Can my inactive CalFresh EBT card still work for Museums for All discounts?
So my CalFresh benefits stopped about 3 months ago (missed my recertification deadline - totally my fault). I still have my physical EBT card though. I just found out about this Museums for All program where you can get discounted/free admission to museums with an EBT card. Has anyone tried using their card for museum discounts after their benefits were discontinued? Will they actually check if the card is active or just look at the physical card? Money's tight and my kids would love to go to the science center this weekend.

Yes! I've used my EBT card for museum discounts even when I wasn't receiving benefits. Most museums just look at the physical card as proof of low-income status - they don't actually swipe it or check if it has a balance. I took my kids to the natural history museum last month and just showed them my card at the ticket counter. Got in for $3 each instead of $18!

•That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know - will definitely try it this weekend. Did they ask to see ID matching the name on the card?

it DEPENDS on the museum tbh. some just look at the card, others might check. i went to art museum downtown and they just glanced at my card. but aquarium actually swiped it (didnt work cuz no benefits) but then manager came over and still gave me discount when i explained situation. worth a try!!!

•Thanks! I appreciate knowing it might vary by location. I'll bring some backup ID just in case.

I work for a cultural institution that participates in Museums for All, and I can confirm this varies by museum. The official program guidelines only require showing an EBT card, not verifying active benefits. Most museums follow this policy because: 1. They can't access the benefit system to check balances 2. The program is meant to increase accessibility for low-income families 3. Processing staff aren't trained to verify benefit status But since policies vary, I recommend calling ahead to ask about their specific requirements. And while you're sorting out museum visits, you might want to consider reapplying for CalFresh if you're still eligible - the recertification denial doesn't prevent you from submitting a new application.

•Thank you for the insider perspective! I'll definitely call the science center beforehand. And yes, I'm planning to reapply for CalFresh next week - just been putting it off because of work hours.

I tried using my card at the children's museum after my benefits stopped and they TURNED ME AWAY! So embarrassing with my kids right there. The lady at the counter said "this card isn't active" like I was trying to scam them or something!!! Different places have different policies I guess. Such a frustrating system.

•That's totally inappropriate! Museums for All is supposed to be about access, not scrutinizing whether your benefits are current. Most participants don't even check. If you remember which staff member it was, consider reporting this to museum management - they should train their staff better on program guidelines.

While trying to get museum discounts, have you also considered reapplying for CalFresh? I know getting through to the county office can be frustrating. When my benefits stopped last year, I used Claimyr to reach a live person at the county office without waiting on hold all day. Their service connects you directly with a caseworker. Just go to claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Got my benefits reinstated much faster than expected.

•I've never heard of this service! This could be really helpful since I work during their call hours and can never stay on hold that long. Definitely going to check this out before applying again.

most of these museums just want to see the physical card, they dont actuly check. my friend works at science museum and says they NEVER verify benefits. they just need to see the card for their grant requirements or something. u should be fine!!!!

Just to clarify some confusion in this thread: Museums for All is a national access program specifically designed for SNAP EBT cardholders (CalFresh in California). The official program guidelines state that participants simply need to present an EBT card to receive discounted admission - there's no requirement to verify active benefits. Most museums follow these guidelines, but implementation can vary by institution. If you're interested in which museums participate, check the official website: museumsforall.org. There are over 1,000 participating museums nationwide with many options in California.

•Thank you for this information! I just checked the website and found three more museums near me that I didn't know participated. This will be great for summer activities with the kids.

While your card will likely work for museum discounts, don't forget to reapply for CalFresh if you're still eligible! You mentioned missing recertification, but that doesn't affect a new application. CalFresh income limits increased for 2025 - a family of 4 can now earn up to $4,050 monthly (gross) and still qualify. The application process is much faster now through BenefitsCal.com than it used to be.

•I didn't realize the income limits had gone up! That's good news - with my current part-time job we should definitely still qualify. I'll submit a new application this weekend.

