CalFresh benefit amount suddenly tiny in March 2025 - normal or error?
Just checked my EBT card balance after my CalFresh benefits loaded this month and I'm shocked at how little I got. Only $89 for a single-person household! Last month I was getting $297 which was already barely enough for groceries with these crazy prices. Did the benefit amounts change for 2025? Is anyone else getting WAY smaller amounts suddenly or did something go wrong with my case? I didn't report any income changes and nothing in my situation has changed at all. Just worried about how I'm gonna eat for the whole month on such a tiny amount...

•Glad it's not just me (well not glad, but you know what I mean). Did you get any letters in the mail? I'm wondering if I missed something important.

This is likely due to the end of the Emergency Allotment supplements that were providing maximum benefits to all households regardless of income calculation. Starting this month, CalFresh returned to the normal calculation formula where your income and expenses determine your benefit amount. Check your most recent Notice of Action - there should have been a letter explaining the change. If your income went up or expenses went down (even slightly), this can dramatically affect your benefit calculation. Also verify that all your deductions are being counted correctly (rent/mortgage, utilities, medical expenses for seniors/disabled, childcare costs).

•but we havent had emergency allotments since like 2023?? this is a new decrease that just happened this month

•You're right about the emergency allotments ending earlier. In that case, this could be due to the annual cost-of-living adjustments that happen each October but sometimes get delayed in implementation, or more likely, there was a change in how your income is being calculated. A few possibilities: 1. Did you receive a semi-annual report (SAR7) recently that you completed? 2. Did your utility costs change with the season? 3. Has your household composition been verified recently? 4. Did you recently recertify and perhaps some deductions weren't properly recorded? The county should have sent a Notice of Action explaining exactly why your benefits changed. If you can't find this notice, you need to contact your county office for an explanation.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! I've been on CalFresh for 4 years and EVERY SINGLE TIME there's some kind of adjustment or recalculation they MESS IT UP! My worker told me last year they're using some new automated system for calculating benefits in 2025 and guess what? IT'S GARBAGE!! You need to call your county office IMMEDIATELY and demand to speak to a worker about this. Don't accept the automated system's answers. They probably made a mistake on your income calculation. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these people!!!

•Wow ok I'll definitely call tomorrow. The thought of going through their phone system makes me want to cry though! I never get through.

•If you're having trouble getting through on the county phone lines, you might want to try using Claimyr. It's a service that waits on hold with the CalFresh office for you and then calls you when a real person is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar issue with my benefits suddenly dropping. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Worth it when you need to get answers about something as important as your food money!

This could be because of the new COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) for 2025. If your income stayed the same but is now closer to the eligibility threshold due to updated federal poverty level guidelines, your benefit amount might decrease. Also, check if your utility allowance changed. During certain months, they switch between the standard utility allowance and the limited utility allowance which can impact your benefit amount by $100+ easily. Finally, make sure all your actual expenses are being counted! Many people don't know you can deduct things like: - Full rent/mortgage amount - Utility costs (or the standard allowance) - Medical expenses over $35 for elderly/disabled - Child support payments - Childcare costs related to work/education If you can prove higher expenses, your benefit amount should increase.

•wait they can count childcare costs?? i pay $850/month for daycare and nobody ever told me that counted!!

•Yes! Childcare costs are a HUGE deduction that many people don't know about. You need to provide verification (receipts or a statement from your provider), but it can make a significant difference in your benefit calculation. Contact your worker immediately and ask for your case to be recalculated with the childcare expense included. They should be able to apply this retroactively for the current benefit period as well!

•This is not accurate information. There is no system-wide glitch affecting March 2025 benefits. Individual calculation errors can occur, but there is no widespread system issue currently. Please be careful about spreading unverified information that might prevent people from properly addressing their individual case issues through the appropriate channels.

Based on the timing, I suspect this is related to your SAR7 processing. Even if you reported no changes, sometimes the information is interpreted differently or a verification document was missed. Here's what you should do: 1. Locate your most recent Notice of Action - it must legally explain any benefit changes 2. Check your mail carefully for any requests for verification you might have missed 3. Call your county office and specifically ask: - Was my SAR7 processed completely? - Are all my deductions being counted? - Has my income been calculated correctly? - Why specifically did my benefit amount change? Also, 2025 had some changes to the benefit calculation formula, but nothing that should cause such a dramatic decrease without some other factor involved. This sounds like either a missing deduction or an income calculation error.

•Thank you, this is really helpful. I'll gather all my paperwork tonight and call them tomorrow to ask these specific questions. I'm pretty sure I sent in all the verification they asked for with my SAR7, but maybe something got lost.

EXACTLY THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME LAST MONTH!!! Turned out they "estimated" my income based on one higher-than-normal paycheck even though I provided ALL my check stubs. They somehow counted my income as 30% higher than it actually was!!! When I finally got through to a worker (took 3 days of calling), they fixed it and issued a supplement for the missing amount within 48 hours. FIGHT THIS!!

•This is a common issue. The CalFresh system is supposed to average your income across the certification period, but sometimes it incorrectly uses a single higher paycheck to project monthly income. If you worked overtime, got a bonus, or just had more hours in one pay period, this can trigger an incorrect calculation. Always keep copies of ALL pay stubs for exactly this reason.

does anyone know if we get less benefits if we have money in savings? i deposited my tax refund last month (about $1200) and now im worried that made my benefits go down

•CalFresh doesn't count your savings or bank account balances when determining eligibility or benefit amounts in most cases. Assets/resources are not counted for most households. Your benefits are primarily calculated based on income, household size, and allowable deductions. A tax refund also doesn't count as income for CalFresh purposes. So your deposit shouldn't have affected your benefits at all.

UPDATE: I finally got through to my county office this morning! Turns out there were TWO problems: 1. They miscalculated my income based on that one week I worked extra hours (they thought that was my regular pay) 2. Somehow my utility deduction got removed during my SAR7 processing The worker fixed both issues and said I should get the correct amount (plus back benefits for this month) within 10 days. She also updated my case notes to prevent this from happening again. For anyone else with suddenly lower benefits, definitely call and speak to a real person! The worker told me several people have had similar issues this month because of changes to their processing system.

•HA! I knew it! ALWAYS CALL AND QUESTION THESE THINGS! They make "mistakes" constantly and most people just accept the lower amounts without fighting back. GOOD FOR YOU for advocating for yourself!!!
