What time do CalFresh benefits load on EBT each month? Dates changing after recertification

I just went through recertification for CalFresh and got approved again last week (yay!). They loaded my benefits for last month right away, but I'm still waiting on this month's benefits to hit my EBT card. Before recertification, my benefits always posted on the 6th of the month, but it's already the 7th and nothing's there yet. Do benefit dates change after recertification? And does anyone know what TIME of day they usually load the card? Like midnight or morning or what? I've got groceries I need to buy tomorrow and can't afford to keep checking my balance all day. TIA!

CalFresh benefits are loaded onto EBT cards based on the last digit of your case number. Benefits post between the 1st and 10th of each month. The exact schedule is: • Case number ending in 1: 1st day of month • Case number ending in 2: 2nd day of month • Case number ending in 3: 3rd day of month And so on until the 10th. After recertification, your benefit date sometimes shifts because they might assign you a new case number. As for time of day, benefits typically load around 12:01 AM on your assigned day, but system delays can push it to around 6 AM.

Thank you!! My case number ends in 9 so that means I should get it tomorrow on the 9th? That makes sense. I was getting confused because before recertification I swear it was always the 6th. Really appreciate the info about the midnight loading too - I'll check first thing in the morning!

mine always loads at exactly 11:58pm the night BEFORE the date. so like if ur supposed to get it on the 9th check at midnight on the 8th going into the 9th. at least thats how its been for me the last 2 years

Same here! My benefits hit just before midnight the day before. Makes me wonder if the system runs on some different time zone lol. I always check around 11:45pm the night before my date and it's there like 95% of the time.

When you recertify they sometimes change your case number which affects your deposit date. This happened to me last year - I went from getting benefits on the 3rd to the 8th after recertification. It's really annoying when you're budgeting around a specific date! As for the time, in my experience they CLAIM it's midnight but it's usually more like 2-4am. I've literally stayed up until 3am before when I desperately needed to shop the next morning. The system is so inconsistent.

That's so frustrating! I wish they'd at least TELL you if your date is changing. I'm going to check both tonight at midnight and tomorrow morning. Really need to get groceries before the weekend.

When I had a similar issue after recertification, I spent HOURS trying to reach someone at the county office. If you're in a similar situation and need to speak with someone quickly, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I found their service through a friend who works in social services - they call the CalFresh office for you, wait through the hold time, and then call you when a real person picks up. Saved me literally 3+ hours of hold time. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Anyway, I learned that after recertification your deposit date is SUPPOSED to stay the same, but system updates sometimes cause temporary changes for 1-2 months before reverting back. Worth asking about if your date permanently changes.

Thanks for this tip! I might try this if my benefits don't show up by tomorrow. The hold times at my county office are ridiculous - last time I called I waited 1.5 hours and then got disconnected!

I HATE how they do this!! They never tell you anything important. Last year they completely changed my date from the 2nd to the 7th without telling me and I had NO FOOD for 5 extra days!!! The workers act like we're supposed to magically know this stuff. The LEAST they could do is put it in the approval letter but NOOOO that would be too helpful!!!!!

That happened to me too! I think the county workers don't even realize how the system works sometimes. My worker literally told me "benefits always come on the same day" but then mine changed after recertification. Sometimes I think they just say whatever to get you off the phone.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you just got recertified, your benefit amount might be different too. Make sure to check the recertification approval letter for your new benefit amount. My husband and I had our CalFresh benefits go from $315 to $425 after recertification because we reported higher rent costs. The date also changed from the 4th to the 9th. The system is weird.

Good point. I thought CalFresh and CalWORKs were loaded on the same day but they're actually completely different systems. My CalWORKs comes on the 1st but my CalFresh is on the 6th. Took me forever to figure that out lol

Just to clarify something important - your benefit date is determined by the last digit of your case number, not by when you apply or recertify. However, during recertification, some counties do issue new case numbers which changes your deposit date. You can find your case number on your approval notice. If your benefits don't arrive by your expected date (based on the last digit of your case number), you should call your county office. If it's an emergency food situation, ask specifically about emergency CalFresh replacement benefits - they can sometimes expedite this if you have no food.

Thank you for explaining this! I'll double check my case number on my approval letter tonight. If the last digit is still 9, I'll definitely be calling if nothing shows up by tomorrow evening. I appreciate everyone's help with this!

Just wanted to add my experience - I'm in LA County and after my recertification last month, my benefits actually started loading earlier than usual! I used to get them on the 8th but now they come on the 6th. The caseworker mentioned that they've been trying to consolidate some case numbers to reduce system load, which might explain why some people are seeing their dates change. Also, if you have the EBT Edge mobile app, you can set up notifications so you'll get a text when your benefits are loaded. Way better than constantly checking your balance! The app also shows your exact case number if you need to verify which day you should expect benefits.

Oh wow, I didn't know about the EBT Edge app notifications - that's a game changer! I've been manually checking my balance like every hour when I'm waiting for benefits to load. Definitely downloading that tonight. And it's interesting that LA County is consolidating case numbers - maybe that explains why mine might have changed too. Thanks for sharing this!

I went through something similar a few months ago! After recertification, my benefits were delayed by about 3 days from my usual date. What helped me was calling the EBT customer service line (1-877-328-9677) - they can tell you the exact status of your benefits and when they're scheduled to load, even if your caseworker isn't available. Also, if you're really in a bind for groceries, some food banks don't require you to wait for your CalFresh benefits and can help bridge the gap. I had to use one when my benefits were delayed and I had nothing left in my pantry. The 211 helpline (just dial 2-1-1) can connect you with local food resources if needed. Hope your benefits show up soon! The uncertainty is always stressful when you're counting on them for groceries.

This is really helpful advice! I didn't know the EBT customer service line could tell you the status - that's way better than waiting on hold for hours with the county office. And thanks for mentioning 211 for food banks. I'm hoping my benefits show up tomorrow but it's good to know there are backup options if they don't. The uncertainty really is the worst part when you're planning your grocery budget around a specific date.

I work at a county eligibility office and can shed some light on this! After recertification, your benefit date can definitely change if you get assigned a new case number. This happens more often than people realize - usually when there are system updates or when we need to correct errors in the original case setup. The good news is that once your new schedule is established, it should stay consistent going forward. Your benefits will load based on the last digit of your NEW case number, not your old one. So if your old case number ended in 6 (benefits on the 6th) but your new one ends in 9, you'll now get benefits on the 9th. As for timing, benefits typically start processing around 11:30 PM the night before your scheduled date and are usually available by 6 AM on your actual date. System maintenance can sometimes delay this until mid-morning, but it's rare. Pro tip: Your approval notice should show your case number - check the last digit to confirm your new benefit date! If you're still unsure, calling the EBT customer service line is faster than trying to reach your caseworker.
