CalFresh emergency allotments ended? My monthly amount suddenly cut in half for family of 3
I just checked my EBT card balance and noticed they only loaded about half of what I normally get for my family of 3. We usually receive around $675 total each month, but tonight I only see $337 was added. Did something change with CalFresh benefits? I was counting on that full amount for our monthly groceries and now I'm really worried about making it through the month. Has anyone else noticed their benefits reduced? Are the pandemic emergency allotments gone for good? I didn't receive any notice about this change.

The extra COVID emergency allotments for CalFresh ended in April 2025. Everyone is back to receiving just their regular base benefit amount. There should have been notices sent out about this change, but many people report not receiving them. The base benefit is calculated on your income, household size, and expenses - that's why you're seeing about half of what you were getting before.

•Thanks for the info. I had no idea this was happening! Do you know if there's any way to get the higher amount back or any replacement program? My budget is completely based on the full amount and we're going to struggle with just the base benefit.

•It's really tough, I agree. The emergency allotments were always temporary though. Have you looked into local food banks to supplement? Also, make sure your CalFresh office has all your current expenses like rent, utilities, and childcare documented since those can increase your base benefit amount.

This is absolutely by design. They NEVER intended to keep helping us. They claim inflation is down but food costs more than ever. I got a 3% raise and my rent went up 8% and now they slash our food assistance in half?? Classic government move to hurt the working class. Been on CalFresh for 4 years and they always find new ways to cut benefits. Next they'll probably make recertification even harder.

To clarify some confusion: The emergency allotments were always meant to be temporary during the COVID public health emergency. What you're seeing now is your regular CalFresh benefit amount based on your household size, income, and expenses. If your circumstances have changed (higher rent, new childcare costs, reduced hours at work), you should report these changes as they might increase your regular benefit amount. You can submit these changes through your BenefitsCal account or by submitting verification documents to your county office. Also, the next SAR7 you submit would be a good opportunity to make sure all your current expenses are documented.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation. I had no idea the higher amount was just temporary - I guess I just got used to it. My rent actually went up $200 last month so I'll definitely report that. Do you know if they'll increase my benefits mid-period or would I have to wait until my next SAR7 or recertification?

I've been trying to reach my county worker for 3 days to ask about this same issue! The automated system just keeps disconnecting me after 45+ minutes on hold. Has anyone had luck actually reaching a human at the CalFresh office? I need to update my expenses to hopefully get my benefit amount increased since the emergency allotments ended.

•I was in the same boat last week trying to reach someone about my decreased benefits. After getting disconnected twice, I tried using Claimyr.com and actually got through to a real person at my county office in about 10 minutes. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call you back when a worker is available. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. My worker confirmed the emergency allotments ended and helped me update my expenses which got my regular benefit amount increased a bit.

Something else to consider - if your income hasn't changed but your expenses have increased (rent, utilities, childcare), you should definitely report those changes right away. Changes in expenses that exceed $100 can be reported mid-period and might increase your base benefit amount. Make sure to submit verification documents (lease agreement, utility bills, childcare receipts). Also, your county office should be able to explain exactly how your benefit amount was calculated if you have questions about why it's the specific amount you're seeing.

•do daycare receipts count?? i pay my sister $500/month to watch my kid while im at work but we dont have like official papers

•If you pay your sister for childcare, you can submit a written statement signed by both you and your sister that includes the amount you pay, how often, and for which children. If your sister isn't part of your CalFresh household, this expense could potentially increase your benefit amount.

•That's unfortunately not accurate information. The emergency allotments were tied specifically to the COVID public health emergency declaration, which has officially ended. There are currently no plans at the federal or state level to reinstate them. Your regular CalFresh benefits will continue, but the temporary extra amount is not coming back. It's best to adjust your budget planning accordingly.

Update: I finally got through to my county office! My worker confirmed what everyone here said about the emergency allotments ending. She helped me update my expenses (my rent went up and I had never reported my full utility costs before). My benefit amount will increase to $422 next month, which is still less than before but better than $337. Thanks everyone for the help and information!

•That's great news! How long did it take you to get through to them? I'm still trying with no luck.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got a callback within 20 minutes. Definitely worth it instead of waiting on hold for hours. My worker was actually really helpful once I got through.

I'm dealing with the same situation - my benefits dropped from $580 to $294 for my household of 2. It's really helpful reading everyone's experiences here. I had no idea the emergency allotments were temporary, and like others mentioned, I never received any notice about this change. I'm going to try updating my expenses since my utilities have gone up significantly this winter. Has anyone had success getting their county office to backdate expense changes, or do they only apply going forward? Also wondering if there are any other food assistance programs I should look into to help bridge this gap.
