i tried doing this with my pin but forgot what i changed it to 🤦♀️🤦♀️ had to go to the office in person to reset it and missed work so lost money anyway lol. maybe write it down somewhere safe if ur forgetful like me!!!
This is such valuable advice! I've been working with families affected by EBT theft in my volunteer role, and the PIN timing strategy you've shared is one of the most practical solutions I've heard. One additional tip I'd add: if you shop at the same stores regularly, try to vary your shopping locations and times after changing your PIN. Thieves sometimes target specific store locations where they've successfully installed skimmers. Also, for anyone who has been a victim of EBT theft - document EVERYTHING. Take photos of your transaction history, keep records of when you reported it, and save all correspondence with the county. While California isn't currently replacing stolen CalFresh benefits, there's ongoing litigation and policy pressure that might change this. Having documentation could be crucial if replacement policies change in the future. Stay strong everyone - this shouldn't be something we have to deal with, but sharing strategies like this helps protect our community! 💪
If you're really struggling with food while waiting, don't forget about food banks and pantries! Most don't require any paperwork or income verification - you just show up. Use findhelp.org or call 211 to find ones near you. Also, WIC might be faster to get approved if you qualify (they serve pregnant/breastfeeding women and kids under 5). Some churches and community centers also do free meal programs. I know it's not the same as having your own EBT card but it can help bridge the gap while you're waiting for CalFresh approval. Hang in there - it's frustrating but you'll get through this! 💪
This is such great advice! I hadn't thought about food banks being an option while waiting. I'll definitely look into findhelp.org and see what's available in my area. My kids are 8 and 12 so probably too old for WIC, but the food pantries sound really helpful. Thank you for thinking of practical solutions while we wait for the system to work!
I went through this exact same situation in Orange County last year! Applied online and was panicking about the wait time with two kids at home. Here's what helped me: 1. Call your county office first thing in the morning (like 8am sharp) - that's when you're most likely to get through without crazy hold times 2. Ask specifically about expedited processing - based on your rent vs income situation, you should definitely qualify for the 3-day approval 3. While you're waiting, seriously look into local food pantries. I was hesitant at first but they were a lifesaver. Many have fresh produce and even frozen items, not just canned goods 4. If you have any friends/family who can help with a grocery run, don't be too proud to ask. Most people understand how tough it is right now 5. Check your email AND your BenefitsCal account daily - sometimes they send requests for additional info through the portal and if you miss it, it delays everything You're doing the right thing by applying and advocating for your family. The system is slow but it works. Hang in there! 🙏
This is such a helpful thread! I'm in my third month of CalFresh and was also confused about the deposit schedule at first. My case number ends in 2, so I get mine on the 3rd of each month now (took me way too long to figure out the pattern lol). One thing I learned the hard way is that if you're planning a big grocery shopping trip, it's worth checking your balance the night before your deposit date just to make sure there weren't any delays or issues with your case. I once went to the store expecting my benefits to be there and they weren't because my recertification paperwork was late. Now I always double-check! The EBT app mentioned earlier is definitely a lifesaver for this.
That's such a good point about checking the night before! I'm still learning all these little tips. I didn't even think about recertification affecting the deposit timing - that would have totally caught me off guard too. Thanks for sharing that experience, definitely going to keep that in mind when my recertification comes up!
This thread has been so informative! I'm about to apply for CalFresh next week and had no idea there was a specific schedule for when benefits get deposited. I was expecting it to just be random or maybe the same date for everyone. It's really helpful to know that it's based on your case number - that seems like a fair way to spread out the deposits so the system doesn't get overloaded. I'm definitely going to save this thread for reference once I get approved. Quick question though - does anyone know if the deposit schedule is the same for emergency CalFresh benefits, or is that different? I might need to apply for emergency benefits while waiting for my regular application to process.
Welcome to CalFresh! Emergency benefits (EBT) usually get deposited within 1-3 business days if you qualify, and they don't follow the regular case number schedule since they're processed separately and much faster. The emergency benefits will tide you over while your regular application gets processed. Once your regular benefits kick in, then you'll follow the normal schedule based on your case number. Good luck with your application!
This is absolutely infuriating! I'm so sorry you and your kids are going through this. The fact that benefits can be stolen so easily and then families have to wait WEEKS for help is just broken. I went through something similar last year and here's what finally worked for me: I called my county supervisor's office (not CalFresh directly) and explained that my children had no food due to EBT theft. The supervisor's office put pressure on the county CalFresh office and I got a callback within 2 days instead of waiting weeks. Sometimes you have to go above the regular workers to get action. Also, while you're fighting this, see if your kids qualify for free school meals if they're not already getting them. At least that covers breakfast and lunch during school days. Some schools even have weekend backpack programs with food to take home. Keep pushing and don't let them brush you off. You shouldn't have to choose between feeding your kids and waiting for the bureaucracy to do its job!
This is such great advice about contacting the county supervisor's office! I never would have thought to go that route. I'm definitely going to try that if the EBT theft department doesn't follow through on their promise to restore May's benefits in 10 days. And yes, thankfully my kids do get free school meals, but with summer break coming up that won't help much longer. The weekend backpack program sounds amazing - I'll ask the school counselor about that. It's just so frustrating that families have to jump through all these hoops when WE are the victims of theft!
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this nightmare! As someone who works with families facing food insecurity, I wanted to add a few more resources that might help while you're waiting for your benefits to be restored: 1. Contact your local WIC office even if you don't normally qualify - they sometimes have emergency food vouchers for families with young children facing crisis situations like benefit theft. 2. Check if your area has a "Mobile Food Pantry" program - these are different from regular food pantries and often provide much larger quantities of fresh food. You can find locations at feedingamerica.org. 3. Many churches and community centers offer free community meals (not just food to take home) - this can help stretch whatever food you do have. 4. If your kids are under 5, look into local Head Start programs which often provide meals and snacks even during enrollment processes. The fact that this is happening to so many families is absolutely unacceptable. The state needs to fix these security vulnerabilities ASAP instead of making victims wait weeks for help. Keep advocating for yourself and your children - you're doing everything right in a completely broken system.

