CalFresh EBT Edge app error message and frozen card - urgent help needed!

I'm freaking out right now because since yesterday morning, my CalFresh EBT Edge app keeps showing some error message (it just says 'System Unavailable' with a red exclamation mark). I've tried logging out and back in about 20 times, deleted the app and reinstalled it, and even restarted my phone. Nothing works! The worst part is my EBT card seems completely frozen - I tried to buy groceries last night and the payment was declined. The cashier said there was no balance available, but I KNOW I just got my benefits loaded 3 days ago (should have $672 for my family of 4). I've tried calling the number on the back of my card but got stuck in an endless automated system. My kids are hungry and I'm completely panicking. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a system-wide outage or just my account? Any ideas on how to fix this ASAP?

This actually happened system-wide in several counties last month. The Edge app sometimes has these glitches when they're doing maintenance, but your benefits should still be there. Have you tried these steps: 1. Wait 2-3 hours and try again (sometimes it resolves itself) 2. Check if you can access your account on the BenefitsCal website instead of the app 3. Try using your physical EBT card at an ATM just to check the balance (not to withdraw cash) If none of those work, you'll need to speak with a county worker directly. The problem is unlikely to be with your eligibility or benefits - it sounds like a technical issue with the EBT system.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried waiting overnight but still getting the same error. I can't log into BenefitsCal either - it says my account is temporarily unavailable! I did try checking my balance at an ATM and it says "Unable to process request" which is making me even more worried. Do you know how long the system issues lasted last month?

I'm in San Bernardino County. So it must be happening in multiple places! Have you been able to get through to anyone on the phone? I've tried calling like 10 times but keep getting disconnected.

This is almost certainly a system outage, not an issue with your individual benefits. When this happened in January, it was related to a scheduled system update that went wrong. The problem is getting through to someone who can confirm this. If you're in a dire situation with no food, you can visit your local food bank while waiting for this to resolve. You should also know that during system outages, many grocery stores can process manual EBT vouchers (though not all cashiers know how to do this). Ask to speak with a store manager and explain the situation - they may be able to process a manual transaction up to $40. For getting official information, I highly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach a CalFresh worker. It helps you skip the phone queues and connects you directly to a live person. I was skeptical at first but their system actually works - you can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. That's your best bet for getting official information about when the system will be back up.

I second using Claimyr to get through to a real person. I used it last week when my SAR7 wasn't processed correctly and got connected in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours! They should be able to tell you when the system will be back up or if there's something specific with your account.

have u tried not using the PIN? sometimes if u enter pin wrong too many times it locks u out. try just swiping card without pin

I didn't know that was even possible! But I only entered my PIN once at the store before it got declined. I'm pretty sure I used the right one - it's the same PIN I've had for 2 years. But I'll try again without PIN if that's actually an option?

Just to clarify - you always need to enter a PIN with EBT transactions. There's no option to swipe without a PIN. If you enter the wrong PIN too many times (usually 4), your card will get locked for 24 hours as a security measure. You might want to try again with your PIN now if 24 hours have passed since your first attempt.

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DOWN!!! I just got off the phone with a supervisor at my county office (after trying for HOURS) and they confirmed there's a statewide EBT system outage. They're working on fixing it but don't have an estimated time when it will be resolved. The supervisor said our benefits are safe and will be available once the system is back up. She also said if you're in an emergency situation, you can go to your local office IN PERSON and they can issue emergency vouchers if you have no other way to get food. I know it's frustrating but at least we know it's not just our individual accounts being messed up. I was worried I'd been cut off for some reason!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this info!! I've been so worried! How did you manage to actually get through to a supervisor? I've been calling non-stop and can't get past the automated system.

I literally called 23 times and finally got through on the 24th attempt. I just kept hitting '0' at every prompt until it finally connected me to someone. Then I had to wait on hold for another 45 minutes. It was ridiculous! But at least now we know what's happening.

I work for a community organization that partners with CalFresh, and I can confirm this is a statewide issue. According to our contacts, the EBT system is experiencing technical difficulties due to a failed server migration that was scheduled for last night. They're estimating it will be resolved by end of day today, but it could potentially extend into tomorrow. For anyone experiencing hardship because of this, here are some resources: 1. If you need immediate food assistance, visit your local food bank (findafoodbank.org) 2. For families with children, check if your school district has emergency meal programs 3. Your county office can issue emergency vouchers as someone mentioned 4. Some larger grocery stores are able to process manual EBT transactions during outages Remember that your benefits are not lost - they're just temporarily inaccessible while the system is down. No need to reapply or worry about your eligibility status.

This is SO helpful! Thank you for the clear information and resources. I was starting to worry my account had been canceled or something. I'll check with my kids' school about emergency meals until the system is back up.

For anyone finding this thread later: This kind of system outage happens about 2-3 times a year with CalFresh. If you experience something similar: 1. Check if others are having the same issue (forums like this or calling friends who also use EBT) 2. Try not to panic - system outages usually resolve within 24-48 hours 3. If you need to reach someone at the county office, try Claimyr or visit in person 4. Remember your benefits aren't lost, just temporarily inaccessible 5. Use alternative food resources (food banks, school meals) during the outage 6. Once resolved, check that your full balance is restored It's also good practice to keep a small emergency food supply for these situations if possible. And remember to save a screenshot of your balance after each monthly deposit so you have proof of what should be available when systems return.

This is such good advice. I was not prepared for this at all. Definitely going to keep some emergency food on hand and take screenshots from now on. I never realized the system could just go down like this! Thanks for all the help everyone.

I'm so glad this got resolved quickly! As someone who's been through a few of these system outages, I wanted to add that it's also worth knowing that during major outages like this, some community organizations and churches will sometimes set up emergency food distributions specifically for EBT users who are affected. If you're on any local community Facebook groups or NextDoor, those are good places to check for announcements about emergency food resources during system outages. Also, for future reference, the California EBT Customer Service line (1-877-328-9677) usually has a recorded message about known system issues when there are statewide outages - sometimes that's faster than trying to get through to a live person. Hope everyone was able to get the food they needed!

Thank you for these additional tips! I had no idea about the recorded message on the customer service line - that would have saved me so much stress if I'd known to check that first. I'm definitely going to join some local community groups on Facebook too. It's really reassuring to know there are backup resources during these outages. This whole experience taught me how vulnerable we can be when the system goes down, but also how helpful this community is when people share information and support each other!

This thread has been so helpful to read through! As someone new to CalFresh, I had no idea that system outages like this could happen. I just got approved last month and this would have completely panicked me if my card suddenly stopped working. It's really good to know that the benefits don't disappear during technical issues and that there are resources like food banks and emergency vouchers available. I'm definitely going to save screenshots of my balance and keep some emergency food supplies on hand now. Thank you to everyone who shared updates and advice - this community is amazing for supporting each other through these situations!

Welcome to CalFresh and this community! I'm also relatively new (got approved about 6 months ago) and I wish I had known about potential system outages too. Reading through everyone's experiences here really shows how important it is to be prepared and to have this kind of supportive community. One thing I learned from this thread that I hadn't thought of before is keeping screenshots of your balance - that's such a smart idea for peace of mind during outages. It's also really comforting to know that people here are so willing to share real-time updates and practical advice when these issues happen. Thanks for adding your perspective as another newcomer!
