Do CalFresh benefits deposit same date every month? Confusing EBT schedule

I started receiving CalFresh about 2 months ago and I'm confused about when the benefits actually go onto my EBT card. My first deposit came on the 8th, but last month it was loaded on the 7th. My neighbor says hers always comes on the 4th. Is there a specific schedule? Does it depend on your case number or something? I'm trying to budget for groceries and need to know if there's a set date I can count on each month. The paper they gave me just says 'monthly benefits' but doesn't specify dates.

yea its on a schedule based on ur case # last digit. mine ends in 3 so i get mine on the 3rd. last number 0 = 1st of month, 1 = 2nd of month etc. check ur benfitscal account or ur approval letter it shuold have ur case # on it

Thank you! My case number ends in a 7, so that explains why I got it on the 7th last month! But why did I get it on the 8th the first time? That's weird.

CalFresh benefits are issued on a staggered schedule throughout the first 10 days of each month. The day your benefits become available depends on the last digit of your case number: - Last digit 0: 1st of the month - Last digit 1: 2nd of the month - Last digit 2: 3rd of the month And so on up to: - Last digit 9: 10th of the month If your case number ends in 7, your regular deposit date should be the 8th of each month. This schedule never changes unless there's a major holiday or system issue.

But that's weird, cause last month it came on the 7th not the 8th. My case number definitely ends in 7 (just double-checked on BenefitsCal). Do they deposit early sometimes?

If your case number ends in 7, your benefits should normally be available on the 8th of each month. However, when the regular issuance date falls on a weekend or holiday, benefits are typically deposited early (the business day before). Maybe the 8th was a Sunday last month? That would explain why you got it on the 7th instead.

OMG you're right!! I just checked my calendar and the 8th was a Sunday last month! This is so helpful, thank you!!

My benefits never came on the same day for like 3 months when I first started. I called the county and they said something about 'initial issuance timing' being different from the regular schedule. After the first couple months it got consistent though. Bet that's what happened with your first deposit.

This is right. First month's issuance can be off-schedule. After that it follows the normal pattern based on your case number's last digit. Some people also get confused because the notification about deposit sometimes comes a day before or after the actual deposit.

Just want to add that if you ever NEED to know exactly when your benefits will deposit, but can't get through to the county lines, try Claimyr. I was in the same situation and couldn't reach anyone for days to confirm when my benefits would load (the EBT phone line just kept giving me automated info). Claimyr.com got me through to a real person in about 20 minutes who confirmed my exact deposit schedule. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. Totally worth it for peace of mind.

It did for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate because I needed to know if my benefits would load before a big grocery trip. Got connected to a worker who explained my whole issuance schedule and also told me about the early deposit for weekends/holidays, which I didn't know about before.

I hAD THIS SAME PROBLEM!!! And I was freaking out thinking they canceled my benefits or something when it came on a different day. The EBT customer service ppl are USELESS for this stuff. But yeah its based on ur case # like everyone is saying. Also, FYI you can check your balance and transaction history on the CalFresh EBT app which is way easier than calling that stupid number.

Thanks for the tip about the app! I didn't know there was one. Will download it right now.

Just to clarify on the timing: CalFresh benefits are available based on the last digit of your case number, and it's the day AFTER that number. So if your case ends in 7, benefits are available on the 8th day of the month. Case ends in 0, benefits on the 1st day, etc. If the day falls on a weekend or holiday, benefits are available the previous business day. The regular cycle never changes for your case, so once you know your pattern, you can rely on it for budgeting purposes. Many recipients mark these dates on their calendar since they remain the same month to month.

Except sometimes there are system issues and then all bets are off 🙄 Happened twice last year where benefits were delayed county-wide by like 2 days with zero warning

That's true, system-wide delays can happen, though they're rare. In those cases, counties usually put announcements on their websites and social media, but they're not great about communicating it directly to recipients.

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers! So to summarize what I learned: 1. My benefits should come on the 8th each month (since my case # ends in 7) 2. If the 8th falls on a weekend/holiday, they'll come early (the business day before) 3. The first month can be different from the regular schedule 4. I can use the EBT app to check my balance and deposits This is super helpful for budgeting! I was getting worried that the date would be random each month.

That's a perfect summary! Glad we could help clear things up for you.

Great thread! I'm also pretty new to CalFresh and had similar confusion about the deposit dates. One thing I wanted to add is that if you're ever unsure about your exact case number, you can find it on your EBT card itself - it's printed right on there along with your name. I didn't realize this for the longest time and kept digging through paperwork to find it. Also, I've noticed that sometimes the deposits happen really early in the morning (like 3-4 AM) so if you check your balance late at night and don't see anything, check again first thing in the morning on your deposit day. The money is usually there by the time you wake up!

Thanks for the tip about the case number being on the EBT card! I've been pulling out my paperwork every time I needed to reference it. And you're totally right about the early morning deposits - I've checked at like 11 PM and panicked when nothing was there, only to wake up and find it loaded. Good to know that's normal timing!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm in my third month of CalFresh and was also confused about the deposit schedule at first. My case number ends in 2, so I get mine on the 3rd of each month now (took me way too long to figure out the pattern lol). One thing I learned the hard way is that if you're planning a big grocery shopping trip, it's worth checking your balance the night before your deposit date just to make sure there weren't any delays or issues with your case. I once went to the store expecting my benefits to be there and they weren't because my recertification paperwork was late. Now I always double-check! The EBT app mentioned earlier is definitely a lifesaver for this.

That's such a good point about checking the night before! I'm still learning all these little tips. I didn't even think about recertification affecting the deposit timing - that would have totally caught me off guard too. Thanks for sharing that experience, definitely going to keep that in mind when my recertification comes up!

This thread has been so informative! I'm about to apply for CalFresh next week and had no idea there was a specific schedule for when benefits get deposited. I was expecting it to just be random or maybe the same date for everyone. It's really helpful to know that it's based on your case number - that seems like a fair way to spread out the deposits so the system doesn't get overloaded. I'm definitely going to save this thread for reference once I get approved. Quick question though - does anyone know if the deposit schedule is the same for emergency CalFresh benefits, or is that different? I might need to apply for emergency benefits while waiting for my regular application to process.
