Mystery $20 cash benefit appeared once on my EBT then disappeared - what CalFresh program was this?
I got this strange letter a few months ago saying I'd be getting $20 cash monthly on my EBT card. The weird thing is I don't have CalWORKs or any other cash aid case active - just regular CalFresh food benefits. I received the $20 exactly once (February I think?) and then nothing after that. The money showed up in the cash side of my EBT card, not the food benefits side. The notice was really vague and I can't find it now. Has anyone else gotten random cash benefits added to their EBT this year? Is this some kind of new 2025 supplement program I'm missing out on? I've tried calling the county but got stuck in the automated system forever.

•This sounds like the CalFresh Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) that some households received at the beginning of the year. It was a one-time benefit for certain CalFresh recipients who met specific criteria - not an ongoing monthly payment. The notices weren't very clear about it being a one-time thing, which has confused many people. If you received other cash assistance previously and transitioned off, you might have qualified for this transitional payment.

I think I know what you're talking about! Was it called a "transitional benefit" or something? My cousin mentioned getting something similar but I'm not sure if it's the same program. Did the letter mention anything about compensation for previous benefit reductions?

•I really wish I kept that letter! It might have said something about transitional benefits but I'm not 100% sure. It definitely didn't explain it was a one-time thing though, because I've been expecting it every month since. Do you know if your cousin only got it once too?

Most likely what you received was a Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) payment. It's NOT a regular monthly benefit - it was designed as a one-time supplemental payment for certain CalFresh households who met specific criteria related to previous benefit adjustments. The communication about this was terrible though - many people thought it would continue monthly. The $20 cash balance can be used for anything (unlike regular CalFresh which is food-only). If you want to confirm whether this is what you received, you should ask specifically about TNB when you contact your county office.

After trying to call the CalFresh office for two days and getting disconnected multiple times, I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It connects you directly to a live worker instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The worker confirmed it was a Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) that was a one-time payment for households affected by certain benefit changes. Some people got it multiple months depending on their situation, but most only received it once. The notices were definitely confusing because they made it sound ongoing.

•Thanks for the info! That explains why I only got it once. I'll check out that Claimyr thing next time I need to call them - I spent almost 2 hours on hold yesterday before giving up. Did they say if there will be any more of these transitional benefits coming in the future?

THE SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!!! They never explain ANYTHING clearly and then expect us to understand all their weird program rules and random payments appearing and disappearing! I got something similar last year but it was $35 not $20 and I think it had something to do with pandemic emergency allotments ending?? EVERY COUNTY TELLS YOU SOMETHING DIFFERENT TOO!!!!

•You're right about the inconsistent communication. The $35 payment you received last year was likely the CalFresh Supplemental Payment Program which was different from this year's Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB). That earlier program was related to the end of emergency allotments, while this newer one is addressing other benefit adjustments. But you're absolutely right that they do a poor job explaining these special payments.

wait so is this different from the regular calfresh food stamps? i get the food money every month but this cash thing was separate on my ebt card

Aidan Percy
•Yes, completely different. Your regular CalFresh benefits are for food only and come monthly based on your household size, income, and expenses. The $20 cash benefit was a special Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) that was loaded to the cash side of your EBT card as a one-time adjustment. The cash side can be used for anything, not just food. They're administered through the same system, but they're different programs with different rules.

This whole situation reminds me of when they suddenly sent me that P-EBT card during COVID without any clear explanation. I didn't even know what it was for weeks and almost threw it away thinking it was junk mail! They really need to improve how they communicate about these special benefits. Is there a website where they post announcements about these kinds of temporary programs?

•You can check the CDSS (California Department of Social Services) website for official announcements about special programs and benefits. The P-EBT communication was particularly problematic because cards were mailed without adequate explanation. For this recent TNB benefit, they sent notices, but they weren't clear about it being a one-time payment in most cases. The official California CDSS website should have a section for program notices and changes: https://www.cdss.ca.gov/calfresh

Thanks everyone for the helpful information! Now I understand it was a one-time Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) payment. I wish they had made that clearer in the notice - I kept checking my EBT balance every month expecting another $20. At least now I know not to expect it anymore. For anyone else confused by CalFresh communications, it sounds like the clearest way to get answers is to ask specifically about the program by name (like "TNB" in this case) when you call the county office.

I'm glad this thread cleared things up! I was in the same boat - got that mysterious $20 in February and kept wondering where the rest went. The lack of clear communication from the county is so frustrating. It's crazy that we have to piece together information from each other instead of getting straightforward explanations from the agencies themselves. Has anyone figured out what the specific criteria were for getting the TNB? I'm curious if there's a pattern to who received it and who didn't.

•I'm new here but dealing with the same confusion! From what I've gathered reading through this thread, it seems like the TNB was targeted at households who had previous benefit adjustments or transitions - maybe people who had their CalFresh amounts changed due to policy updates or who transitioned off other programs like CalWORKs. The timing and criteria seem really inconsistent though, which explains why some people got multiple payments while others only got one. It's so typical that we have to become detectives just to understand our own benefits!

