Ask the community...
This is such an important conversation! I'm really grateful everyone shared their experiences because I almost made the same mistake last weekend. I was at a Del Taco and saw they had an EBT sign, but after reading all these comments, I realized my regular CalFresh card wouldn't work there since I don't qualify for RMP. It's honestly a relief to know this ahead of time rather than finding out the hard way at the register. What really strikes me is how many of us have had similar experiences - it seems like this confusion happens ALL the time. Maybe we could put together some kind of simple guide or infographic that explains the difference between regular CalFresh and RMP? Something that could be shared in communities like this to help newcomers understand what to expect. The current system of learning through trial and error (and public embarrassment) really isn't working for anyone. Has anyone tried reaching out to their county office to suggest better communication about these program differences? I'm thinking maybe if enough of us request clearer information, they might actually improve how they explain things to new applicants.
That's a really great idea about creating a simple guide! I'm also pretty new here and this whole thread has been a lifesaver. I was literally about to try using my EBT at a McDonald's tomorrow, but now I know it won't work since I'm just on regular CalFresh. Your suggestion about reaching out to county offices is spot on. I wonder if we could even work together as a community to draft something and then each contact our respective counties? Like a unified effort to push for clearer communication. It's honestly ridiculous that so many of us have to learn about these important program differences through embarrassing trial and error. I'd definitely be willing to help put together that kind of informational resource if others are interested. Even just a one-page "CalFresh vs RMP Quick Guide" could save so many people from the awkward decline situation we've all been through!
I love the idea of creating a community guide! Count me in for helping with that. I've been on CalFresh for about a year now and wish I'd had this kind of clear explanation from the beginning. One thing that might be helpful to include in any guide we create is a simple flowchart - like "Are you 60+, disabled, homeless, or spouse of eligible person? YES → You may qualify for RMP, contact your county office. NO → EBT works for groceries only, not restaurants." Also, maybe we could include a list of participating counties and some examples of restaurants that accept RMP? I know @NebulaKnight mentioned the county list earlier, and @Oliver Alexander brought up gas stations too. Having all that info in one place would be super valuable. The embarrassment factor is so real - I think a lot of people just assume their card is broken or they did something wrong rather than understanding it's a program limitation. If we can save even a few people from that awkward moment at the register, it would be totally worth the effort to put this together!
I'm totally on board with this community guide idea! As someone who's been lurking here for a while but just joined the conversation, I can see how much confusion this causes for new CalFresh recipients. The flowchart approach sounds perfect - simple and direct. Maybe we could also include some tips on how to discreetly check if a restaurant participates in RMP before getting in line? Like calling ahead or asking to speak with a manager rather than finding out at the register. And definitely agree on including that county list and restaurant examples. I'm wondering if we should also mention the process for getting enrolled in RMP if someone does qualify? From what @Amina Toure shared earlier, it sounds like even eligible people sometimes need to specifically request it. Having step-by-step instructions could be really helpful. This thread has already been so educational - imagine how many people we could help with a well-organized guide! I'd be happy to help with research or writing if we can get this community project started.
I'm also new to this community and unfortunately dealing with a similar nightmare - just got hit with a CalFresh overpayment claim from 2016 for $2,100! Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly validating but also really infuriating. It's clear this is happening to tons of people right now, which makes me think there's definitely some kind of mass collection sweep going on. @Isaiah Sanders, a 10-year-old claim is absolutely outrageous - I can't believe they can legally do that! Following all the advice here, I immediately called and requested all their documentation, proof of collection attempts, and an administrative hearing form. The worker seemed genuinely surprised that I knew to ask for these things, which tells me most people probably just pay without knowing their rights. What really gets me is that I've been getting other county notices just fine at my current address, but they claim they couldn't reach me about this overpayment for 8 years? That doesn't add up at all. Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge and experiences - without this community I would have just panicked and set up a payment plan without understanding my options!
Welcome to the community! I'm also new here and it's honestly shocking to see how many people are suddenly dealing with these ancient overpayment claims. Your experience with the worker being surprised that you knew what to ask for really highlights the problem - they're clearly counting on people not knowing their rights. The fact that you've been receiving other county notices just fine but they claim they couldn't reach you about this for 8 years is a huge red flag that could really help your case. That's exactly the kind of procedural failure that @Aidan Percy and others have mentioned can get these claims dismissed. Make sure to document that discrepancy when you request your hearing! It s'so important that communities like this exist to share information because otherwise we d'all be navigating this nightmare alone. @Isaiah Sanders I m also'following your case - your situation really opened my eyes to how far back they can reach. Keep fighting everyone!
I'm new to this community and unfortunately just received my own CalFresh overpayment notice from 2018 for $1,375. Reading through all these experiences has been both terrifying and incredibly helpful - I had no idea these old claims were hitting so many people right now! @Isaiah Sanders, I'm so sorry you're dealing with a 10-year-old claim - that's absolutely insane and really shows how broken this system is. Following everyone's advice here, I'm going to request all their documentation before doing anything else. Like many others mentioned, I've also moved twice since 2018 but have been receiving other government mail just fine at my current address, so I'm very suspicious about their claim that they've been trying to contact me. The advice about certified mail, requesting proof of collection attempts, and asking about financial hardship waivers has been invaluable. It's so frustrating that we have to become legal experts just to defend ourselves from claims that should have been handled years ago, but at least we have this community to share knowledge and support each other. Thank you all for being so generous with your experiences - it's making me feel much more confident about fighting this instead of just panicking and agreeing to pay!
Welcome to the community! I'm also new here and just joined after getting slammed with my own ancient CalFresh overpayment notice - mine is from 2019 for $980. It's both reassuring and infuriating to see how many of us are going through this exact same situation right now. The pattern is so clear when you read through all these experiences - people getting hit with claims from 6-10 years ago, all around the same time, with counties claiming they "couldn't reach" us despite us receiving other mail just fine. @Isaiah Sanders your 10-year case really highlights how ridiculous this whole situation is. @Kaylee Cook you re absolutely'right about having to become legal experts to defend ourselves - it shouldn t be'this hard! I m definitely'following all the advice here about requesting documentation and proof of collection attempts before agreeing to anything. This community has been a lifesaver for understanding our rights and options. Let s all'keep each other posted on how our cases progress - strength in numbers!
To answer your follow-up question: Yes, there is a list of authorized online retailers for CalFresh EBT. Currently in California, you can use your EBT card online at Amazon, Walmart, Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Instacart (for certain stores), and ALDI. The USDA periodically adds new retailers to the program. You can check the official list on the GetCalFresh.org website or the California Department of Social Services site. Remember though, delivery fees cannot be paid with EBT - you'll need another payment method for those charges.
Thank you so much! This is super helpful. I'll check out those online grocery options instead. Appreciate everyone's responses!
Just wanted to add that if you're looking for quick meal options that work with CalFresh, you might want to check out the prepared food sections at grocery stores like Walmart, Target, or Safeway. They often have rotisserie chickens, pre-made salads, and other ready-to-eat items that ARE eligible for EBT purchase since they're sold in the grocery section, not a restaurant. It's not the same as online fast food ordering, but it could be a good middle ground for those busy nights when you need something quick but don't have time to cook from scratch!
That's a great suggestion! I never thought about the prepared foods at grocery stores. Do you know if things like the hot food bars at Whole Foods or those rotisserie chickens at Costco would work with EBT? I have a Costco membership and that could be perfect for grabbing something quick after work.
As someone who just went through the CalFresh application process myself a few weeks ago, I can totally relate to that anxiety about potentially messing something up! Reading through this entire thread has been so reassuring - it's clear that situations like duplicate cards are really common and nothing to stress about. What I find most helpful is seeing how systematically everyone approaches these issues: check the dates, verify which card is active, contact the right people if needed, and dispose of inactive cards properly. It's exactly the kind of step-by-step guidance that makes navigating CalFresh feel much less overwhelming. I'm still pretty new to all this myself, but one thing I've learned from this community is that the CalFresh system has a lot of built-in protections and safeguards. When they issue a replacement card, the old one automatically gets deactivated - it's designed to prevent exactly the kind of confusion you experienced. Thanks for sharing your experience and for all the follow-up questions you asked! Your thread has basically become a masterclass in handling EBT card issues, and I'm sure it's going to help so many other newcomers who find themselves in similar situations.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who jumped in to help with advice! As someone who's been on CalFresh for about 8 months now, I've definitely had my share of confusing moments with the system, but this community always comes through with practical solutions. Your situation is so relatable - I remember getting my first replacement card and being terrified I was going to accidentally commit fraud or mess up my benefits somehow. But like everyone said, the duplicate card thing happens ALL the time. The system is actually pretty good at protecting against issues like this. One thing I learned from experience that might help other newcomers reading this: if you're ever unsure about ANYTHING related to your benefits - weird balances, card issues, eligibility questions - don't hesitate to reach out either here or to the customer service line. I used to worry that asking "too many questions" would somehow flag my account, but that's not how it works at all. The workers actually prefer when people ask questions rather than making assumptions. It sounds like you've got everything sorted out now with the date checking and balance verification. Welcome to the CalFresh community - you're going to do great!

