How much do you have to work to get unemployment benefits in Washington State?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been working part-time for about 8 months at a retail job, averaging maybe 25-30 hours a week. Before that I had a full-time job for 6 months but got laid off. I'm confused about the work requirements - how much do you actually have to work to be eligible for UI benefits? I've heard different things from people and want to make sure I understand before I apply.

Washington ESD looks at your base period which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. You need to have earned wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period and meet minimum wage requirements. The exact amount depends on your total wages during that period.

•So it's not about how many hours you worked but how much you earned? That makes more sense.

For 2025, you need to have earned at least $7,500 in your base period OR earned at least $5,000 in your base period AND earned at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings in the other quarters. It's kind of confusing but Washington ESD's website has a calculator.

•Where's this calculator? I can't find it on their site.

•I think it's under the 'Am I Eligible' section but honestly their website is terrible to navigate

I had a similar situation last year and qualified even though I was only working part-time. The key is making sure you have enough wage credits. If you're not sure, just apply anyway - Washington ESD will tell you if you qualify or not.

•Did you have any issues with the application process? I've heard it can take forever to get approved.

•Mine took about 3 weeks but I didn't have any complications. Some people get stuck in adjudication for months though.

I was struggling with getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my eligibility and kept getting busy signals. Found this service called Claimyr that helped me actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you?

•They automate the calling process so you don't have to sit there hitting redial. Check out claimyr.com for more info.

ugh the whole system is so confusing. i worked full time for like 2 years then got fired and they're telling me i dont qualify because of some technicality about when i worked. makes no sense

•Did they give you a specific reason for the denial? Sometimes it's about the timing of when you file versus your base period.

•something about not having enough wages in the right quarters. i dont understand any of it honestly

The work requirements aren't just about total hours - it's about when you worked and how much you earned. Part-time workers can definitely qualify if they meet the wage requirements during their base period.

•This is really helpful. I think I should be okay since I've been working consistently for over a year now.

Just apply online through Washington ESD's website. Don't overthink it. If you don't qualify they'll tell you why and you can always appeal if you think they made a mistake.

•The appeal process is a nightmare though. Better to make sure you qualify first.

•True but sometimes the initial determination is wrong. I've seen people get approved on appeal who were denied initially.

I think the minimum is like $7,500 in your base period but I'm not 100% sure. The Washington ESD website has all the details but it's written in government speak that's hard to understand.

•Yeah that sounds right. I remember seeing that number somewhere too.

Don't forget about the work search requirements too. Even if you qualify, you'll need to be actively looking for work and documenting your job search activities. Washington ESD is pretty strict about that.

•How many jobs do you have to apply for each week?

Sofia Torres
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the current requirements. They changed some things recently.

I was in adjudication for 6 weeks because they couldn't verify my employment history. Ended up using Claimyr to get through to someone who could actually help resolve the issue. Would have been stuck forever otherwise.

•Six weeks?? That's insane. Did you eventually get all your back pay?

•Yeah once it was resolved I got everything backdated. But those 6 weeks were rough financially.

The base period thing is really important to understand. If you file too early after starting work, you might not have enough wages in your base period even if you would qualify later.

•So timing matters? I thought you could just apply whenever you become unemployed.

•You can apply anytime but your base period is fixed based on when you file. Sometimes waiting a few weeks can make a difference in your eligibility.

•50 times is nothing. I called over 100 times before giving up and just filing online.

If you're not sure about your wage history, you can request a wage statement from Washington ESD. That'll show you exactly what they have on file for your base period.

Yuki Sato
•How do you request that? Through their website?

Connor Gallagher
•Yeah there's a form you can submit online. Takes a few days to get it back but it's really helpful for figuring out if you qualify.

The Washington ESD system is so outdated. Half the time their website doesn't work and when you call you either get a busy signal or get disconnected. At least services like Claimyr make it easier to actually reach someone when you need help.

•Worked for me. Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

Bottom line - if you've been working consistently and earning decent wages, you probably qualify. The exact requirements are on Washington ESD's website but the key is having enough wage credits in your base period.
