Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! I checked my approval letter and my case number does end in 7, which matches up with when I've been getting my benefits. I'll mark the 7th on my calendar each month so I can plan better. This community is so helpful! 😊
Just wanted to add that you can also set up text alerts through your county's EBT system! I get a notification the night before my benefits are deposited, which really helps with meal planning. You can usually sign up for these alerts by calling the customer service number on the back of your EBT card or through your county's online portal. It sends you a message saying something like "Your CalFresh benefits will be available tomorrow" so there's no more guessing or checking your balance at midnight. Really takes the stress out of budgeting when you have that confirmation!
This is such a great tip! I had no idea you could set up text alerts for benefit deposits. I'm definitely going to call the number on my card tomorrow to sign up for this. Having that confirmation the night before would be so much less stressful than wondering if today's the day. Thanks for sharing this - it's exactly the kind of practical advice that makes a real difference!
I'm new to CalFresh and just got approved too! Reading through all these responses is so helpful - I had no idea about the farmers market option giving you double the value. Quick question for everyone: does anyone know if the incentive program works at smaller independent grocery stores, or is it mainly just the big chains? There's a really nice family-owned produce market near me that accepts regular EBT, but I'm wondering if they'd have the fruit and vegetable incentive set up too. Also super grateful for the tip about Claimyr - I've been trying to reach my caseworker for weeks!
Welcome to the CalFresh community! For smaller independent stores, it really varies - some have implemented the incentive program and some haven't yet. Your best bet is to call the store directly and ask if they participate in the CalFresh Healthy Incentive Program or California Market Match. If they accept regular EBT, there's a good chance they might have it set up, but smaller stores sometimes take longer to get their systems updated. You could also ask your county office for their current list of participating retailers when you finally get through to them. And yes, definitely try Claimyr if you're still having trouble reaching your caseworker - it's been a lifesaver for so many people here!
Just wanted to add another tip that's been working great for me - if you have an Aldi near you, they participate in the program and their produce prices are already really low, so the $60 incentive goes even further there! I've been able to get almost two weeks worth of fruits and vegetables for my family of four using the full $60 benefit. Also, pro tip: download your store's app first - some places like Safeway show the CalFresh incentive discount right in the app after you link your card, so you can track how much of your monthly $60 you've used without having to keep all your receipts. The program really is worth it once you figure out how to use it properly!
Thanks for the Aldi tip! I didn't know they participated - there's one about 15 minutes from me so I'll definitely check it out. The app suggestion is really smart too. I've been keeping paper receipts in a shoebox trying to track my usage, which is such a mess. Do you know if the Walmart grocery app works the same way, or is it mainly just Safeway and the bigger chains that have that feature? I'm still figuring out which stores near me actually have their systems working properly for this program.
That's such great news! I'm so relieved you got it resolved quickly. The transition from expedited to regular benefits seems to be a common issue that trips up the system but nobody warns new recipients about it. It's frustrating that you had to go through the stress of not knowing what was wrong, especially with kids to feed. Definitely keeping Claimyr bookmarked for future reference - seems like it's a real lifesaver when the regular phone system fails us. Hope your benefits load smoothly from now on!
This is such a relief to read! I'm new to this community and CalFresh myself (just applied last week), so seeing posts like this makes me really nervous about what to expect. It's crazy that they don't warn people about these transition issues - seems like something they should mention when you first get approved. I'm definitely saving that Claimyr link for future reference just in case. Thanks for sharing your experience and I'm so glad your kids won't have to go hungry anymore!
This is exactly why I love this community - everyone jumps in to help when someone's struggling! @Chloe Taylor I'm so happy you got your benefits sorted out. The expedited-to-regular transition issue seems to happen more often than it should, and you're right that they really should warn people about potential delays during that switch. For anyone else reading this who might face similar issues, it sounds like Claimyr is definitely worth trying when the regular phone system isn't working. It's ridiculous that we have to use third-party services to get basic help, but if it gets people the assistance they need faster, I'm all for it. Thanks for updating us with the resolution - posts like this are so valuable for other families who might hit the same roadblock!
This whole thread has been so helpful to read as someone who just joined this community! I'm actually going through the application process right now and had no idea about these potential second-month transition issues. It's really reassuring to see how everyone came together to help @Chloe Taylor figure this out, and I m'definitely bookmarking that Claimyr service just in case. The fact that it was just a system flag that could be cleared in minutes but caused days of stress and worry really shows how broken the communication is in this system. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it makes navigating all this so much less scary when you know there are people who understand and want to help!
I'm so glad you called and got your account secured! This thread is really helpful - I had no idea about the 10-day rule for reporting stolen benefits or that you could set up transaction alerts. Going to download the ConnectEBT app right now. It's scary how these scammers are targeting people who need these benefits the most. Everyone should bookmark this thread as a reference for spotting these scams!
Absolutely agree! I'm new to CalFresh and this thread is super educational. Just downloaded the ConnectEBT app too and set up all the alerts. It's really disturbing that scammers are specifically targeting vulnerable people who depend on these benefits. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this could save a lot of people from losing their benefits to these criminals!
This is such an important thread! As someone who's been on CalFresh for a while, I want to add that scammers often get your name and know you have benefits from data breaches or even from seeing you use your EBT card at stores. Don't feel bad if they knew some of your info - that doesn't mean the call was legitimate. Another red flag: legitimate county workers will NEVER pressure you or create urgency ("your benefits will be canceled today unless..."). Government processes take time and they always give you written notice before making changes to your case. If anyone gets a suspicious call, write down the callback number they give you (if any) and report that to the fraud line too. Sometimes that helps investigators track down these scam operations.

