Who is eligible for unemployment compensation through Washington ESD?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I worked part-time for about 8 months at a retail job before getting laid off last week. My hours were inconsistent - sometimes 15 hours a week, sometimes 30. I'm 19 and this was my first real job. I've been reading about Washington ESD requirements but I'm confused about the eligibility criteria. Do I need to have worked full-time? What about the wage requirements? Any help would be appreciated!

You don't need to work full-time to qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. The main requirements are: 1) You must have worked in Washington state during your base period (typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters), 2) You must have earned at least $1,000 in your base period, 3) You must have earned wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period, and 4) Your total base period wages must be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter wages. Since you worked 8 months, you likely meet these requirements.

Thanks! How do I know what my base period is exactly? I started working in March 2024.

If you file now in January 2025, your base period would be January 2024 through December 2024. Since you started in March, you'd have wages in quarters 1-4 of 2024, which should work in your favor.

Also make sure you were laid off through no fault of your own. If you quit or were fired for misconduct, you won't qualify. But layoffs due to lack of work are totally fine for Washington ESD benefits.

Yeah it was definitely a layoff - they cut several part-time positions due to slow business after the holidays.

That's perfect then. Make sure to file your claim as soon as possible since benefits don't start until you file.

I had a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD by phone for weeks to ask questions about my eligibility. The wait times were insane and I kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

Yeah, they handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Interesting, I might need to try that if I run into issues with my claim.

One thing to keep in mind - even if you're eligible, you still need to be able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. Washington ESD requires you to do job search activities and report them on your weekly claims. Don't slack on this part or you could get disqualified.

What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, WorkSourceWA workshops, even updating your resume can count. You need to do at least 3 activities per week usually.

ugh the whole washington esd system is so confusing. i applied last month and still waiting for my first payment. keep getting told my claim is under review but no one explains what that means

0 coins

That sounds like adjudication. It happens when they need to verify information about your claim - like confirming your separation reason or wages. It can take a few weeks unfortunately.

0 coins

yeah thats probably it. just wish they would tell you whats happening instead of leaving you in the dark

Age shouldn't matter for eligibility as long as you meet the work and wage requirements. I know people who got benefits at 18 and others who got them at 65. The system doesn't discriminate based on age.

Good to know! I was worried being young might count against me somehow.

Make sure you have all your documentation ready when you file - Social Security card, ID, employment records, etc. Washington ESD is pretty strict about having everything in order from the start.

What if I don't have all my pay stubs? I think I lost a few from earlier in the year.

You can usually get copies from your employer or check if they're available online through your old employer's payroll system. Washington ESD can also request wage information directly from employers.

The weekly benefit amount is based on your highest quarter wages. With part-time work, it might not be a huge amount, but every bit helps when you're unemployed. Don't let that discourage you from applying if you're eligible.

Yeah I'm not expecting much, but anything would help while I look for a new job.

Even if it's just $100-200 a week, that can cover groceries or gas money. Worth applying for sure.

JUST APPLY ALREADY! Sorry for yelling but I see so many people overthinking this. If you're not sure about eligibility, let Washington ESD make that determination. The worst they can say is no, but you might be surprised and qualify.

Haha you're right, I'm probably overthinking it. I'll file my claim tomorrow.

This is good advice. I almost didn't apply because I thought I wouldn't qualify, but ended up getting approved.

Another option if you can't reach Washington ESD directly is using Claimyr. I used them when I had questions about my claim status and they got me through to an agent the same day. Really saved me a lot of stress trying to call myself.

Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They just handle the calling part so you don't have to sit on hold. Check out their video demo if you want to see how it works.

One more thing - if you do get approved, make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. Missing even one week can mess up your whole claim and cause delays.

Good point. When do you usually file them?

I always file mine on Sunday mornings. The system is usually less busy then and it's easy to remember.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them later when you file your tax return.

Melina Haruko

•

Oh I didn't know that. Is it better to have them withheld or pay later?

0 coins

Dananyl Lear

•

I prefer to have them withheld so I don't owe a big chunk at tax time. But it's really personal preference.

0 coins

sounds like you should be fine to apply. retail layoffs are pretty common this time of year so washington esd sees a lot of these cases. just make sure you're honest about everything on your application

Definitely will be honest. Thanks everyone for all the help!

I had to use Claimyr twice last year when I had issues with my claim. Once for an adjudication question and once when my payments stopped randomly. Both times they got me through to someone who could actually help instead of just reading me the website info.

0 coins

That's exactly what I need. The automated system is useless when you have specific questions.

0 coins

Fidel Carson

•

Yeah, the agents they connect you with can actually look at your account and explain what's happening with your specific claim.

The system has gotten better over the years but it's still not perfect. Just be patient and persistent. Most people do get approved eventually if they're eligible.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm feeling more confident about applying now.