Hey Zoe! I'm in a similar situation - my benefits ended a few months ago but I still have my card. I've successfully used it at 4 different museums in the Bay Area without any issues. They all just looked at the physical card and gave me the discount immediately. My tip: go during busy times when staff are rushing and less likely to scrutinize. Also, if you have kids with you, staff tend to be more accommodating because they can see you're genuinely trying to provide educational opportunities for your family. The science center should definitely work - they're usually really good about the program!

•This is such helpful advice! Going during busy times is smart - I hadn't thought of that. And you're right, having the kids there probably does help show it's for a good cause. Thanks for sharing your experience with multiple museums, it gives me more confidence to try it this weekend!

I've been using my inactive EBT card for Museums for All discounts for over a year now with great success! I've visited about 8 different museums and cultural centers throughout California, and only had one place (a small local museum) try to verify benefits. Even then, when I explained my situation, they still honored the discount. My experience has been that larger museums with more established programs are very accommodating. The California Science Center, Natural History Museum, and Getty are all super easy-going about it. Pro tip: if you're worried, you can always call ahead and ask about their specific policy. Most will tell you they just need to see the physical card. Also, don't feel bad about using this benefit - you qualified for assistance before, and the whole point of Museums for All is to make cultural experiences accessible to families who need financial help. That need doesn't disappear the moment your benefits end! Hope you and your kids have a great time at the science center this weekend.

•Thank you so much for this detailed response! It's really reassuring to hear about your success at so many different places, especially the bigger museums you mentioned. I feel much better about trying this now. You're absolutely right about not feeling bad - we did qualify before and it's not like our financial situation magically improved overnight. I really appreciate the encouragement and the reminder about what this program is actually for. Definitely calling the science center first thing tomorrow to check their policy!

I've had mixed experiences with this - used my expired EBT card at 3 museums last year and it worked at 2 of them. The California Academy of Sciences in SF just glanced at it and gave us the discount no problem. But at one smaller museum they actually tried to scan it, saw it wasn't active, and initially said no. I politely explained that the Museums for All website doesn't mention needing active benefits, just showing the card, and the manager came over and approved it. So it really does depend on the individual staff member and their training. My advice would be to go in confident, bring ID just in case, and don't be afraid to politely advocate for yourself if needed. The worst they can say is no, but most places will honor it. Good luck at the science center!

•This is really helpful to know about the California Academy of Sciences! I was actually thinking about taking my kids there too if the science center goes well. It's good to hear that most places are understanding even when staff initially say no - I'll definitely keep that tip in mind about referencing the official Museums for All guidelines if I run into any issues. Thanks for sharing both the successful and challenging experiences, it helps set realistic expectations!

I'm in a very similar boat! My CalFresh ended about 2 months ago when I started working more hours and went over the income limit, but I kept my EBT card. Last weekend I took my daughter to the Exploratorium in San Francisco and just showed them the physical card - they didn't even hesitate, just gave us the $5 admission per person instead of the regular $30! The staff member said they see EBT cards all the time and never check if they're active. I think most museums understand that families who qualified for benefits before are still likely dealing with tight budgets. Definitely worth trying - worst case scenario you pay full price, but best case you save a ton of money and give your kids an amazing experience!

•Wow, the Exploratorium for $5 is an amazing deal! That's such a huge savings from the regular price. It's really encouraging to hear that the staff there are so familiar with the program and don't make it complicated. I'm feeling much more confident about trying this now - you're right that even if it doesn't work out, we're not worse off than we would have been. Thanks for sharing your recent success story, it's exactly what I needed to hear!

I just wanted to add that if you do encounter any issues at museums, it might help to know that California also has other discount programs for low-income families that don't require active benefits! The California State Parks system offers a fee waiver program for families who received CalFresh/SNAP in the past year, and many city recreation centers have sliding scale programs too. Also, don't forget about your local library - most have museum passes you can check out for free! Our library has passes to 6 different museums and they never ask about income verification. It's worth calling around to see what's available in your area as backup options while you're getting back on your feet financially.

•This is such valuable information! I had no idea about the library museum passes - that's brilliant! I'm definitely going to check what our local library has available. The state parks fee waiver is also news to me, and with summer coming up that could be really helpful for family outings. It's so nice to know there are multiple backup options beyond just the Museums for All program. Thank you for taking the time to share all these resources!

