Do I need to report reduced hours at my retail job to CalFresh? Working only every two weeks now
Hey everyone, I've been on CalFresh for about a year and my retail job just cut my hours dramatically. Instead of working every week, they're only scheduling me once every two weeks now. I'm honestly stressing about whether I need to report this change to CalFresh or not. I know we're supposed to report new jobs and income increases, but what about when your hours get reduced? Will they increase my benefits if I tell them I'm making less now? Or am I just creating unnecessary paperwork for myself? My next SAR7 isn't due for a couple months, so wondering if I should wait or report this now. Thanks for any advice!

Yes, you should definitely report this change! When your income decreases significantly like this, you could be eligible for an increase in benefits. In California, you're required to report changes that impact your eligibility or benefit amount. The good news is that decreased income doesn't need to be reported until your next SAR7 UNLESS you want your benefits recalculated sooner (which most people do). If you want the increase now rather than waiting months, contact your county office and let them know about your reduced hours. They'll likely increase your benefits starting the following month after you report.

•Thank you so much! I didn't realize I could get an increase. I'll definitely call them tomorrow. My rent takes almost all my income now with these reduced hours.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm pretty broke right now though so if there's a chance of getting more benefits sooner, I think I'll try reporting it now rather than waiting for my SAR7.

There's a specific rule about this! According to CalFresh regulations, you're actually required to report income changes on your SAR7 (Semi-Annual Report), but you can voluntarily report decreases in income at any time to potentially get increased benefits sooner. If your monthly income has decreased by a significant amount, it's definitely in your interest to report it now rather than waiting. For retail workers with variable schedules like yours, you should provide your last few pay stubs showing the reduced hours, and your county worker can recalculate your benefits based on your current circumstances. They typically use an average of your recent income to determine benefits when hours fluctuate. One important note: when you report the decrease, make sure to explicitly ask for them to recalculate your benefits based on this change. Sometimes they'll note the change but won't automatically adjust your benefits unless you specifically request it.

•This is super helpful information, thank you! I didn't know I needed to specifically ask them to recalculate. I'll bring my last 3 pay stubs showing the drop in hours when I call them.

Just be prepared for the hold times when you try to call the county. I waited 3+ hours last month trying to report a change and got disconnected twice. So frustrating. Have you tried using the BenefitsCal website to report the change instead? Sometimes that's faster than calling.

•I tried using BenefitsCal for a similar situation and the system wouldn't let me upload my paystubs properly. Ended up having to call anyway. The phone system is the WORST.

•If you're having trouble reaching someone at CalFresh, you might want to try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with reduced hours and needed to report it ASAP, but couldn't get through on the regular line. A friend recommended their service at claimyr.com - they basically call and wait on hold for you, then connect you once they reach a real person. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Totally worth it when you need to get through quickly.

BE CAREFUL about reporting income changes!!!!! I reported when my hours increased last year and they DECREASED my benefits right away, but when I reported hours decreasing they made me wait until my next SAR7 for an increase. The system always works AGAINST us never FOR us! 😡😡😡

•That's actually not how it's supposed to work, but unfortunately some county workers don't follow the rules correctly. Regulations specifically state that voluntary reports of decreased income should result in increased benefits for the following month if it affects your benefit calculation. If they tell you to wait for your SAR7, ask to speak with a supervisor and cite the CalFresh Manual of Policies and Procedures (MPP) Section 63-509(a)(1).

•Yeah well good luck getting a supervisor on the phone! They just transfer you to voicemail that nobody ever checks. The whole system is designed to frustrate people until they give up.

Update: I called the CalFresh office this morning after gathering my last few paystubs. Was on hold for almost an hour but finally got through to a worker. They were actually really helpful and said my benefits will increase starting next month! They're recalculating based on my current reduced hours. Thanks everyone for the advice - definitely worth reporting the change rather than waiting for my SAR7!

•That's great news! Just make sure to keep track of your hours going forward. If they increase your hours again before your next SAR7, you'll need to report that change if it puts you over the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) listed on your last approval notice. But as long as you stay under that amount, you don't have to report increases until your next SAR7.

•Good point about the IRT! I'll check my approval notice when I get home to see what that number is. Hopefully I stay under it, but I'll keep an eye on it if they start giving me more hours again.

what did they say about back benefits? do u get extra for the time u already worked less hours?

•They said benefits can only increase going forward from when I reported the change, not retroactively. Wish I'd known to report it right when my hours first got cut!
