Who can apply for unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about eligibility requirements
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment in Washington state but the Washington ESD website is confusing me. I worked part-time for 8 months at a retail job before getting laid off last week. My friend said I might not qualify because I wasn't full-time, but another coworker said part-time workers can get benefits too. Can someone explain who can actually apply for unemployment benefits? I don't want to waste time filing if I'm not eligible.

You can definitely apply even with part-time work! Washington ESD looks at your total earnings over the past 18 months, not whether you were full or part-time. The main requirements are: you must be unemployed through no fault of your own, able and available for work, actively seeking work, and have earned enough wages during your base period.

•Thanks! What's the base period exactly? And how much do I need to have earned?

Javier Morales
•The base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. You need at least $1,130 in your highest earning quarter and total base period wages of at least 1.5 times your high quarter amount.

Don't let anyone discourage you from applying! I worked two part-time jobs and qualified just fine. The key things Washington ESD looks for: you lost your job through no fault of your own (layoffs, business closure, lack of work), you're physically able to work, available for work, and actively looking. Even people who quit can sometimes qualify if they had good cause.

•What counts as 'good cause' for quitting? I'm thinking about leaving my current job because of harassment from my supervisor.

•Harassment, unsafe working conditions, significant changes to your job duties or pay, domestic violence situations - these can all be good cause. Document everything if you're dealing with harassment.

•That's helpful to know. In my case it was definitely a layoff so I should be good there.

Here's something that helped me when I was confused about eligibility - I used Claimyr to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about my specific situation. Way better than trying to figure it out from the website. You can check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their site is claimyr.com. Saved me hours of confusion.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already worried about money.

•It's worth it when you consider the time you save and getting accurate info for your situation. Much better than spending days trying to get through on the phone yourself.

•Did you have any issues with the seasonal work? I'm worried they might question my work history.

•nah they just wanted to see my wages from all the jobs. as long as you made enough money overall you should be fine

Just to add - you can't collect UI benefits if you're currently working full-time, but you might qualify for partial benefits if you're working reduced hours. Also, you need to be legally authorized to work in the US and have a valid Social Security number.

•What if I'm working part-time now but making way less than before? Can I still apply?

•Yes, that's called partial unemployment. Washington ESD has specific calculations for how much you can earn and still receive partial benefits.

I'm so stressed about this whole process. What if I apply and they say I don't qualify? Will that hurt me somehow? And what if I make a mistake on the application?

•There's no penalty for applying if you don't qualify - they'll just deny your claim. Better to try than assume you can't get benefits. And you can always correct mistakes later if needed.

•Okay that makes me feel better. I was worried they'd think I was trying to fraud the system or something.

•Don't worry about it! The worst thing that happens is they say no. I applied twice - first time I didn't qualify because I hadn't worked enough, second time I did after working more.

One thing people don't realize - even if you were fired, you might still qualify depending on the circumstances. Washington ESD looks at whether it was misconduct or just performance issues. I got fired for attendance problems due to my sick kid and still got benefits.

•Really? I always thought getting fired meant you couldn't get unemployment.

•Nope! As long as it wasn't willful misconduct, you can still qualify. They look at each situation individually.

For anyone struggling to get clear answers about their specific situation, seriously consider using a service like Claimyr. I wasted so much time trying to interpret the Washington ESD rules myself. One conversation with an actual ESD agent through their system cleared everything up.

•Did you try calling Washington ESD directly first?

•Of course! Spent hours on hold, got disconnected multiple times. Claimyr actually got me through to someone who could help.

The job search requirement is something to keep in mind too if you do qualify. You'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD is pretty strict about this.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online?

Diego Mendoza
•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events, even some training activities can count. They want to see you're actively looking.

•Don't forget about WorkSource too - they have resources and sometimes attending their workshops counts toward your job search requirement.

JUST APPLY! Seriously, stop overthinking it. The Washington ESD will tell you if you qualify or not. I spent weeks worrying about it when I should have just filed right away. You can always appeal if they make a mistake.

•You're right, I'm probably overthinking this. I'll file this weekend.

•Good plan! The sooner you file, the sooner you can start getting benefits if you qualify. There's usually a waiting week anyway.

One more thing - if you're on standby (temporarily laid off but expecting to return to work), you might be eligible for standby benefits. Different rules apply but still worth looking into if that's your situation.

Natasha Petrova
•My layoff is permanent as far as I know, so I don't think standby applies to me.

•Then regular UI is what you want. Standby is more for seasonal shutdowns and things like that.

I had a weird situation where I worked in multiple states before moving to Washington. Washington ESD was able to combine wages from other states to help me qualify. Don't assume you can't get benefits just because your work history is complicated.

•How did that work? Did you have to get records from the other states?

•Washington ESD handled most of it, but I did have to provide some documentation. It's called interstate benefits or something like that.

Bottom line eligibility checklist: Lost job through no fault of your own ✓ Earned enough wages in base period ✓ Able and available for work ✓ Actively seeking work ✓ Legal to work in US ✓ If you check all those boxes, you should qualify.

Natasha Petrova
•Perfect! I think I check all those boxes. Thanks for breaking it down so simply.

•Don't forget you also need to file weekly claims once you're approved and report any income you earn while collecting benefits!

If anyone's still confused about whether they qualify, honestly just call Washington ESD or use something like Claimyr to talk to an agent. I tried to figure it out myself for days and got more confused. One phone call cleared everything up and I was able to file that same day.

•Yeah I think I'm going to stop overthinking and just file. Worst case they say no and I'm back where I started.

•Exactly! And if they do say no, they'll tell you why so you know what you need to do differently next time.
