How to know which day CalFresh benefits get loaded onto EBT card?

Hi loves. Does anyone know how you know what day each month you get your benefits on? I just got approved for CalFresh last week and received my EBT card in the mail. The paperwork is super confusing and doesn't clearly state when exactly my benefits will be available. I've heard different things from people - some say it depends on your case number, others say it's the same day each month. I need to plan my grocery shopping and don't want to go to the store only to find there's nothing on my card yet! Would really appreciate some clarity on this!

CalFresh benefits are distributed between the 1st and 10th of each month based on the last digit of your case number. For example, if your case number ends in 7, you'd get your benefits on the 7th. You can find your case number on your approval letter or on your SAR7 form. Hope that helps!

Thank you! That makes sense. I just found my approval letter and my case number ends in 3, so I guess I should expect the benefits on the 3rd of each month?

It's total BS how they never explain this stuff clearly!! I was so confused when I first got approved too. Had to call like 5 times because I kept getting disconnected and then finally someone told me its based on the last number of your case #. I've had mine for 2 years now and its ALWAYS on the 9th for me. Hasn't changed once. Just don't expect them on weekends - if your day falls on weekend it usually shows up the Friday before.

Tru that. My day is the 4th and when it falls on a Sunday I get it on Friday the 2nd. Never Monday the 5th which woulda made more sense??? The system is just weird sometimes.

As others said, it's based on the last digit of your case #. But if you want to be 100% sure, you can call the EBT customer service line at 1-877-328-9677 and check your next deposit date. That number is on the back of your EBT card too. You can also check your balance and deposit date through the ConnectEBT app or BenefitsCal website once you create an account.

Thank you for this! I'll download the app right now. Didn't even know there was one!

I think I can explain it more clearly! The CalFresh benefit issuance schedule for 2025 is as follows: Last digit of case number = Day of month benefits are available 0 = 1st 1 = 2nd 2 = 3rd 3 = 4th 4 = 5th 5 = 6th 6 = 7th 7 = 8th 8 = 9th 9 = 10th As someone mentioned, if your date falls on a weekend or holiday, benefits are typically issued on the previous business day. The schedule is the same every month, so you'll always get them on the same day!

This is mostly right, but want to clarify one thing - if your date falls on a weekend or holiday, benefits are actually loaded the PREVIOUS business day, not the next one. So if you're supposed to get benefits on Saturday the 3rd, you'd actually get them on Friday the 2nd, not Monday the 5th.

i got my calfresh but then missed my recert interview and they stopped my benefits...had to reapply and ended up with a different case number now i get my benefits on the 8th instead of the 2nd like before just fyi if u ever reapply ur date might change

Good to know! I'll make sure to keep track of my recertification date. When do they usually send the notice for that?

Hey, if you're having trouble reaching your county CalFresh office about this or any other questions, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. Instead of waiting on hold for hours, they'll wait on hold for you and call you back when a real person answers. Really helped when I had issues with my benefits timing. Check out their demo video at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or their website claimyr.com. Not sure if you need it now since your question seems answered, but might be helpful for future reference!

That sounds really useful! The couple times I've called so far I got disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes. Bookmarking this for when I need to call them again - which will probably be soon knowing how confusing all this paperwork is!

Great advice! You can also sign up for text alerts about your benefits through the EBT cardholder portal or the ConnectEBT app. It will notify you when benefits are deposited and also warn you about upcoming expiration dates for your benefits.

One more thing to note - your first month's benefits might come on a different day than your regular schedule. Sometimes they load the initial benefits the day after your approval, regardless of your case number's last digit. After that first month, it will follow the regular schedule based on your case number.

OMG THIS!! My first payment came on like the 27th of the month which was super random but then switched to the 9th after that. Woulda been nice if someone had TOLD ME instead of me panicking thinking I got nothing!

Just wanted to add that if you're still within your first month after approval, don't panic if your benefits don't show up on your expected day! Like Lucas mentioned, the first month can be irregular. I got my first benefits about 5 days after approval, then it switched to my regular schedule (the 6th) the following month. Also, benefits are usually loaded early in the morning - like between 12 AM and 6 AM - so check your balance first thing when you wake up on your day. The ConnectEBT app that others mentioned is super helpful for tracking this stuff!

This is so helpful! I'm actually still in my first month (just got approved last week) so this explains why I haven't seen anything yet. I was starting to worry something went wrong with my application. Good to know about the early morning timing too - I'll make sure to check first thing when I wake up. Thanks for mentioning the ConnectEBT app again, I downloaded it earlier and it's already been super useful for understanding everything!

Just a heads up for anyone reading this - if you move counties while on CalFresh, your case number might change and therefore your benefit date could change too! I moved from LA County to San Diego County last year and had to transfer my case. My old case number ended in 4 so I got benefits on the 4th, but my new case number ends in 1 so now I get them on the 2nd. It was actually kind of nice getting them earlier in the month, but definitely caught me off guard the first time! Make sure to ask about this if you're planning to move.

That's really good to know about moving between counties! I'm actually thinking about relocating in a few months so this is super helpful information. Did you have to restart the whole application process when you moved or was it more like a transfer? And how long did it take for the new case number to get assigned? I'd hate to have a gap in benefits during the transition.