This is exactly what happened to me too! Got the $20 in February and kept waiting for it to show up again. It's so frustrating how they send these vague notices without explaining it's a one-time thing. I actually called three different times and got three different explanations from county workers - one said it was an "adjustment payment," another called it a "supplement benefit," and the third one had never heard of it at all. The inconsistency is maddening! At least now I know it was the TNB and I can stop checking my balance every month expecting it to appear again.

•This is so relatable! I'm pretty new to navigating CalFresh benefits and this whole thread has been incredibly helpful. It's mind-blowing that you got three completely different answers from county workers about the same benefit - that really shows how poorly trained they are on these special programs. I'm definitely bookmarking that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier because trying to get through to a knowledgeable person seems nearly impossible through regular channels. Thanks for sharing your experience - it makes me feel less alone in trying to decode all these confusing benefit communications!

This whole thread has been a lifesaver! I had the exact same experience - got that mysterious $20 in February and spent months wondering if my case was broken or something. The notice I received was so confusing that I actually thought it might be a scam at first. What really bothers me is that this seems to happen with every special benefit program - remember how confusing the pandemic food benefit increases were? And don't even get me started on how they handled the end of emergency allotments. It's like they deliberately make these communications as vague as possible. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service next time I need to call. Has anyone had success using it for other CalFresh questions, or does it only work well for certain types of issues?

•I'm completely new to this community but wow, this thread is exactly what I needed! I got that same mysterious $20 in February and have been so confused about it. Reading everyone's experiences makes me realize how widespread this communication problem is with CalFresh. I haven't tried Claimyr yet but I'm definitely going to give it a shot after seeing @Norman Fraser mention it worked for getting through to someone who actually knew about the TNB program. The regular phone system is absolutely brutal - I gave up after being on hold for over an hour last week trying to ask about this exact issue. It s'frustrating that we have to rely on third-party services just to talk to someone who understands the programs we re'enrolled in!

This thread has been so helpful! I'm relatively new to CalFresh and got that same $20 cash benefit in February. Like everyone else, I kept expecting it to show up again each month and was getting worried something was wrong with my case. The communication around these special programs is honestly terrible - they send these official-looking notices that are so vague you can't tell if it's a one-time thing or ongoing. I actually kept the letter this time (learned my lesson from previous confusing notices) and it definitely doesn't clearly state it was a one-time Transitional Nutrition Benefit. It's crazy that we have to come to community forums to figure out what our own benefits mean! At least now I know to stop checking my EBT balance expecting that $20 to magically reappear. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's reassuring to know I wasn't the only one confused by this whole situation.

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I just joined this community because I had the exact same experience and was starting to think I was losing my mind. Got that $20 in February, kept the notice too (which is totally unclear about it being one-time), and have been checking my balance religiously every month since then. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to crowdsource information about our own government benefits because the official communications are so poorly written. I'm a newcomer to CalFresh and this whole experience has been such an eye-opener about how confusing the system can be. Thank you @Olivia Evans and everyone else for sharing - knowing that this was a widespread issue with the TNB program makes me feel so much better!

The notice I received was incredibly vague - it mentioned something about a "supplemental benefit" but gave no indication it was a one-time payment. It's so frustrating that we have to piece together information from community forums just to understand our own benefits! Thank you everyone for explaining that this was the Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) program. The lack of clear communication from CalFresh about these special programs is honestly mind-boggling.

•Welcome to the community! Your experience sounds exactly like what so many of us went through - it's honestly shocking how poorly they communicated this TNB program. I'm also relatively new here and this thread has been a game-changer for understanding what actually happened with that mysterious $20. It's really telling that you got two different explanations from county workers about the same benefit - it shows how undertrained they are on these special programs. I've been learning that keeping detailed records of these notices is super important because the official communications are often so unclear we need to compare experiences with other recipients to figure out what's actually going on. Thanks for sharing your story - it helps knowing we're all dealing with the same confusing system!

I'm brand new to this community and CalFresh in general, but this thread has been incredibly helpful! I also received that mysterious $20 cash benefit in February and had no idea what it was. The notice I got was so confusing - it used a lot of bureaucratic language but didn't clearly explain it was a one-time payment from the Transitional Nutrition Benefit program. I've been checking my EBT card every month since then wondering why it never came back. It's really frustrating as a newcomer to the system that these communications are so unclear. I actually thought maybe I had done something wrong or my case was messed up somehow. Reading everyone's experiences here makes me realize this was a widespread communication failure, not just my confusion as a new recipient. Thanks to everyone who figured out this was the TNB program - now I can stop obsessively checking my balance expecting that $20 to reappear! It's eye-opening how much we have to rely on community knowledge to understand our own benefits.

•Welcome to the community! Your experience is so similar to mine - I'm also pretty new to CalFresh and that February $20 completely threw me off. I kept thinking I must have missed something important in the paperwork or made some mistake with my case. It's honestly a relief to see how many people went through the exact same confusion with this TNB program. What really gets me is how they use all this official government language in the notices but somehow manage to leave out the most important detail - that it was a ONE-TIME payment! I've been learning that connecting with other recipients like everyone in this thread is often more helpful than trying to get clear answers from the official channels. The shared experiences here have taught me more about CalFresh than any government website or county worker explanation I've gotten so far.

