Confused about CalFresh emergency allotment vs unexpected cash deposit - what's happening?
I'm kinda confused about something that happened with my benefits this month. I know the emergency allotments ended a while back, but I got an extra deposit on my EBT card yesterday. The weird part is, it wasn't just added to my food benefits balance - there was also a separate cash deposit of $274 that I wasn't expecting at all! I've had CalFresh for about 2 years but never received cash before. Is this some kind of new emergency program they started? Or maybe they made a mistake and I'll have to pay it back later? I don't want to spend it and then get in trouble for an overpayment. Has anyone else gotten unexpected cash alongside their regular CalFresh recently?

That's actually probably not related to CalFresh at all. It sounds like you might have been approved for CalWORKs (cash aid) without realizing it. Did you recently do your annual recertification or submit any new applications? Sometimes when you apply for one benefit, they automatically evaluate you for others if you qualify. I'd definitely call your county to confirm before spending it so you don't get hit with an overpayment notice later.

•Oh wow, really? I did do my recertification about 6 weeks ago but I don't remember applying for CalWORKs specifically. The worker did ask me a bunch of extra questions during the interview but I thought that was just normal. I have my 4yr old on the case too. Would they just automatically give me cash aid without telling me first??

this happened to me last year! turned out i got approved for calfresh AND calworks even tho i thought i was just applying for food stamps. the cash part is calworks not calfresh. they're different programs on the same ebt card. if u have kids or are pregnant u might qualify for both

•I do have my daughter on my case, she's 4. I just didn't realize they would add me to a whole other program without saying something! I got a ton of mail from them after my recertification but honestly I didn't read everything carefully because it looked like the usual paperwork. I should probably go find those letters...

Emergency allotments for CalFresh ended in April 2023, so this definitely isn't that. As others have mentioned, it sounds like you've been approved for CalWORKs, which is California's cash aid program for families with children. During your recertification, if your income qualified you for both programs, the worker would have processed both benefits. You should have received a Notice of Action (NOA) explaining your approval for CalWORKs and the benefit amount. Check your mail or your online benefits account at BenefitsCal.com. The letter will confirm if you've been approved and for how much. This isn't a mistake if you qualified, but you will have additional reporting requirements with CalWORKs. You'll need to submit a SAR7 every six months for both programs, plus CalWORKs has welfare-to-work requirements unless you have an exemption.

•Thank you for explaining! I just logged into BenefitsCal and you're right - there's a notice from last month saying I was approved for CalWORKs. I guess I missed that completely. It says something about welfare-to-work requirements... I'm already working part-time (20hrs/week), does that count or do I need to do something else?

the same exact thing happened to my cousin last month!! she got cash out of nowhere and freaked out thinking it was a mistake. she called the county and waited on hold for like 2 hours just to find out she was approved for calworks. they never even told her they were considering her for it! the system is so bad at communicating anything clearly 🙄

•The system definitely has communication problems. If your cousin (or anyone) gets tired of those ridiculous hold times, I've had good luck using Claimyr to get through to a CalFresh worker. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they basically call and wait on hold for you, then call you when a real person answers. Saved me hours last time I had weird benefit issues. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

U should spend it before they realize the mistake lol jk don't do that. But for real CalWORKs has a bunch of requirements so make sure u know what they are. My sister had to do job training and meet with a case worker every month to keep getting it

•Lol I was definitely NOT going to spend it until I figured out what was happening! I'm already working part-time at Target so hopefully that covers the work requirement. Do you know if there's a certain number of hours you have to work?

The cash deposit IS NOT an emergency allotment. CalFresh emergency allotments ended in April 2023 as part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act. What you're describing is definitely CalWORKs (cash aid) being added to your EBT card. Did you know your EBT card has two separate balances? One for food benefits (CalFresh) and one for cash benefits (CalWORKs). They're completely different programs with different rules. For CalWORKs with a child, you'll typically need to participate in Welfare-to-Work activities for 20-30 hours per week depending on your family situation. Since you mentioned having a 4-year-old, you'll likely need to meet with a Welfare-to-Work counselor to set up a plan. Your existing part-time job may fulfill some or all of the requirement. Check your mail carefully for any Notices of Action that explain your approval and requirements. If you can't find them, definitely contact your county office.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I did notice the different balances on my EBT card but didn't understand why. I found the approval notice in my BenefitsCal account and it shows I was approved last month. I'm going to call tomorrow to make sure I understand all the requirements.

make sure u know what the income reporting threshold is for calworks, its different than calfresh! if u go over it and don't report within 10 days u could get an overpayment that u have to pay back

•This is really important advice. For CalWORKs in 2025, the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) is typically around 55% of the Federal Poverty Level plus your current CalWORKs grant amount. Your NOA should list your specific IRT dollar amount. If your monthly income ever exceeds that amount, you must report it within 10 days - even if it's not time for your regular SAR7 report. The CalWORKs IRT is much lower than the CalFresh IRT, which catches many people by surprise.

Just to add to what everyone is saying - now that you have CalWORKs, your time on aid is limited. Most adults can only receive CalWORKs for a total of 48 months (4 years) in their lifetime. The months don't have to be consecutive, but they add up over time. CalFresh doesn't have a time limit like this. Make sure you understand all the requirements so you don't lose benefits or get unexpected overpayments!

•I had no idea there was a lifetime limit! That's really good to know. I'm definitely going to call tomorrow to make sure I understand everything. There's so much more to this than I realized. Thank you everyone for all the helpful information!
