Only received $10 CalFresh deposit today - is this normal amount?

I just checked my EBT card balance and only got a $10 deposit from CalFresh today. I'm so confused! My household is myself and two kids, and we normally get around $650/month. Nothing has changed with our situation - still working the same part-time job, same rent, same everything. No one called me, and I didn't get any notices in the mail about a benefit reduction. Has anyone else had their benefits suddenly drop to almost nothing? Could this be some kind of system error or did I miss something important? I've been in the CalFresh program for about 2 years now.

omg that happened to me last month!!! went from $475 to like $12 and freaked out. turned out i missed submitting some income verification they asked for in my SAR7. check ur mail from last month, might have been a notice u missed

Thanks for responding! I'm going to dig through all my mail right now. I honestly might have missed something, but it's so scary to suddenly not have enough for groceries. I'll update if I find anything.

This is definitely not normal and indicates there's been a change in your eligibility determination. Several things could have happened: 1. You may have missed your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) deadline 2. You could have missed a recertification appointment 3. The county might have received information showing a change in your circumstances (like income verification from employers) 4. There could be a system error The $10 is significant - it suggests they didn't terminate your benefits completely but drastically reduced them. This usually happens when the county believes your household income has increased but they don't have complete information. Call your county office ASAP to find out what happened. Bring any recent mail from them when you speak with them.

I bET this is exacly what happened!! Same thing with my sister last year and she had to send in all her pay stubs again. Such a pain!!

Have you checked your BenefitsCal account? Sometimes they post notices there that explain benefit changes before you get them in the mail. Also, did you recently start making more money or have someone move out of your household? They sometimes get employment info automatically from other systems and adjust benefits without telling you first if they think you didn't report a change.

I just checked BenefitsCal and there's a notice from last week saying they need verification of my new income! But I don't have new income - I've been at the same job making the same amount. I'm guessing they got incorrect information from somewhere. Going to call them first thing tomorrow.

If you need to call the county office, good luck getting through! I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone about my CalFresh benefits last month. Kept getting stuck in their phone system hell and then disconnected after waiting an hour!!! The system is BROKEN. They expect us to instantly respond to their notices but make it IMPOSSIBLE to actually talk to a human when we need help. And then they act surprised when people lose benefits. BEYOND FRUSTRATING!!!

Try using Claimyr to get through to a CalFresh worker faster. It basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when a real person answers. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar issue with my benefits getting reduced for no apparent reason. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or just go to claimyr.com. Definitely worth it when you need to resolve something urgent like benefits being cut.

Looking at the details you've shared, here's what I think happened: The system probably flagged your case for income verification. When this happens and they don't receive the requested documentation by their deadline, they implement what's called a "minimal issuance" - which is typically $10 for households that would otherwise qualify for more. This is actually better than a complete discontinuance because: 1. You remain in the system as active 2. Once you provide the documentation they need, they can often restore the full benefit amount retroactively 3. You don't have to complete a whole new application I recommend: - Call your county office (use the number on any recent notices) - Ask specifically what verification they need - Submit the documents ASAP through BenefitsCal or in person - Request retroactive benefits for this month once they confirm your income For a household of 3 in 2025, your maximum benefit should be around $740 if you qualify for the full amount.

Thank you! This makes so much sense now. I found a notice from them dated three weeks ago asking for pay stubs from my employer. Since nothing changed with my job, I assumed it was just a duplicate of stuff I'd already sent and ignored it (bad move, clearly). I'm going to submit everything through BenefitsCal tonight and visit the office tomorrow.

Make sure when you submit your income verification that you also include a written explanation that your income hasn't actually changed - sometimes they think there's new income when it's the same job. Also, if you have any expenses like childcare costs, medical bills, or high housing costs, include those too as they can help maximize your benefit amount when they recalculate.

Just wanted to update everyone - I got it resolved! Turns out my employer reported a different company name to the system (they changed ownership) so the county thought I had a second job. I submitted all my documentation and a letter explaining the situation, and they're restoring my full benefits next week plus the amount I missed this month. Such a relief! Thanks for all the advice.

So glad you got this sorted out! This is exactly why I always tell people not to panic when benefits suddenly drop - there's usually a paperwork issue that can be fixed. The employer name change thing is actually pretty common and causes a lot of confusion in the system. Great job following up and getting everything documented properly. Hope this helps other folks who might be dealing with similar issues!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm new to CalFresh and had no idea that employer name changes could cause this kind of confusion in the system. It's really reassuring to see that these issues can be resolved with the right documentation. I'm going to save this advice about including a written explanation with any income verification - that seems like it could prevent a lot of headaches. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

This is such a great example of how important it is to read ALL the notices they send, even if they seem like duplicates! I made a similar mistake last year - got a request for income verification and thought "but I already sent this stuff" so I ignored it. Ended up having my benefits suspended for a month before I figured out what happened. Now I respond to every single notice, even if it seems repetitive. The system isn't perfect at tracking what they've already received, so it's better to over-document than miss a deadline. Really glad you got everything sorted out and got your back benefits too!

This is such valuable advice! As someone who's also new to navigating government benefits, I really appreciate you sharing your experience. It's definitely a learning curve to understand that even seemingly duplicate requests need to be taken seriously. Your point about over-documenting rather than missing deadlines is something I'm going to remember. It sounds like the system errs on the side of caution (which makes sense from their perspective) but can be really stressful for recipients who are just trying to keep their benefits intact. Thanks for the reminder to treat every notice as important!

This whole thread is so helpful! I'm dealing with something similar right now - my benefits got cut from $580 to $23 this month and I've been panicking. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm realizing I probably missed responding to a verification request too. It's such a relief to know this can usually be fixed and that you can get back benefits restored. Going to dig through my mail pile tonight and check my BenefitsCal account. Thanks for sharing your story and the resolution - gives me hope that I can get this sorted out too!

You've got this, Melody! Don't panic - this thread shows that these benefit cuts are almost always fixable when it's a paperwork issue. The fact that you got $23 instead of $0 is actually a good sign (like others mentioned, it means you're still active in the system). Definitely check that mail pile and your BenefitsCal account tonight. When you find the verification request, respond to it ASAP and don't forget to include a written explanation of your current situation. The sooner you get the documentation in, the sooner they can restore your full benefits. Keep us posted on how it goes - we're all rooting for you!

This whole situation really highlights how confusing the CalFresh system can be! I'm glad you were able to resolve it, but it's frustrating that a simple employer name change can cause such a massive disruption in benefits. For anyone else reading this - I've learned that it's also worth keeping a paper trail of everything you submit. I always take screenshots when uploading documents to BenefitsCal and keep copies of any letters I send. It's saved me a couple times when they claimed they never received something I definitely sent. The system has its flaws, but at least there are ways to navigate it once you know what to look for!

This is such excellent advice about keeping a paper trail! I'm just getting started with CalFresh and hadn't thought about taking screenshots when uploading documents. That's definitely something I'll do going forward. It's kind of shocking how something as simple as an employer name change can throw the whole system for a loop, but I'm grateful to see from this thread that these issues are usually resolvable with persistence and good documentation. Thanks for sharing that tip - it could save a lot of headaches down the road!
