When does CalFresh deposit benefits each month? Different times for regular vs. extra allotments?
Hey CalFresh folks! I'm new to the program (just got approved last month) and I'm trying to figure out when exactly benefits get deposited each month. My EBT card says I was approved for $375 monthly, but I'm confused about the timing. My caseworker mentioned something about regular benefits and possible supplemental allotments coming at different times? I need to budget carefully for my family and would really appreciate knowing when I can expect the funds. Does it always come on the same day? And if there are extra benefits sometimes, when do those typically hit the card? Thanks!

Regular CalFresh benefits are deposited on a staggered schedule based on the last digit of your case number. It falls between the 1st and 10th of each month. Check your approval letter - it should tell you your specific issuance date. The schedule never changes once assigned to you. As for 'extra stamps' - I'm assuming you mean emergency allotments or supplements? Those emergency allotments were a pandemic thing and ended in April 2023. There aren't regular 'extra' benefits anymore unless there's a specific adjustment to your case or a disaster declaration.

•Thank you! Just found my approval letter and looks like my date is the 9th of each month. I didn't realize it was based on my case number. My neighbor kept talking about getting 'extra' on a different day so I was confused.

•Yep, they ALWAYS load at midnight exactly on your assigned day. Set an alarm lol. I've literally stayed up til midnight just to check mine before. The system is super consistent with timing.

There's a lot of confusion about this! Here's a breakdown: 1. Regular CalFresh benefits: Issued between 1st-10th of each month based on the last digit of your case number: - Last digit 1: 1st day of month - Last digit 2: 2nd day - And so on... - Last digit 0: 10th day 2. Supplemental benefits: These can happen if: - You reported an income change mid-cycle and qualified for more - There was an error in your benefit calculation that gets corrected - You won an appeal or hearing - There's a disaster declaration for your county These supplements can come at any time during the month when processed. Check your BenefitsCal account for notices about any adjustments. The pandemic emergency allotments that gave everyone the maximum benefit for their household size ended in early 2023.

•So do the regular benefits load exactly midnight the night before or midnight of that actual day? Like if my date is the 8th, would it be midnight as the 7th turns to the 8th, or midnight as the 8th turns to the 9th?

•It's midnight as the day turns to your issuance date. So if your date is the 8th, benefits load at midnight as the 7th becomes the 8th. Basically the first minute of your assigned day.

THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE!!! I've been on CalFresh for 3 years and TWICE my benefits didn't load on my assigned day with NO EXPLANATION. Had to call and wait for HOURS only to be told it was a "system glitch" and I had to wait another 3 days!!! Don't count on the exact day if you're really desperate because the county WILL let you down when you need it most!!!

•That's unfortunate you had those experiences. System glitches can happen, but they're actually quite rare with the CalFresh issuance system. In my experience helping clients, the deposit schedule is one of the more reliable aspects of the program. It's good to prepare for possible delays, but for most recipients, benefits arrive consistently on their assigned day.

my benefits come on the 3rd but tbh i always check my balance starting like the 1st just in case lol. one time they came early and i almost missed it. btw if ur trying to check ur balance the ebt app is way better than calling that number

•Oh that makes sense! We did have those big storms in January. Maybe that's what my neighbor was talking about with the extra benefits.

If you ever need to check on your benefit status or have questions about deposits that seem delayed or incorrect, trying to reach the county office can be frustrating. I've had clients who spent days trying to get through on the CalFresh hotlines. One service that's been helpful for many is Claimyr (claimyr.com). They can connect you directly to a CalFresh representative without the usual wait times. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 It's particularly useful when you're dealing with time-sensitive benefit issues like deposits not showing up when expected.

•Thanks for this recommendation! The county office number is always so busy, I tried calling twice last week and gave up after being on hold forever. I'll check out that service if I have any issues with my deposits.

•Has anyone actually used this? Seems too good to be true tbh. The wait times are RIDICULOUS usually.

•I've used it twice when I had issues with my SAR7 and when my card was suddenly locked. Saved me hours of wait time both times.

One more thing to know - if you've just been approved and are waiting for your very first deposit, it might not follow the regular schedule. First-time benefits often come within 30 days of approval, regardless of what your regular issuance date will be going forward. So if you just got approved, you might get your first deposit sooner than your regular schedule would indicate.

•That's really helpful to know! I got approved on the 20th of last month, so maybe I'll see something before the 9th this first time. I'll keep checking my EBT card.

Does anyone know if there's a way to change your issuance date? The 10th is really inconvenient for me because my rent is due on the 1st, and I'd love to have my food benefits earlier in the month.

•Unfortunately, there's no way to request a different issuance date. The system assigns it based on your case number, and it can't be changed unless your entire case is closed and you reapply (which would give you a new case number and potentially a different date). Most financial counselors suggest budgeting one month ahead if possible - using this month's benefits to buy food for next month. I know that's not always practical though.

Just wanted to add that you can also check your balance and transaction history through the ebtEDGE mobile app or by calling the customer service number on the back of your EBT card. The app is super convenient and shows you exactly when your benefits were loaded. Since you're new to the program, I'd recommend downloading it and setting up your account - it's way easier than calling the automated phone line every time you want to check your balance. Also, keep all your paperwork from your approval because it has important dates and case information you might need later!

•Thanks for mentioning the ebtEDGE app! I'm still figuring out all the tools available. Just downloaded it and was able to set up my account using my EBT card number. You're right - it's much easier than calling that automated line. I can already see my approval amount on there. Really appreciate everyone's help in this thread - as someone new to CalFresh, all these tips about timing, apps, and what to expect are incredibly helpful!

Welcome to CalFresh! Just to add to all the great info here - since you mentioned you're new to the program, make sure you understand your reporting requirements too. You'll need to submit a SAR 7 (Semi-Annual Report) every 6 months to stay active, and report certain changes within 10 days (like income increases over the limit or moving). Missing these deadlines can cause your benefits to stop, which would mess up that reliable deposit schedule everyone's talking about. Your caseworker should have given you a packet explaining all this, but it's easy to overlook when you're just focused on getting approved. The BenefitsCal website also has reminders and lets you submit reports online, which is way easier than mailing them in!

•This is such important advice! I actually almost missed this in all my paperwork. My caseworker did mention the SAR 7 but I was so focused on just getting approved that I didn't really pay attention to the timeline. Just checked my BenefitsCal account and I can see when my first report is due. Thanks for the reminder about the 10-day reporting rule too - I had no idea some changes needed to be reported that quickly. It's really helpful to know I can do the reports online instead of dealing with the mail. This community has been amazing for learning all these details they don't always explain clearly during the application process!
