minutes instead of being on hold forever. My worker is expediting my claim because I have my rent due notice. She said there's been a huge increase in EBT theft in Fresno lately. She's also referring me to the Housing Support Program for emergency assistance while my claim is processed. THANK YOU everyone for the advice! I'm still stressed but at least I know what to do now. Will update when I hear about my claim.
So glad you got through to your worker and are making progress! This is exactly why we need to share information in this community - your experience will help others who face the same situation. One more tip while you're waiting: document EVERYTHING with photos and timestamps. Take pictures of your rent due notice, screenshot all your communications with your worker, and keep a log of every phone call you make. If there are any delays or issues with your claim, this documentation will be crucial. Also, once you get your benefits restored, consider asking your worker about setting up direct deposit for future payments if it's available in your county. Some people have found it's safer than using the EBT card for cash benefits, though I know not all counties offer it yet. Hoping you get your money back quickly! Keep us posted on how the Housing Support Program works out too.
Great advice about documenting everything! I've been taking screenshots but didn't think about keeping a call log - that's really smart. Quick question for anyone who knows - does the direct deposit option for cash benefits actually exist in Fresno County? My worker didn't mention it when we talked but if it's available that would be so much safer than using the EBT card at ATMs. I'm definitely paranoid about using any ATM now after this whole ordeal! Also wanted to add - for anyone else dealing with this, make sure you ask your worker specifically about "expedited processing due to housing emergency." Those seem to be the magic words that actually get things moving faster.

I just wanted to add one more thing - make sure to document everything. Take screenshots of your submitted SAR7 in BenefitsCal, write down the dates/times you called, names of anyone you spoke with, etc. If there is a problem with your March benefits, having this documentation will help you if you need to file for a fair hearing to get retroactive benefits. CalWORKs is required to follow certain timelines for processing your paperwork, and if they fail to do so but you submitted on time, you have rights to appeal any benefit interruptions.

•Thank you! I've started keeping better records after this experience. I have screenshots of my BenefitsCal submission and I'm writing down every call attempt. I appreciate everyone's help and support here - it's made me feel less alone in dealing with this system.

I'm so sorry you're going through this stress! I had a similar situation a few months ago where my SAR7 got stuck in processing limbo. What really helped me was calling first thing in the morning right when the office opens (usually 8am) - that's when you're most likely to get through to someone. Also, if you have your confirmation number from when you submitted online, have that ready when you call because it helps them locate your case faster. The good news is that since you submitted before your deadline, your benefits should technically continue even if they haven't finished processing yet. Keep us posted on how it goes - we're all rooting for you!
