When do CalFresh benefits deposit each month? First time EBT user confused

Just got approved for CalFresh last week (yay!!!) and received my EBT card in the mail yesterday. I've activated it but there's no money on it yet. The approval letter says I qualify for $375/month but doesn't say WHEN that money will actually show up on my card. Is there a specific day of the month they load benefits? Do they tell me somewhere I missed? I need to buy groceries this weekend and I'm not sure if I should wait or use what little cash I have left. Thanks for any help!

Congrats on your approval! Your CalFresh benefits are deposited on a specific day each month based on the last digit of your case number. Look at your approval notice for your case number (usually 9-10 digits). The deposit schedule is: - Case ending in 1: benefits available on the 1st - Case ending in 2: benefits on the 2nd - Case ending in 3: benefits on the 3rd And so on up to 0, which gets benefits on the 10th. If you can't find your case number, it should be on your EBT card or any notice you received from the county.

THANK YOU! I just checked my approval letter again and my case number ends in 7, so I should get it on the 7th. That's this weekend - perfect timing! You're a lifesaver.

The payment date is NOT on the back of the card. As the other poster correctly explained, it's based on the last digit of your case number. For example, my case number ends in 4, so I get mine on the 4th of every month. Been on CalFresh for 3 years now.

If you need your benefits right away and can't wait until your deposit date, you might want to call your caseworker. Sometimes they can do an emergency release of funds, especially for new applicants who haven't received their first payment yet. Just explaining that you're out of food might be enough for them to help speed things up.

Good luck getting through to a caseworker though! I spent TWO DAYS trying to reach someone last month when my benefits didn't load. Kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they hold your place in line and call you back when a real person answers. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

Thanks for the advice about emergency funds! I think I can make it until the 7th (my deposit date according to my case number), but good to know there's an option if things get desperate. And thanks for the Claimyr tip too - I'll keep that in mind if I ever need to call them!

Just FYI - the first month's benefits can sometimes be prorated depending on when in the month you applied. So if you applied mid-month, your first payment might be less than the full $375. The full amount will start the following month. Just so you're not surprised if the amount seems off!

Oh no, I didn't know that! I applied on April 22nd and got approved on April 30th. Does that mean I'll only get like a third of the benefits for my first payment? That would be rough.

Don't worry too much - since you applied late April and were approved quickly, you might actually get both May's benefits AND the prorated amount for the last few days of April in your first deposit. Check your approval letter - it should break down exactly what amounts you're getting and for which months.

Everyone's given good advice about the deposit schedule based on your case number. One additional tip: download the ConnectEBT app or register at www.connectebt.com - you can check your balance anytime and see when deposits happen. It's super helpful for tracking your benefits and purchases. Way easier than calling the number on the back of the card every time.

The ConnectEBT app is a lifesaver! I have mine set to alert me when my benefits deposit each month. Also helps me track my spending so I don't blow through my benefits too fast at the beginning of the month.

Just downloaded the app - thank you! This will make things so much easier to track. I had no idea this existed.

Thanks for the tip! I already made my grocery list with only eligible items. Focusing on meat, produce, bread, eggs, and staples to stretch the benefits as much as possible.

I was super stressed my first month on CalFresh too! One thing that confused me was that I got a letter saying I was approved for $237 but then actually received $422 on my card. Turns out they gave me benefits retroactive to when I applied. So don't be surprised if your amount is different from what your approval letter says - could be more if they're including benefits from your application date!

That would be amazing! I'm going to try not to get my hopes up, but that would really help me get caught up on groceries. I've been scraping by on ramen and peanut butter for weeks.

Also, make sure to submit your SAR7 form when they send it to you around the 5th month! So many people lose their benefits because they forget to return that form. It's a simple income report but if you don't send it back, they'll cut off your benefits and you'll have to reapply from scratch. Ask me how I know...😩

This is SUCH important advice. Set a reminder in your phone for 5 months from now. When you get the SAR7 in the mail, fill it out immediately and return it. Even if your income hasn't changed, you still need to report that. Recertification happens at 12 months, but the SAR7 at 6 months is just as important for keeping your benefits active.

Thank you both! Just added a reminder in my phone for September to watch for the SAR7 form. Really appreciate all the tips - I had no idea about any of this stuff.

Welcome to the CalFresh community! Sounds like you've gotten some really solid advice here. Just wanted to add that if you're ever unsure about whether something is EBT-eligible at the store, most items will show "EBT" on the receipt or shelf tag. Also, farmer's markets often accept EBT and some even have matching programs where they'll double your benefits for fresh produce - definitely worth looking into in your area. You've got this! The first month is always the most confusing but it gets much easier once you get into the routine.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the farmer's market tip! I had no idea they accepted EBT or that some places double your benefits for produce - that sounds amazing. I'll definitely look into what's available in my area. Everyone here has been incredibly helpful and it's making me feel so much more confident about navigating this whole system. Really grateful to have found this community!

Hey Keisha! Congrats on getting approved - that's awesome! Just wanted to add one more helpful tip that I wish someone had told me when I first started: if you shop at certain stores like Walmart or Target, you can actually check which items are EBT-eligible right in their apps before you go shopping. Just search for an item and it'll show an "EBT" label if it's covered. Super helpful for meal planning and avoiding any awkward moments at checkout! Also, don't feel bad about asking the cashier if you're ever unsure about an item - they deal with EBT transactions all day and are usually pretty helpful. Welcome to the community! πŸ™‚

Thanks Nina! That's such a great tip about checking EBT eligibility in the store apps - I never would have thought of that. I was worried about looking confused at checkout but knowing I can pre-check everything will make shopping so much smoother. Really appreciate the welcome and all the helpful advice from everyone here! This community has been amazing.

Hey Keisha! Congrats on getting approved for CalFresh! πŸŽ‰ I see you've gotten tons of great advice here about deposit dates and the ConnectEBT app. One thing I'd add is to keep all your CalFresh paperwork organized in one place - approval letters, case number info, any correspondence from your county office. You'll need to reference these documents pretty regularly, especially when it comes time for recertification. Also, if you're looking to stretch your benefits further, check if your area has any food banks or pantries that complement CalFresh - many people don't realize you can use both resources together. The combination can really help make your food budget work better. Good luck with everything, and don't hesitate to ask questions here - this community is super supportive!

Thanks Collins! That's really smart advice about keeping all the paperwork organized - I'm definitely going to set up a folder for all my CalFresh documents right now. And I hadn't thought about combining food banks with CalFresh benefits, but that makes total sense to stretch things further. I'll look into what's available in my area. Everyone here has been so welcoming and helpful - I'm really glad I found this community! It's making what seemed like a confusing process so much more manageable.

Hey Keisha! Welcome and congrats on your approval! πŸŽ‰ I see you've gotten amazing advice here already. Just wanted to add that you can also call the EBT customer service number on the back of your card (1-877-328-9677) to check your balance and transaction history once your benefits load. They have an automated system that's available 24/7, so you don't have to wait for business hours. Also, pro tip: benefits usually load overnight, so if your deposit date is the 7th, check your balance early morning on the 7th rather than staying up late on the 6th waiting for it! The system typically updates between 12-6 AM. You're going to do great - the first month feels overwhelming but it becomes second nature pretty quickly!