I'm so sorry you're going through this - your situation is unfortunately becoming way too common and it's absolutely unacceptable! A $85 benefit reduction on a $72 income increase violates basic math, let alone the 30% rule that's supposed to govern CalFresh calculations. Based on everything shared in this thread, it sounds like there are widespread calculation errors happening, particularly around medical expense deductions and utility allowances. The fact that you have $350+ in monthly medical expenses that should be fully deductible makes me think that's where the error is. Here's what I'd recommend based on everyone's experiences: 1. Use that Claimyr service to actually get through to someone quickly 2. Ask for a complete written breakdown of your benefit calculation 3. Specifically verify they're applying your $350+ medical expense deduction correctly 4. Make sure you're getting the Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) if you pay for heating/cooling 5. If the numbers still don't make sense, request a fair hearing immediately Document everything and don't let them brush you off with "that's how it works" - clearly it's NOT working correctly for you and many others here. You deserve accurate calculations and enough food assistance to survive, especially when grocery prices have increased so dramatically this year. The system should be helping you, not punishing you for a tiny disability payment increase! Keep us posted on what you find out - your experience could help others facing similar calculation errors get their benefits corrected too.

•Thank you for laying out such a clear action plan! This is exactly the kind of step-by-step guidance I needed. You're absolutely right that my $350+ medical expenses should be making a huge difference in the calculation - I reported them months ago but now I'm wondering if they're actually being applied correctly. Your point about documenting everything really resonates with me. I've been so overwhelmed by this whole situation that I haven't been keeping good records, but I can see now how important that is for advocating for myself. I'm going to start a file with all my benefit notices, medical expense receipts, and notes from any calls I make. I'm feeling much more confident about calling tomorrow after reading everyone's experiences here. It's clear that "that's how it works" is NOT an acceptable answer when the math doesn't add up. I'll definitely ask for that written breakdown and push back if they can't explain the calculation properly. This community has been incredible - you've all given me the tools and confidence I need to fight this. I'll update everyone on what I find out, and hopefully my experience can help others too. Thank you for reminding me that I deserve accurate calculations and enough food assistance to actually live!

I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation and it's beyond frustrating! My disability benefits went up $59 last month and they slashed my CalFresh by $78 - which makes absolutely no mathematical sense under the 30% rule everyone keeps mentioning. What really gets me is that I've been reporting my medical expenses (about $280/month) for over a year, but now I'm wondering if they're actually being counted correctly. Reading through all these experiences, it seems like medical expense deductions and utility allowances are where most of the calculation errors happen. The timing couldn't be worse either - grocery prices in my area have gone up so much that I'm spending about $40 more per week than I was last year just for the same basic items. A benefit reduction right now feels like being punished for getting a tiny cost-of-living adjustment that doesn't even come close to covering actual inflation. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service that @Hassan Khoury mentioned and ask for a detailed breakdown of my calculation. It's ridiculous that we have to become benefits experts just to get the correct amount of food assistance, but this thread has given me the knowledge and confidence to fight back. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - knowing I'm not alone in this makes such a difference!

•Welcome to the community, and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! Your situation with a $78 reduction on only a $59 income increase sounds just as mathematically impossible as what I'm facing. It's both validating and deeply troubling to see how widespread these calculation errors seem to be. Your point about the timing being terrible really hits home - I'm spending way more on groceries too, and these benefit cuts feel like we're being punished for tiny disability increases that barely keep up with inflation. The fact that you've been reporting $280/month in medical expenses for over a year but they might not be calculating them correctly is exactly what I'm worried about with my own case. I'm planning to call using Claimyr tomorrow morning too, so we should definitely compare notes on what we find out! From everything people have shared here, it sounds like getting that detailed calculation breakdown is key to catching these errors. The fact that @Hassan Khoury got $67 restored just by having them properly apply deductions gives me hope that we can get these mistakes fixed. It really shouldn t'take a whole community teaching us how to navigate their own system, but I m'grateful this thread exists. Let s'both push for those written breakdowns and not accept that "s'how it works when" the math clearly doesn t'work! I ll'update here with what I learn, and I hope you will too. We ve'got this!
