FAFSA e-signature not working - anyone else having this glitch?
I've been trying to complete my FAFSA for the past 3 days and keep hitting a wall with the e-signature part. When I click to sign electronically, the page just freezes or sometimes gives me a weird error code (ERR-4089). I've tried different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and even my phone but nothing works! This is so frustrating because my school's priority deadline is next week. Has anyone else experienced this issue recently? Any workarounds? I called the 1-800 number but gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes...

Same issue here! Been trying to e-sign for my daughter's application since Tuesday. The page keeps loading forever after I enter the FSA ID info. Called twice and got disconnected both times. The whole system seems glitchy since they updated to the FAFSA Simplification Act version.

•Did you try using a different device? I'm wondering if it's maybe my laptop that's the problem...

I ran into this last week when trying to submit my daughter's FAFSA. The e-signature page would load about 75% then freeze. What fixed it for me was clearing all my browser cache/cookies, then restarting my computer completely (not just restarting the browser). Also make sure your pop-up blocker is disabled for the studentaid.gov domain since the signature authentication sometimes opens in a separate window.

•Thanks! I'll try clearing my cache tonight. I didn't think about the pop-up blocker - that might be it!

•The SAI (Student Aid Index) score won't actually be calculated until after you successfully submit the FAFSA with signatures. But don't worry - the calculation itself is usually pretty quick once your application is fully processed.

I work in a college financial aid office and we've had LOTS of students reporting this exact issue this week. It seems to be related to the most recent update they pushed to the FAFSA system. A few things to try: 1. Clear cache/cookies as mentioned above 2. Try a completely different device (like a tablet if you've been using laptop) 3. Try during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) 4. Make sure your FSA ID isn't locked (check at fsaid.ed.gov) 5. Check that your name/DOB/SSN match EXACTLY what's on your Social Security card If none of these work, unfortunately you may need to request a paper signature page as a workaround, though that will delay your processing.

•This is super helpful, thank you. What's the process for requesting a paper signature page? I hope I don't have to go that route since my school's priority deadline is soon.

If you need to talk to an actual person at Federal Student Aid, try using Claimyr. I was stuck on hold forever too until someone recommended it. You go to claimyr.com and they basically hold your place in line and call you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of hold time. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•Oh I've never heard of this! That might be worth it if the cache clearing doesn't work. Have you used it yourself?

•Yeah I used it last week when I had an issue with my Parent PLUS loan application. Got a callback in about 40 minutes instead of waiting on hold for 2+ hours. The agent was able to manually push my application through when it got stuck in the system.

Just to add some technical context - the e-signature issue is primarily affecting Chrome and Edge browsers right now. The Federal Student Aid office is aware of the problem and working on a fix, but in the meantime, Firefox seems to work better for most users. If you absolutely cannot get the e-signature to work and have an upcoming deadline, you can: 1. Print and mail the signature page (allows processing to begin while mail is in transit) 2. Ask your school's financial aid office if they can accept a screenshot of the error as proof you attempted to file on time 3. Contact the Federal Student Aid office directly (yes, it's a wait, but they can often override the system) Remember that even with signature issues, your FAFSA is timestamped when you begin the submission process, not just when signatures are complete.

•This is reassuring - thank you! I'm going to try Firefox right now and if that doesn't work, I'll call my financial aid office tomorrow to see if they can accept proof of my attempts.

UPDATE: Firefox worked!!! I finally got the e-signature page to load completely and was able to sign. For anyone else having this issue - try Firefox, disable pop-up blockers, and clear your cache first. Thanks everyone for the help!

•Great news! Glad it worked for you. This seems to be a common solution for many of the FAFSA glitches this year.

Just wanted to share that I also got mine to work! I ended up having to call FSA directly (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above to avoid the long hold) and they helped me troubleshoot. Turns out my account was partially locked because I had too many failed login attempts. They reset something on their end and then Firefox + clearing cache worked for me too!
