What exactly is CalSAWS and how does it affect my CalFresh benefits?
I've been on CalFresh for about 2 years now but just got a letter saying something about my case being switched to 'CalSAWS'. The county worker mentioned it briefly during my last recertification phone call but I was dealing with my kids and didn't catch the full explanation. Is this a new system that's replacing the old one? Will this change how I report my income on my SAR7? My next semi-annual report is due in June and I'm worried this system change might mess up my benefits or make the process more complicated. Anyone know what CalSAWS actually is and if I need to do anything different now?

CalSAWS stands for California Statewide Automated Welfare System. It's basically a new computer system that all counties in California are now using to manage CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, and other benefit programs. Your benefits and eligibility requirements aren't changing - just the computer system the county workers use to process everything. You'll still submit your SAR7 the same way, and your EBT card will continue working normally. The biggest difference you might notice is the BenefitsCal website looks different if you use that to check your benefits or submit reports online. Some counties are still transitioning, which is probably why you got that letter.

My county switched to CalSAWS last year and it was a NIGHTMARE!!!! They lost all my verification documents and I had to resubmit everything. Then they said they never got my SAR7 even tho I have proof I submitted it. Got a discontinuance notice and had to fight to get my benefits back. Make sure u keep COPIES OF EVERYTHING and take screenshots if u do anything online!!!!

I found this really helpful service called Claimyr when my county switched to CalSAWS and I needed to speak with someone. It helped me skip the phone queue and got me connected to a real person at the CalFresh office in about 10 minutes. I was so tired of being on hold for hours only to get disconnected. To give you some more context: CalSAWS is the final phase of California's effort to create one unified system for all 58 counties. Before this, counties were using three different systems (C-IV, LEADER, or CalWIN). This consolidation should eventually make things more consistent across counties, which is especially helpful if you ever move to a different county. For your June SAR7, the form might look slightly different, but the information required is exactly the same. You can still submit it in person, by mail, fax, or online through BenefitsCal. The main things to report accurately are: 1. All household income from all sources 2. Any changes in household members 3. Any property purchased/received worth over $1,000 4. Address changes If your income has gone up significantly, make sure to check if it's now over the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) listed on your last Notice of Action letter. For 2025, a family of 3 has an IRT around $3,550 monthly (varies by household size).

They did mention that the format of the Semi-Annual Report might look a little different but will ask for the same information.