I'm new to CalFresh and this thread is so helpful! I just got approved last week and my benefits are supposed to load on the 8th (my case number ends in 8). Reading about the potential delays and the ConnectEBT app alerts makes me feel more prepared. It's reassuring to see that delays happen sometimes but usually resolve within a day. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is amazing for newcomers like me!

•Welcome to the CalFresh community, Gemma! You're absolutely right - this group has been such a lifesaver for me too when I first started. The fact that you're already getting prepared with the ConnectEBT app shows you're ahead of the game. Don't hesitate to ask questions here - everyone is really supportive and helpful. Good luck with your first benefit deposit on the 8th!

•@Gemma Andrews Welcome to CalFresh! Just wanted to add that if you ever run into issues, don t'be afraid to reach out here. I ve'been receiving benefits for about a year now and this community helped me navigate so many confusing situations. The ConnectEBT app that @Arjun Patel mentioned is definitely a game changer - I wish I had known about it sooner! Also, keep all your paperwork organized from day one, it ll save'you headaches later. Hope your first deposit goes smoothly on the 8th!

I'm dealing with this right now, also the phone automated system didn't have any pending balance for me but Propel did and I checked with my county last week to make sure they said I was ok and active. It's a Sunday so I can't call today

•@Nick Phillips That s'frustrating having different info between the automated system and Propel! I ve'noticed sometimes there s'a lag between the different systems updating. Since your county confirmed you re'active last week, it s'probably just a system delay like what happened to the original poster. Their benefits showed up at 6:30am, so hopefully yours will appear soon too. The fact that Propel shows a pending balance is actually a good sign - it means the benefits are in the system, just not fully processed yet. Definitely call tomorrow if they don t'show up by morning though!