I used to work at ticket sales for a major museum in LA, and I can tell you that most places following Museums for All guidelines are specifically trained NOT to verify benefit status. The program exists because museums recognize that financial hardship doesn't end the moment benefits stop. We were told to simply look for the physical EBT card and process the discount - no swiping, no balance checking, no questions asked. The only time we'd ask for additional ID was if the name on the card was clearly different from the person presenting it. I'd say you have about a 95% chance of success, especially at larger, well-established museums. The science center should be totally fine! Just present your card confidently and enjoy the day with your kids.

•This is incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who actually worked in ticket sales! It makes so much sense that museums would train staff not to verify benefits - the whole point is accessibility, not creating barriers. Knowing that it's official policy at most places gives me the confidence to just walk up and present my card without overthinking it. I really appreciate you sharing the insider perspective on how the program actually works from the museum's side. This has been such a helpful thread overall - feeling much better about taking the kids this weekend!

Just wanted to share another success story to add to the pile! I'm a single mom whose CalFresh benefits ended about 6 months ago when I got a small raise at work (still barely making ends meet though). I've been using my inactive EBT card at museums ever since and it's worked at every single place I've tried - including the California Science Center, which is exactly where you're planning to go! The staff there are super friendly and familiar with the program. I went there twice last year with my two boys and both times they just glanced at my card and immediately processed the discount. No questions, no hassle, just "here are your discounted tickets, have a great visit!" What I love about the science center specifically is that once you're inside, there's SO much to do that you can easily spend the whole day there, making that discounted admission an incredible value. My kids still talk about the space shuttle exhibit months later. You're going to have such a great time with your kids - don't let worries about the card hold you back from making those memories!

•This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your specific experience at the California Science Center - that's literally where we're planning to go this weekend. It's so reassuring to know that not only did it work there, but that the staff were friendly about it and you've been back multiple times successfully. The space shuttle exhibit sounds amazing - my kids are going to be so excited! I really appreciate you taking the time to share this, especially as another single parent who gets how tight money can be even when you're working. This whole thread has given me so much confidence. We're definitely going this Saturday!

I've been following this thread and wanted to add my own experience! My benefits ended last summer when I briefly went over the income limit, but I've continued using my EBT card for Museums for All with great success. I've been to probably 6-7 different museums across SoCal and NorCal, and it's worked every single time. What I've noticed is that most museum staff are genuinely happy to provide the discount - they understand that families who previously qualified for assistance are still dealing with financial constraints. I've never felt judged or questioned about it. One thing that might help ease your mind: I actually called the California Science Center's guest services line before my first visit there, and they confirmed that they just need to see the physical EBT card - no verification of active benefits required. The person I spoke with said they see EBT cards all day long and it's a very routine part of their admission process. Your kids are going to LOVE the science center! The hands-on exhibits are incredible, and knowing you got in at such a great price will let you relax and really enjoy the experience with them. Don't hesitate - this is exactly what the program is designed for!

•Thank you so much for calling the California Science Center directly - that's such a smart idea and gives me complete peace of mind! It's really helpful to know that they confirmed their policy over the phone. I love that you mentioned how the staff are genuinely happy to provide the discount - that makes me feel so much better about the whole experience. Reading everyone's success stories in this thread has been amazing, but knowing you've had such consistent positive experiences across multiple museums really seals the deal for me. We're absolutely going this weekend and I can't wait to see my kids' faces when they see those exhibits!

I'm a librarian at a public library system in California, and I wanted to chime in with some additional resources that might help! Many of our patrons are in similar situations - benefits have ended but financial struggles continue. Beyond Museums for All, here are some other programs to look into: 1. **Library Museum Passes**: Most CA libraries have free museum passes you can reserve online or by phone. We have passes to 12 different museums including some science centers, and there's no income verification required - just a valid library card. 2. **Bank of America Museums on Us**: If you have a Bank of America debit/credit card, you get free admission to participating museums the first weekend of every month. Many families use this alongside their EBT card discounts. 3. **Community Center Programs**: Many city rec centers offer discounted family passes to local attractions if you can show proof of previous benefit enrollment (even expired documentation). 4. **School District Family Engagement Programs**: If your kids are in public school, check with the main office - many districts have partnerships with local cultural institutions for free family passes. The California Science Center is definitely EBT-friendly based on what I've heard from our patrons. Hope you have an amazing time with your kids this weekend!

