Why would Washington ESD call me about my unemployment claim?
Got a voicemail from Washington ESD saying they need to speak with me about my claim. The message was pretty vague - just said to call them back with my claim number. My claim has been going fine, getting paid every week for the past 2 months. Should I be worried? What are the main reasons they would call you out of the blue like this?

There are several reasons Washington ESD might call. Most common ones are: identity verification, work separation issues they need to clarify, or someone reported you're working while collecting benefits. Could also be a routine quality review or they need additional documentation for something.

•I haven't been working at all, so that's not it. Maybe it's about my separation? I was laid off but there might have been some confusion about the circumstances.

•Yeah definitely call them back. Better to deal with it proactively than have your benefits suddenly stop.

I got called once because my former employer contested my claim. They said I was fired for misconduct but I was actually laid off due to budget cuts. Had to provide documentation to prove my side of the story.

•Oh no, that could be it. My manager wasn't happy when I was let go. How long did it take to resolve?

•Took about 3 weeks but I kept getting paid while they investigated. Just make sure you have any emails or documentation from when you were let go.

Good luck getting through to them though. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for 2 weeks about my adjudication issue and can't get past the busy signal. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. That's the only time I've ever gotten through.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that calls for you and gets you connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to get through.

•Never heard of that but honestly I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

They called me about a wage verification issue. Apparently one of my previous employers reported different wages than what I put on my application. Nothing major but they needed to confirm the correct amounts.

•That could be it too. I worked at a few different places last year and some of the wage info might be off.

•Wage issues are pretty common. Washington ESD cross-checks everything with employer records so any discrepancies need to be cleared up.

Sometimes they call for random audits too. They'll want to verify you're still eligible, still looking for work, etc. It's not necessarily because you did anything wrong.

•That's reassuring. I've been doing my job searches and keeping my log updated so I should be fine on that front.

•Yeah I got audited after like 6 months of benefits. They just wanted to see my job search log and verify I was still available for work. No big deal.

The Washington ESD phone system is a nightmare. I spent literally 6 hours on hold last month just to talk to someone for 5 minutes. They really need to fix their infrastructure.

•Tell me about it. I've started just assuming I won't get through and planning my whole day around calling them repeatedly.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. It automatically redials and waits on hold for you, then calls you back when an agent picks up. Worth every penny to not waste my whole day on the phone.

•How much does something like that cost? Sounds too good to be true.

•It's really reasonable actually. Way cheaper than taking time off work to sit on hold all day. Plus they know exactly which Washington ESD numbers to call for different issues.

I'm paranoid they're going to say I owe money back or something. The whole unemployment system makes me so anxious.

•Try not to stress too much. Most of the time when they call it's just routine stuff that gets cleared up quickly.

•Yeah I'm trying not to panic but it's hard when you're already stressed about finding work.

Could be about your work search requirements too. Sometimes they randomly check to make sure you're actually applying for jobs and not just going through the motions.

•I've been applying to 3 jobs per week like required and keeping detailed records. Hopefully that's enough if that's what this is about.

•3 per week is the minimum but they like to see quality applications, not just random submissions. Make sure your job search log shows relevant positions.

The fact that they left a voicemail is actually good - means it's probably not urgent or they would have kept calling. Still call back ASAP though.

•Good point. I'm going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning. Wish me luck getting through.

•Seriously consider that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. I used it last week and got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know I finally got through to Washington ESD. Turns out it was just a routine verification call about my job separation. They needed to confirm a few details but everything was fine. Thanks for all the advice!

•Glad it worked out! How long did it take you to get through?

•I actually ended up using Claimyr after reading about it here. Got connected in about 15 minutes and the whole call with the agent only took 10 minutes. Definitely worth it to avoid the stress of calling all day.

•That's awesome! Good to know it wasn't anything serious. I've been worried about getting one of those calls myself.
