FAFSA 'Sign and Submit' button loops endlessly after maintenance - emails say submitted but studentaid.gov shows incomplete
Has anyone else run into this weird glitch after the system maintenance last weekend? Every time I try to finalize my FAFSA in the 'Sign and Complete' section, I click 'submit' and it just spins for like 1 second then shows me the submit button AGAIN! I've tried this like 15 times over the past two days. The really confusing part is I keep getting confirmation emails saying 'Your FAFSA has been submitted successfully' but when I check my actual account on studentaid.gov, it clearly shows my application is NOT complete. I'm starting to panic because my school's priority deadline is coming up soon. I've tried different browsers, cleared cookies, even used my roommate's laptop. Nothing works! Is it just me or did this maintenance break something? Anyone found a fix?

Yep, happening to me too! Been trying since Tuesday and keep getting those fake 'success' emails while nothing actually submits. Called the helpline yesterday and sat on hold for 45 MINUTES before getting disconnected. This is ridiculous - they break their own system then make it impossible to get help fixing it. Classic government incompetence. 🙄

•OMG thank you for confirming I'm not going crazy! Did you try restarting the whole application? I'm worried if I do that I'll lose all my information...

This is a known issue affecting applications that were in progress during the maintenance window. The system is sending confirmation emails prematurely, but the actual submission isn't completing in the database. Here's what you need to do: 1. Take screenshots of your current application (just in case) 2. Log out completely from studentaid.gov 3. Clear your browser cache and cookies 4. Wait at least 30 minutes before logging back in 5. When you return, go directly to the 'Sign and Complete' section WITHOUT changing any information 6. Try submitting again, but only click ONCE and wait at least 2 full minutes If that doesn't work, you'll need to contact FSA directly. The regular phone lines are overwhelmed right now because of this issue.

•Thank you SO much for these detailed steps! I'll try this exact process tonight. Fingers crossed it works because I really don't want to start over from scratch.

I had this same issue after the maintenance!! I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach a live FSA agent without waiting forever on hold. They got me through to someone in about 15 minutes who manually pushed my application through on their end. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me this is happening because the system maintenance created a bug where applications get stuck in a "zombie state" - they appear submitted in the email system but not in the actual database. Super frustrating but at least there's a way to fix it!

•is that service legit? seems sketchy to pay just to talk to someone from fafsa... 🤔

•It's definitely legit - they just help you skip the phone queue. The agent I talked to confirmed they're seeing this exact issue with tons of applications right now because of the maintenance glitch. Way better than waiting 2+ hours on hold or missing my school's deadline!

I work in a college financial aid office, and we've had several students report this exact issue this week. The FSA has acknowledged the problem but hasn't provided an ETA for a fix. Some important things to note: - The email confirmations are being triggered erroneously - Your data IS saved in the system even though it's not showing as submitted - Schools cannot see or process these affected applications yet - If your school deadline is approaching, contact your financial aid office directly to explain the situation Most schools are aware of this issue and will make accommodations since it's a system-wide problem. Just make sure to document your attempts to submit (screenshots of errors, confirmation emails, etc).

•Thank you for this insider info! That makes me feel a lot better about my school's deadline. I'll reach out to my financial aid office tomorrow with my screenshots. Really appreciate knowing my data isn't completely lost!

•This is EXACTLY why I hate the FAFSA process!! Every year there's some new catastrophic system failure, and students pay the price. Will they extend all the deadlines to compensate for THEIR screwup? Probably not.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this frustrating issue! I had something similar happen with my daughter's FAFSA last week. What finally worked for us was completing the submission process very early in the morning (like 5:30 AM) when the system load was much lower. Also, it might help to check if your SAI calculation section is fully complete - sometimes there's a hidden validation error that prevents submission but doesn't show any error message. Double-check all your income sections and contributor information to make sure nothing has a yellow or red indicator next to it. Finally, if nothing else works, you might need to contact your school's financial aid office directly to ask for guidance. Many schools can provide temporary extensions for students affected by these system issues.

•I'll try the early morning approach tomorrow! I never thought about the system being less busy then. And good idea about checking for hidden validation errors - I'll go through all sections again to see if I missed something. Thanks!

•That's interesting - so maybe it's not just related to the maintenance but also happens with corrections! I wonder if they're going to fix it anytime soon.

UPDATE: It worked!!! I followed the advice from @profile1 exactly (logged out, cleared cache, waited 30 mins, then tried again without changing anything) and it FINALLY submitted properly! Now studentaid.gov shows my application as complete and I got a different confirmation email that looks more official than the previous ones. Thank you all so much for your help! For anyone else facing this issue, definitely try those steps before starting over.

•That's great news! Glad it worked for you. The FSA has now posted an official notice about this issue on their status page, so hopefully they'll have a permanent fix soon for everyone else still experiencing it.
