Can I just let my CalWORKs close if husband's overtime exceeds IRT or must I complete SAR7?
My husband just got put on the holiday schedule at his warehouse job and he's going to be working tons of overtime starting next week. We're definitely going to go over our Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) because of this. I'm only getting CalFresh benefits right now (no Cash Aid). My SAR7 is due next month but I'm wondering if I can just let my case close naturally when our income increases or if I still need to fill out and submit the recertification paperwork? I don't want to get in trouble for not reporting properly but also don't see the point in doing all that paperwork if I won't qualify anyway. Anyone know the right way to handle this?

You definitely still need to report the income change even if you know it'll make you ineligible. If your husband's income will exceed your IRT, you're required to report that within 10 days of when it happens - that's separate from your SAR7 responsibility. If you don't report and just let benefits continue, they could consider it an overpayment and you might have to pay back benefits you weren't eligible for. Better to report properly and have a clean closure than deal with overpayment issues later.

•Thanks for the advice. So I need to report within 10 days of his first big paycheck? My IRT is $2,840 and with all the overtime he could get close to $3,200. Do I need to use a specific form or just call my worker?

u can just call ur worker and tell them ur going over irt, they'll close ur case. its not a big deal really lots of people have seasonal income changes. but def dont just ignore it cuz they WILL find out eventually and then ull have to deal with the overpayment mess and thats way worse

•Yeah I had a friend who didn't report a job and they hit her with like a $1200 overpayment bill 6 months later! The county has ways to track income srsly

I was in this exact situation last year when my wife got extra hours during holiday season! I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to our caseworker to report the income change. Kept getting stuck in those automated phone systems and nobody would call back. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live caseworker in less than 10 minutes! They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE showing how it works. Made it super easy to properly report the income change and I didn't have to worry about getting hit with an overpayment later.

•Wait, is this a real thing? I've been trying to reach my worker for WEEKS. How does that even work? Is it actually worth it? My county office never picks up the phone.

To clarify what others have said: 1. For CalFresh, you must report when your income exceeds the IRT within 10 days of when it happens 2. You can report by calling, but I recommend either uploading a Mid-Period Report form through BenefitsCal or submitting it in person so you have proof 3. You should still submit your SAR7 on time even if you expect your case to close 4. Temporary income increases (like holiday overtime) sometimes don't make you permanently ineligible - if your income will go back down after the holidays, note that on your report Proper reporting protects you from potential overpayment claims that could affect your credit or future eligibility. Always better to over-report than under-report.

•Thank you for laying this out so clearly. I didn't know about the Mid-Period Report form - that sounds better than just calling. My husband's overtime will definitely end after January, so maybe we'll still qualify after the holidays? Should I mention that his income will go back down when I report the increase?

Absolutely mention that the increase is temporary! That's super important. The county can sometimes do what's called "income averaging" where they take the annual expected income instead of just the monthly amount. So if it's just 2-3 months of higher income but then back to normal, they might keep you eligible throughout. Make sure to note exactly when you expect the overtime to end.

I'm so confused by all this reporting stuff. I thought we only had to do the SAR7 every 6 months and that was it? Why would we need to report in between? The system makes NO sense. My worker told me one thing, this thread says another thing. I'm scared I've been doing it wrong this whole time!!!!

•The SAR7 is your regular 6-month report, but you also have a separate requirement to report if your income goes above your IRT (Income Reporting Threshold) at any time. Your IRT amount is listed on notices you receive. This is a specific rule many people don't realize exists! CalWORKs (Cash Aid) and CalFresh have slightly different reporting requirements, which adds to the confusion.

When my husband got that construction job last summer our benefits just automatically stopped the month after his big check. I didn't report anything. Nobody ever said anything about overpayment. Maybe they just figured it out through the system? But maybe I just got lucky idk

•You probably did get lucky. The county has data matching with EDD (unemployment) so they can sometimes catch income changes automatically through wage reporting. But relying on that is risky - if the system misses it and catches it months later, you could end up with a large overpayment claim.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I'm going to fill out a Mid-Period Report form explaining that my husband's income will exceed our IRT but only temporarily due to holiday overtime. I'll make sure to still submit our SAR7 next month too. Better safe than sorry! Really appreciate all the guidance - the CalFresh rules can be so confusing sometimes.
