CalFresh 'extra payment' missing for May 2025 - did anyone else not get it?
I usually get my regular CalFresh benefits on the 10th, and then there's been this extra payment that hits our EBT around the 15th for the past few months. I checked my balance this morning and only saw my regular amount loaded - no extra benefits! Did they stop the supplemental payment program? Did anyone else miss getting their extra CalFresh amount today? My family was counting on it for our grocery budget this month and I'm freaking out a little. I'm on CalSAWS system in Los Angeles County if that matters.

Those 'extra' payments weren't permanent - they were part of the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) supplement that was temporary. The state sent notices about this ending in April 2025. The last supplemental payment was scheduled for last month. You should have received a notice in the mail explaining the change. Your regular CalFresh benefits will continue as normal on your standard issuance date based on your case number.

•Omg I totally missed that notice! We get so much mail from the county I must have thrown it out thinking it was just another duplicate. That really sucks for our budget. Do you know if there are any other supplemental programs replacing it?

•Same problem here, was counting on that extra $275 for my kids. Called the county office but couldn't get through - just endless hold music then disconnected after 45 minutes. Typical.

The supplemental benefits program officially ended as of April 30, 2025. The state sent notices to all recipients in March. Your regular CalFresh benefits should continue without interruption, but the supplemental amount was always designed as a temporary program. If you're experiencing hardship due to this change, you can request a reassessment of your benefit amount if your circumstances have changed (income decrease, increase in household size, etc.). You can also check with your local food bank for additional assistance during the transition period.

•Thanks for explaining! Would reporting higher rent help increase my regular benefit amount? My landlord raised our rent by $200 last month but I haven't reported it yet because I was waiting for my SAR7.

ugh this happens EVERY TIME the state gives us something good. they always take it away without proper notice!! i bet the "notices" they claim they sent never even went out. typical bureaucratic nonsense. my worker even told me these payments would continue "indefinitely" back in january. they cant keep changing the rules on people who depend on this food assistance!!

•While I understand your frustration, I can confirm that notices were definitely sent out. I received mine in mid-March. The program was always labeled as temporary in all official documentation. If your worker told you it was indefinite, they provided incorrect information. You might want to request a benefit reassessment if your circumstances warrant it - sometimes you can get an increase in your regular benefits based on updated expense information.

I've been trying to reach someone at my county office for THREE DAYS to ask about this exact issue! Constant busy signals or being put on hold forever. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and had a county worker call me back within an hour. The worker confirmed the supplemental program ended April 30th. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me hours of frustration!

•Yeah it really did work! I was skeptical too, but after wasting so much time on hold I was desperate. Got a call back from an actual county worker in 58 minutes.

If you're struggling with the reduction in benefits, make sure you're reporting ALL your allowable expenses on your next recertification or SAR7. Many people don't realize that reporting higher housing costs, utility bills, childcare expenses, and medical expenses (for elderly or disabled household members) can increase your regular CalFresh amount. Also, the standard deduction increased this year, which might help offset some of the loss from the supplemental program ending.

•I definitely need to update my expenses! My childcare costs went up and I'm paying more for utilities now too. I'll make sure to include all that on my next SAR7. Thank you!

anybody know if the extra payment might come back later this year? I heard some rumor about it returning in July with the new fiscal year but cant find anything official about it

•There are currently no official plans to reinstate the supplemental program. The funding was tied to a specific budget allocation that has now expired. Any future supplemental programs would require new legislation and funding. I would recommend not counting on its return in your budget planning for now.

Just to clarify some misinformation I'm seeing in comments: The supplemental benefits were part of a temporary program with a defined end date. The notices were sent out in March 2025 to all recipients. If you didn't receive one, it could be due to an outdated address in the system. Make sure your contact information is current in CalSAWS. Your regular CalFresh benefits are not affected by this change. If you're experiencing hardship, you might qualify for an emergency allotment by contacting your county office and explaining your situation. They can sometimes issue emergency benefits in cases of demonstrated need.

•Thanks for the clarification! My address is definitely current in the system (just got other mail from them last week). I must have missed that specific notice or maybe it got lost in the mail. I'll check about the emergency allotment option.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else here - really bummed about losing that extra payment! For those asking about getting help right now, I wanted to mention that many local food banks have increased their distributions recently because they know people are dealing with this benefit reduction. The LA Regional Food Bank has several locations doing extra weekend distributions through the end of May. Also, if you have kids, check if your school district is doing any spring break meal programs - some are extending them because of the CalFresh changes. It's not much but every little bit helps when you're trying to stretch that grocery budget!
