Why is my Washington ESD unemployment on hold - need answers
My unemployment claim has been on hold for over two weeks now and I have no idea what's going on. When I log into my Washington ESD account it just shows 'claim under review' but doesn't explain anything. I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but haven't received any payments. Has anyone else had their claim put on hold randomly? I'm starting to panic because I need these benefits to pay rent.

Same thing happened to me last month. Usually means they're doing some kind of verification or adjudication process. Could be anything from checking your work history to reviewing your reason for separation from your last job.

•Did they send you any letters or notifications? I haven't gotten anything in the mail or in my online account.

•Sometimes they send stuff but it takes forever. Check your correspondence section in your online account every day.

There's usually a specific reason for holds. Common ones are: identity verification issues, job separation disputes, work search requirements not being met, or if your former employer contested your claim. You really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to find out exactly what's causing the hold.

•I've been trying to call but can never get through! The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. My cousin used it when her claim was stuck in adjudication and she actually got to talk to someone within a day. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Is it legit?

ugh the washington esd system is so broken. my claim was on hold for 6 weeks before they finally told me it was because my former employer said i quit instead of being laid off. had to appeal and everything

Diego Fisher
•Six weeks?! How did you survive that long without payments?

•borrowed money from family and sold some stuff. it was terrible. but i eventually got all my back pay once the appeal went through

Check if you missed any required appointments or didn't complete your WorkSource registration. They'll put your claim on hold if you're not meeting the work search requirements or if there's an issue with your eligibility determination.

•I registered with WorkSource and I've been doing my job searches. I log everything in the system like they require.

•Good. Sometimes it's just a routine review then. But you definitely need to find out the specific reason to know how to address it.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with Washington ESD! They put your life on hold and don't even tell you why. It's like they want you to give up and stop claiming benefits.

•I hear you but getting angry doesn't help. The system is overwhelmed and understaffed. You just have to be persistent.

•Easy for you to say when you're not the one waiting weeks for money you're entitled to!

For what it's worth, most holds do get resolved eventually. The key is finding out what documentation or action they need from you. Sometimes it's as simple as uploading a document or confirming information.

•How do I find out what they need if I can't reach anyone by phone?

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep who explained my hold was due to a routine quality review. Took 5 minutes to resolve once I actually talked to someone.

•Really? I'm going to look into that service right now.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while on hold. If you don't, you could lose benefits for those weeks even after the hold is lifted.

Diego Fisher
•I've been doing that but it feels pointless when nothing is getting paid out.

•Trust me, keep doing it. When they lift the hold you'll get all the back payments at once if you kept filing.

Document everything - when the hold started, what your account shows, any communications you've tried to make. If this drags on you might need to contact your state representative for help.

•Good idea. I'll start keeping a log of everything.

•Also screenshot your account pages in case something changes or gets lost in their system.

Is this your first time claiming unemployment in Washington? Sometimes new claimants get flagged for additional verification.

Diego Fisher
•No, I claimed benefits about 3 years ago without any problems. This is so frustrating.

•Weird. Must be something specific to your current claim then. Definitely try to get through to someone.

my friend had the same thing happen and it turned out her former employer filed a protest claiming she was fired for misconduct. took forever to sort out but she eventually won the appeal

•How would I know if my employer filed a protest?

•they should send you notice but sometimes mail gets delayed or lost. another reason to try calling

The waiting is the worst part. I was on hold for 3 weeks and it turned out to be a computer glitch. They fixed it in 5 minutes once I got someone on the phone.

Diego Fisher
•A computer glitch cost you 3 weeks of benefits? That's insane.

Mason Davis
•Yeah but I got all the back pay. Still, those 3 weeks were hell financially.

Try calling first thing in the morning right when they open. That's usually the best time to get through.

•I've tried that multiple times. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after hours of waiting.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. They handle the calling frustration for you and get you connected to an actual person who can explain what's going on with your hold.

Whatever you do, don't give up. I know people who stopped filing because they got frustrated with holds and they lost weeks of benefits they could have gotten.

Diego Fisher
•I won't give up but this is really stressing me out. Bills don't stop coming just because Washington ESD puts your claim on hold.

•I totally understand. Hang in there and keep pushing to find out what the issue is.

Check if there are any pending issues in your account that need your attention. Sometimes they flag something but don't make it obvious what you need to do.

•I've looked everywhere in my online account and don't see anything that needs action from me.

•Then it's probably something on their end that requires talking to a rep to resolve.

Same boat here. Been on hold for 10 days with no explanation. This system is a joke.

•At least I'm not alone in this mess. Have you tried calling?

•countless times. thinking about trying that claimyr thing people mentioned

One thing that helped me was sending a message through the secure messaging system in my account. Sometimes they respond faster that way than answering phones.
0 coins
Diego Fisher
•I'll try that too. How long did it take them to respond to your message?

Mila Walker
•took about a week but at least i got an actual answer about what was causing the delay

The hold could also be related to identity verification. They've been cracking down on fraud so they're reviewing more claims manually.

Diego Fisher
•I already did the ID.me verification when I first applied. Would they need more?
0 coins
Logan Scott
•Sometimes they do additional checks even after ID.me. It's frustrating but they're trying to prevent fraudulent claims.

Hope you get this sorted out soon. The uncertainty is almost worse than not having the money.

Diego Fisher
•Exactly! I just want to know what's going on so I can fix whatever the problem is.

•Seriously consider using Claimyr if you can't get through by calling. It was a lifesaver for me when my claim was stuck. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.
