When does unemployment pay out from Washington ESD after approval?
Just got my claim approved by Washington ESD after 2 weeks in adjudication. My question is when does unemployment actually pay? I filed my first weekly claim yesterday and it shows as submitted but no payment info yet. Really need to know when I can expect the money to hit my account because rent is due next week. Anyone know the typical timeline from claim submission to actual payment?

Usually takes 2-3 business days after you submit your weekly claim for the payment to process. Washington ESD processes payments on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday typically. If you filed yesterday and it's showing as submitted, you should see payment by Thursday or Friday.

•That's a relief! I was worried it would take another week or something. So the money should be in my account by Friday?

•Should be, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Check your account Thursday evening to see if it's processed.

•There might be a verification issue with your claim. Have you checked your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there are any pending issues that need to be resolved?

I had this same issue last month and it turned out there was a problem with my bank account info. Had to call Washington ESD to get it sorted out. The phone lines are absolutely brutal though - I spent 4 hours trying to get through before I found Claimyr. They got me connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone: claimyr.com. They have a video that shows how it works too: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Never heard of Claimyr before. How does it work exactly? Do they charge a lot?

•They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected when an agent picks up. Pretty straightforward and saved me tons of time and frustration.

•Sounds too good to be true tbh. Why would I pay someone to make a phone call for me?

Payment timing depends on several factors: 1) When you submit your weekly claim 2) Whether there are any eligibility issues 3) Your bank's processing time. Washington ESD typically processes payments Tuesday through Thursday. If you submit Sunday-Tuesday, you'll usually get paid that same week. Submit Wednesday-Saturday and payment comes the following week.

•This is super helpful! I submitted on Sunday so sounds like I should get paid this week.

•wait I thought you had to file by Sunday? can you still file later in the week?

•You can file anytime during your filing week, but filing earlier in the week gets you paid faster. The deadline is usually Sunday of the following week.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! I've been waiting 2 weeks for my payment and every time I call they tell me something different. First it was a verification issue, then they said my claim was under review, now they're saying there's no problem and I should have been paid already. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!

•I feel your pain. The inconsistency with Washington ESD is maddening.

•It's like they just make stuff up on the spot. How hard is it to process a simple unemployment payment?

For what it's worth, I've found that payments usually hit my account around 2-3 AM on the day they're processed. So if Washington ESD processes on Wednesday, I see the money in my account Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

•Good to know! I'll check my account early Thursday morning then.

•Same here, always shows up super early in the morning when it does come through.

Anyone else notice payments have been slower lately? Used to get mine on Wednesday every week but now it's Thursday or Friday.

•Yes! I thought it was just me. Maybe they're processing more claims now?

•Could be staff shortages too. State agencies are having trouble hiring.

Just want to add that if you're on standby status, the payment timing might be different. I'm on standby and my payments come through on different days than regular UI claims.

•I'm on regular UI so hopefully the normal timeline applies to me.

•What's standby status? Never heard of that before.

•It's for people who are temporarily laid off but expect to return to work. Different rules than regular unemployment.

Pro tip: if your payment is delayed and you need to call Washington ESD, try calling right at 8 AM when they open. Lines are slightly less busy then. Still takes forever but better than calling at noon.

•I tried that and still waited 2 hours before giving up.

•That's when I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Definitely worth it if you actually need to talk to someone and don't have hours to waste on hold.

Quick question - do they send any notification when the payment is processed or do you just have to keep checking your account?

Mila Walker
•You should get an email notification when your weekly claim is processed, but not necessarily when the payment hits your bank account. That depends on your bank.

•Got it, thanks! I'll watch for the email then.

Been through this process multiple times unfortunately. In my experience, first-time payments sometimes take longer because they're doing extra verification. After that, it's usually pretty consistent timing each week.

•This is my first time filing so maybe that explains why I'm nervous about the timing.

Sophia Clark
•Totally understandable! The first payment is always the most stressful. After that you'll know what to expect.

One thing to watch out for - if there are any holidays during the week, it can delay payments by a day or two. Washington ESD doesn't process on federal holidays.

•Good point! I forgot about that. Presidents Day messed up my payment schedule last month.

•Yeah holidays always throw everything off. Plan accordingly if there's a holiday coming up.

Might be worth double-checking that your direct deposit info is correct in your Washington ESD account. I had a typo in my routing number that delayed my first payment by like a week.

I know everyone's situation is different but for me, once I got into the routine of filing Sunday mornings, I'd get paid every Wednesday like clockwork. Consistency seemed to help.

•That's smart. I should probably set a reminder to file the same day each week.

•Definitely helps reduce stress when you know what to expect!

Last thing - make sure you're completing your work search requirements if they apply to your claim type. Sometimes payments get held up if you're missing job search documentation.

•I've been logging my job searches in WorkSourceWA like they told me to. Hopefully that's enough.

•That should be fine. Just keep doing what you're doing with the job search log.