I'm completely new to both this community and CalFresh, but this thread has been a lifesaver! I got that exact same mysterious $20 cash benefit in February and have been so confused about it ever since. Like everyone else here, I kept expecting it to show up again each month and was starting to think something was wrong with my application or that I had misunderstood something major about how the program works. The notice they sent was so vague and full of government jargon - it mentioned something about a "benefit adjustment" but gave absolutely no indication it was a one-time payment. As someone brand new to navigating government assistance, I had no idea what criteria I even met to receive it or why it suddenly stopped. I actually spent hours on their website trying to find information about ongoing cash supplements, thinking I was missing out on a regular benefit I was entitled to. Thank you so much to everyone who figured out this was the Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) program! Now I can finally stop obsessively checking my EBT balance every month waiting for that $20 to magically reappear. It's honestly pretty shocking that newcomers like me have to rely on community forums to decode what our own government benefits mean. The communication around these special programs really needs major improvement!

•Welcome to the community! Your experience really resonates with me as someone who's also fairly new to CalFresh. That $20 TNB payment was such a confusing introduction to how poorly these special programs are communicated! I totally get the feeling of thinking you did something wrong or missed some important detail - I went through the exact same spiral of checking websites and re-reading old paperwork trying to figure out what I was "supposed" to be getting. What strikes me most about this whole thread is how we've all had to become amateur investigators just to understand our own benefits. It's honestly ridiculous that as newcomers to the system, we're left to piece together information from each other instead of getting clear, straightforward explanations from the agencies themselves. The fact that so many of us had identical experiences with this TNB confusion really shows how systemic this communication problem is. At least we've got this community to help decode the bureaucratic mysteries!

•That's interesting that you got it in September and October! Based on what everyone else has shared in this thread, most people only received the Transitional Nutrition Benefit (TNB) once in February. Getting it twice in different months suggests there might be multiple rounds of these payments or different criteria that qualify people for additional amounts. Don't worry about owing the money back - these are legitimate benefit payments, not mistakes. The TNB program was designed to provide supplemental cash assistance to eligible CalFresh households. If you received it, it means you met whatever criteria they used for distribution. The timing seems inconsistent across different recipients, but that's likely due to how they processed different groups of eligible households rather than errors on their part.

I'm new to this community and CalFresh, and I'm so relieved to find this thread! I also got that mysterious $20 cash benefit back in February and have been completely baffled by it ever since. Like so many others here, I kept checking my EBT balance every month expecting it to show up again and was starting to worry that my case was somehow broken or that I had missed something important in my application. The notice they sent was incredibly confusing - it used all this official government language but somehow failed to mention the most crucial detail: that it was a ONE-TIME payment! As a newcomer to the system, I had no idea what the Transitional Nutrition Benefit even was or what criteria I met to receive it. I actually called my county office twice about it and got completely different explanations each time, which just added to my confusion. This thread has been such an eye-opener about how poorly these special programs are communicated. It's honestly mind-blowing that we have to come to community forums to decode what our own government benefits mean! I'm brand new to this community and just started receiving CalFresh benefits a few months ago. This thread has been absolutely incredible - I had the exact same experience with that mysterious $20 showing up in February! As a complete newcomer to the system, I was so confused and thought maybe I had accidentally qualified for some ongoing cash assistance program I didn't know about. The notice was so poorly written that I actually googled "CalFresh cash benefits" for hours trying to figure out what I was supposed to be getting regularly. When it didn't show up in March, I was convinced I had somehow messed up my case or missed a required form. It's honestly shocking that they can send out these official government notices without clearly stating it's a ONE-TIME payment from the Transitional Nutrition Benefit program. Thank you so much to everyone who solved this mystery! This community has been more helpful than any official resource I've found. It's pretty sad that newcomers like me have to crowdsource information just to understand our own benefits, but I'm grateful to have found such a knowledgeable group of people willing to share their experiences.

It's honestly ridiculous that as newcomers, we have to become detectives just to understand basic information about payments we receive. What really gets me is how that notice managed to sound so official and important while somehow completely failing to explain the most basic facts - like that it was a one-time thing! I spent weeks thinking I had stumbled into some additional cash assistance program and was worried I'd somehow lose it if I didn't understand the requirements. •Welcome to the community! Your experience perfectly captures what so many of us newcomers went through with that TNB payment - it's honestly both comforting and frustrating to see how universal this confusion was. I'm also fairly new to CalFresh and that February $20 had me doing the exact same obsessive balance checking, convinced I was missing out on some ongoing benefit I didn't understand. What really strikes me about reading through this entire thread is how we've all become amateur investigators of our own benefits! It's absurd that the official notice could be so formal and official-looking while completely failing to communicate basic information like "this is a one-time payment." As newcomers, we're already trying to learn all the regular program rules, and then they throw these mystery payments at us with zero context. Thank you for sharing your experience - it really helps knowing that even the newest recipients dealt with this same bureaucratic communication nightmare!
