EBT Edge app down for anyone else? Can't access CalFresh balance since this afternoon
I've been trying to check my CalFresh balance since around 2pm today but the EBT Edge app keeps crashing! It was working fine this morning when I checked my remaining balance after grocery shopping. Now when I try to log in, it either freezes on the loading screen or gives me some vague error message about 'service unavailable.' I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, restarting my phone, and even tried logging in through the website, but nothing's working. This is super stressful because I'm planning my monthly shopping trip tomorrow and need to know exactly how much I have left. Anyone else having this issue or is it just me? Any ideas how long these outages usually last?

Yep, mine's completely down too. Been trying since 1:30pm. Called the number on the back of my EBT card and the automated system is working (you can check your balance that way), but the app is definitely having issues. The customer service rep I finally reached said they're having a system-wide outage affecting the app and website. They didn't give me an ETA for when it would be fixed, just said they're "working on it.

•Thanks for confirming it's not just me! I didn't even think to call the number on the back of the card - good idea. Did they say what caused the outage? I hate how they never give us any warning when these things happen.

HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! The Edge app is the WORST. This is like the 3rd time this month it's gone down with no warning. Last time it lasted almost 2 days!!! The county workers act like we're crazy when we complain. you can call 1-877-328-9677 to check your balance over the phone at least

I spoke with a CalFresh eligibility worker this morning about a different issue (needed to add my newborn to my case), and she mentioned they were expecting some maintenance on their systems today. Apparently, it was supposed to be brief (2-3 hours), but it sounds like it's taking longer than expected. The EBT Edge app connects to the same backend systems, which is why it's affected. The good news is that your EBT card will still work at stores even if the app is down. The balance tracking system and the transaction processing system are separate, so you can still use your benefits - you just can't check the balance through the app right now. If you absolutely need to know your balance, call the number on the back of your card as others have suggested.

•That's really helpful information, thank you! Good to know I can still use my card tomorrow. I just like to have an exact amount before I go shopping so I don't have any embarrassing moments at checkout if I miscalculated. I'll try calling the number tonight.

I'm having the same issue and was getting really frustrated trying to reach someone at my county office. After being on hold for 45 minutes and getting disconnected twice, I found a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at my county CalFresh office! They were able to confirm the system issues and gave me my current balance while the app is down. If you need to reach someone at your county office quickly, check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The county worker told me the system should be back up by tomorrow morning. Apparently they're doing some updates to improve the app's reliability (ironic, I know).

•Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to reach someone at my county office for weeks about another issue too (missing verification documents I submitted). If the app isn't working by tomorrow I might try this Claimyr thing.

•That's actually a really smart idea! Going to start doing that from now on. Would save me a lot of stress.

This is an ongoing issue with the EBT Edge app across California. I'm a community resource specialist, and we've been getting reports about app outages throughout January and February 2025. Here are some workarounds until they fix it: 1. Call the EBT customer service number: 1-877-328-9677 (works 24/7) 2. You can check your balance at any store that accepts EBT (just ask the cashier to check before you shop) 3. Some ATMs can display your EBT cash balance (if you have CalWORKs) 4. The BenefitsCal website sometimes works when the app doesn't Also, keep in mind that monthly CalFresh benefits are loaded on a staggered schedule based on the last digit of your case number (between the 1st and 10th of each month). The system tends to be most unstable around these high-traffic periods.

•Thank you for these tips! I didn't know cashiers could check my balance - that's helpful. My benefits usually load on the 5th (last digit of my case is 4), and it's been pretty reliable with that. It's just the app that's constantly having issues.

UPDATE: App seems to be working again! Just checked and was able to log in and see my balance. Try again everyone.

•Just checked - you're right! Working for me now too. Thanks for the update! My balance is lower than I thought though... going to need to be careful with my shopping trip tomorrow.

Same thing happened to me last month during my grocery run - so embarrassing when your card gets declined at checkout because you thought you had more left! Now I always keep a little notebook in my purse where I write down my balance after every shopping trip, plus I save my receipts so I can do the math myself if the app goes down. It's old school but it works! Also found out that some grocery stores (like Safeway) will let you do a balance inquiry at self-checkout without buying anything - just select EBT and then "balance inquiry" before you start shopping.