•This is incredibly helpful information! I had no idea there were so many different programs available beyond just Museums for All. The library museum passes sound amazing - I'm definitely going to check our library's website tonight to see what they have available. And the Bank of America Museums on Us program is news to me too - we do have a BofA account so that could be another great option for future visits. I really appreciate you taking the time to compile all these resources, especially coming from someone who works with families in similar situations every day. It's so reassuring to know there are multiple ways to access these cultural experiences for our kids even when money is tight. Thank you!

Hey! I'm so glad you asked about this because I was in the exact same situation a few months ago. My CalFresh benefits ended when I started getting slightly more hours at work, but I kept my EBT card and have been using it successfully for museum discounts ever since! I've been to 4 different museums in the past few months - including the California Science Center twice - and it's worked perfectly every time. The staff just look at the physical card and give you the discounted rate immediately. At the Science Center specifically, they're super familiar with the program and process it without any questions. What really helped me was realizing that the Museums for All program is designed exactly for families like ours - people who previously qualified for assistance and are still managing tight budgets. The whole point is accessibility, not creating hoops to jump through. My kids absolutely loved the Science Center! The space shuttle Endeavour exhibit is incredible, and there's so much hands-on stuff that you can easily spend 4-5 hours there. At the discounted price, it's such an amazing value for a full day of entertainment and learning. Don't overthink it - just bring your card and enjoy the day with your kids. You've got this! 🚀

I just wanted to add my experience as someone who's been in your exact situation! My CalFresh benefits ended about 4 months ago when I missed my recertification interview (work schedule conflict), but I've been successfully using my EBT card for Museums for All discounts ever since. I've visited 5 different museums throughout California, and the California Science Center was actually the first place I tried it. The staff there are incredibly welcoming and familiar with the program - they just glanced at my card and immediately processed the discount. No questions, no hassle, just "enjoy your visit!" What I love about the Science Center specifically is that it's such a full day experience. My 8 and 10-year-olds spent hours in the ecosystems exhibit and couldn't stop talking about the earthquake simulator. The fact that you can get in for such a reduced price makes it feel like you're giving your kids this amazing educational experience without the financial stress. One tip: if you're planning to visit other museums in the future, I'd recommend checking out the Natural History Museum and the Getty Center too - both were super easy with the EBT card and have incredible exhibits that kids love. Don't hesitate about this weekend - your kids are going to have such an amazing time, and you should feel good about using a program that exists specifically to make these experiences accessible to families like ours! 🎆

It really helps to know that I'm not alone in this and that the Science Center staff are so welcoming about the program. The earthquake simulator and ecosystems exhibit sound amazing - my kids are going to be so excited! I also really appreciate the recommendations for future visits to the Natural History Museum and Getty Center. It's wonderful to have a whole list of EBT-friendly places to explore with the kids throughout the year. Thank you for the reassurance and for sharing such specific details about your Science Center experience - I'm feeling completely confident about going this weekend now! 🎆

I just wanted to share my recent experience to add to all the positive stories here! I'm a newcomer to this community but have been dealing with a similar situation. My CalFresh benefits ended about 2 months ago due to a change in my work hours, but I still had my physical EBT card. Last weekend I took my kids to the California Science Center and it went perfectly! I was honestly nervous reading some of the mixed experiences in this thread, but the staff there were so professional and kind. I just presented my EBT card at the ticket counter and they immediately gave us the discounted admission without any questions or verification attempts. My kids (ages 7 and 9) had an absolute blast - they're still talking about the space shuttle and the earthquake simulator! We spent almost 6 hours there and it felt like such great value for the discounted price. For anyone else who might be hesitant like I was, I'd say definitely go for it. The worst that could happen is you pay regular admission, but based on all these experiences (and now mine too), it seems like the vast majority of museums honor the program exactly as it's intended - to provide access to families who need it, regardless of current benefit status. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories here - it really gave me the confidence to try it! 🚀
