Worried about claiming all PFML extension weeks at once - did I mess up?

So I got approved for an extension on my Paid Family Medical Leave claim (yay finally!). When I logged into my account, the system allowed me to file claims for all 5 weeks of my extension period at the same time. I went ahead and did it since the option was there, but now I'm second-guessing myself. Was I supposed to claim each week separately? The system seemed to let me do them all at once, but I'm worried I might have messed something up and they'll deny the payment or make me resubmit everything. Has anyone else done this with PFML extensions? Is claiming multiple weeks at once normal or did I make a mistake?

You're fine! PFML is different from regular unemployment. With Paid Family Medical Leave extensions, you can absolutely claim multiple weeks at once if the system allows it. I did the same thing with my 6-week extension last year. As long as all those weeks were part of your approved extension period, you should receive payment for all of them at once (usually within 5-7 business days).

Oh thank goodness! I was really stressing about this. Do you happen to know if they'll deposit the full amount all at once? It's a pretty substantial sum so I wasn't sure if they'd split it up or something.

I just went thru this in January!!! The system is SOOO confusing but ya your good. they let u claim all past weeks on PFML. not like regular UI where u gotta do it week by week. took me like 2 weeks to get my money tho fyi

Thanks for letting me know! Did they put any holds on your payment or ask for additional documentation since it was multiple weeks?

There's actually a lot of confusion about this because PFML and UI are administered differently even though they're both through ESD. With PFML, retroactive claiming is allowed - so you can claim several weeks at once after they've passed. With UI, you must claim each week individually and on time. So you definitely did the right thing by claiming all the approved extension weeks at once. You'll likely get one lump sum payment for all 5 weeks. It typically takes 5-10 business days to process, but could be longer if there's a high volume of claims currently.

That makes sense! Thanks for the clear explanation. I'm feeling much better now.

Wait, hold up - are you talking about Paid Family Medical Leave or unemployment? Because those are totally different things! If you're on PFML, then yes you can claim multiple weeks at once. But if you're confused and actually on regular UI, then no, you can't do that and need to file weekly. Just making sure because you mentioned "extension" which is usually a UI term, not PFML...

Sorry for the confusion! I'm definitely talking about Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML). I had an initial 12-week claim for a family health issue, and then I applied for and received a 5-week extension to continue care. I just got confused because the extension process felt similar to what I've heard about UI extensions from friends.

Ive been dealing with ESD for months now for my PFML claim and let me tell you their whole system is a nightmare!!! I claimed 4 weeks at once and then they put me in adjudication for 6 WEEKS saying I needed to verify something. Couldn't even get anyone on the phone. Just be ready to wait forever to actually see your money.

If you're having trouble reaching ESD by phone, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It helped me get through to an agent within 20 minutes after weeks of failed attempts. They basically hold your place in line and call you when they get an agent. Saved me so much frustration! You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and sign up at claimyr.com - definitely worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive claim issues.

I think youre confusing ppl here. PFML isnt the same as unemployment at all. You don't get "extensions" with PFML unless you mean you got additional weeks approved beyond your initial certification. And yes with PFML you can back-claim weeks all at once, totaly normal. dont stress

Yes, that's exactly what I meant! I had my doctor submit additional certification for more weeks beyond my initial approved period. Sorry for the terminology confusion.

One thing to be aware of: make sure you've properly documented all the weeks you're claiming. Sometimes when people claim multiple PFML weeks at once, ESD might request additional verification like medical provider notes to confirm you were still eligible during that entire period. Just have those documents ready in case they ask.

That's really helpful - thank you! I do have all the medical documentation from my family member's doctor for the full extension period. I'll keep it ready just in case they request it.

To summarize for anyone else who might be confused about this issue in the future: 1. PFML (Paid Family Medical Leave) allows retroactive claiming of multiple weeks at once 2. Regular UI (Unemployment Insurance) requires weekly claims filed on time 3. When claiming multiple PFML weeks, payment typically comes as one lump sum 4. Processing time is usually 5-10 business days but can take longer 5. Keep all your medical documentation handy in case verification is requested Hope this helps clarify things!