This whole discussion has been incredibly eye-opening! I've been on CalFresh for about a year now and honestly never fully understood how the freeze function worked. Like many others here, I was always hesitant to use it because I worried it might somehow interfere with my benefits or cause issues with the system. Reading through Paolo's original question and seeing everyone's real-world experiences has been so reassuring. The analogy about the frozen card being like a locked house where mail still gets delivered really clicked for me - it perfectly explains how the benefit deposit system works independently from the card's spending functionality. I'm definitely going to start using the freeze feature more proactively now, especially the tip about freezing between shopping trips to prevent card skimmers. It's amazing how a feature that seemed risky before now feels like an essential security tool. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and knowledge here!

•This thread has been such a game-changer for me too! I just got approved for CalFresh three weeks ago and have been absolutely terrified of touching anything in the app beyond checking my balance. Reading everyone's experiences here has made me realize I was overthinking everything. The house/mail analogy really made it click for me - it's such a simple way to understand how these systems work separately. I'm definitely going to start using the freeze feature now, especially since I work in retail and see how common card skimming has become. It's incredible how this one question from Paolo has created such a comprehensive guide for new CalFresh recipients. Thank you everyone for being so open about sharing your experiences!

As someone who just applied for CalFresh last week and is still waiting for approval, this entire thread has been incredibly educational! I had no idea there was even a freeze function on EBT cards, let alone how it works. Reading through everyone's experiences here has given me so much more confidence about managing my benefits once they start. The fact that so many people were initially worried about the same things I'm worried about is really comforting - it shows these concerns are totally normal for new recipients. I'm bookmarking this thread to reference later when I get my card. Thank you Paolo for asking the question and everyone else for sharing such detailed, helpful responses! This community seems amazing for getting real answers to practical questions.
