Will my Social Security reduce my ESD weekly benefit amount? Just got laid off
I'm 63 and was working part-time at a medical office until they downsized yesterday. I've been receiving Social Security benefits for about 2 years while working. Now I'm trying to figure out my unemployment situation. Does anyone know if my Social Security payments will reduce my weekly unemployment benefit amount from ESD? I worked enough hours to qualify for unemployment, but I'm worried they'll either deny me completely or drastically reduce my benefit because of the SS income. Has anyone dealt with this situation recently? I need to know before I submit my application because I don't want to mess anything up.

Social Security doesn't reduce your unemployment benefits in Washington state. The ESD doesn't count Social Security as deductible income when calculating your weekly benefit amount. Your WBA will be based on your wages from your base year, just like anyone else. However, be aware that your unemployment benefits ARE reportable to Social Security and could potentially affect your SS benefits depending on your age and earnings.

•Thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I was afraid I might not qualify at all. Do you know if I need to report my Social Security income somewhere on the application, or do they not even ask for that information?

Be careful!!!! When I got laid off 2 yrs ago they DID reduce my unemployment because of social security!!! I fought with them for 3 MONTHS over this and had to get my state rep involved to fix it. The adjudicator kept saying my SS was "pension income" which IS deductible but that's WRONG!!! Social Security is NOT a pension!!! Make sure they process it correctly!!!

•That adjudicator was definitely wrong. Social Security retirement benefits are NOT considered pension income for Washington unemployment purposes. It sounds like you had a case of misinformation from an ESD agent, which unfortunately happens. For anyone reading this: per Washington state law, Social Security benefits should not reduce your unemployment benefits. If an adjudicator tries to reduce your benefits for this reason, request a formal determination that you can appeal.

I was in this exact situation last year. Social Security doesn't affect your unemployment benefits in Washington, but just FYI - your unemployment benefits DO count as income for Social Security purposes if you're under full retirement age (which is 67 for most people now). So if you're taking early SS benefits, you might hit the earnings limit and have some SS benefits withheld. Also, when I tried calling ESD to double-check this, I couldn't get through for days. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at ESD in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Way better than the endless busy signals and hangups I was getting before. The agent confirmed that my SS didn't affect my WBA calculation.

•Thank you for mentioning the earnings limit issue - that's something I'll need to look into. I'm taking SS before full retirement age, so I'll have to check on that. And thanks for the tip about Claimyr - I've been trying to get through on the phone with no luck!

the real question is whether ur unemployment benefits will affect your social security not the other way around lol. if ur under full retirement age and making too much money from work + unemployment, they might reduce ur SS. happened to my uncle

•Yes, exactly what I was trying to explain above. The annual earnings limit for 2025 is around $22,150 if you're under full retirement age, and unemployment benefits count toward that limit. So it's not that Social Security reduces unemployment, but unemployment can reduce Social Security if you're collecting early benefits.

When i applied last year they asked about pension but not about SS i think. But the form changes sometimes so cant be 100% sure what youll see. Just answer everything honestly and youll be fine.

To add some clarification here: Washington state law specifically doesn't count Social Security benefits as deductible income for unemployment purposes. Other states might, but not Washington. The common confusion happens when: 1. Some adjudicators mistakenly categorize Social Security as pension income (it's not, for UI purposes) 2. People confuse the Social Security earnings test (which counts unemployment as income) with ESD's benefit calculation (which doesn't count SS as income) If you're filing a new claim, make sure to answer all questions accurately. If they ask about "retirement, pension or disability payments," Social Security should be listed, but it won't reduce your benefits. If your WBA calculation comes back reduced because of SS, immediately request a formal determination that you can appeal.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I'll make sure to list my Social Security if asked, but now I know not to panic if they request that information. And I'll watch carefully to make sure they don't incorrectly reduce my benefits.

did u work enough hours to qualify for unemployment??? thats the real question!!!

•Yes, I definitely worked enough hours in my base year to qualify. I was working 25-30 hours per week consistently for the last two years at the medical office before they downsized. That's not what I'm worried about - it was specifically how the Social Security might impact the benefit amount.

Just to summarize what everyone's been saying: 1. Your Social Security won't reduce your ESD unemployment benefits (regardless of what some confused adjudicators might think) 2. Your unemployment benefits might affect your Social Security if you're under full retirement age and exceed the annual earnings limit 3. Answer all application questions honestly - if they ask about retirement income, list your Social Security 4. If they incorrectly reduce your WBA because of Social Security, appeal immediately Hope this helps, and good luck with your claim!
