When does unemployment kick in after filing - Washington ESD timing?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when does unemployment kick in? Like when do the actual payments start? I know there's a waiting week but I'm confused about the timeline. My job ended on the 15th and I filed right away. Should I expect anything this week or does it take longer? Really need to know so I can plan my bills.

The waiting week is served during your first week of unemployment, so you won't get paid for that week. After that, if your claim is approved without any issues, payments typically start 2-3 weeks after filing. You still need to file your weekly claims during this time though.

•So I should keep filing weekly claims even if I haven't been approved yet?

•Yes, absolutely. If you don't file your weekly claims you'll lose those weeks permanently, even if your claim gets approved later.

mine took forever to kick in because they had to verify my employment history, ended up being like 5 weeks before i saw any money

•Did you call them or just wait it out? I'm worried about bills piling up.

•tried calling but never got through, just had to wait

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I discovered Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you get connected to ESD agents without sitting on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth it if you need to check your claim status.

•Is that legit? Never heard of services like that before.

•Yeah it's real. I used it when my claim was stuck in adjudication and needed to talk to someone. Way better than trying to call yourself.

•Sounds too good to be true but desperate times I guess

The timeline depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to investigate anything about your job separation, it can take weeks longer. Simple claims with no issues usually process faster.

•How do I know if mine is in adjudication? My account just says 'claim under review

Grace Johnson
•That usually means adjudication. Check your correspondence section in your ESD account for any letters or requests for information.

THEY MAKE YOU WAIT FOREVER ON PURPOSE!!! I swear they hope you'll give up and find a job before they have to pay you anything. It's all about saving money for them.

•I mean, the system is definitely overwhelmed but I don't think it's intentional

•You're naive if you think they want to pay out benefits quickly. The longer they delay the less they pay overall.

just a heads up - even after your claim is approved, the first payment might take an extra few days to hit your account depending on your bank

•Good to know, thanks. I have Chase so hopefully it's not too slow.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week starting with your second week of benefits. Keep detailed records because they audit these regularly.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews. Check the WorkSource website for the full list.

•They're really strict about this now. My friend got disqualified for not having enough job searches documented.

Been waiting 3 weeks for my first payment and still nothing. Filed weekly claims every week and my account shows I'm eligible but no money yet. This is ridiculous.

•That's when I'd definitely use something like Claimyr to get through to an agent. Three weeks is too long if you're showing eligible.

•Yeah might have to try that. Can't keep waiting forever.

The waiting week thing is so stupid. Like we're not already struggling enough when we lose our jobs. Other states don't make you wait.

•It's to prevent fraud supposedly but yeah it sucks when you need money right away

My claim took 4 weeks to get approved but once it was, I got all the back pay including for the weeks I was waiting. So don't panic if it takes a while, you'll get the money eventually.

•That's reassuring. Did you get it all in one lump sum or separate payments?

•All at once, it was a nice chunk of change after waiting so long

anyone else notice their account balance keeps changing? mine shows different amounts every time i log in, super confusing

•That's normal while your claim is processing. The system updates as they verify information and calculate your benefit amount.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Debit card payments can take longer and the card fees are annoying.

•How do I switch from the debit card to direct deposit?

•Log into your ESD account and look for payment options. You can change it there.

I was laid off from Boeing in December and filed right away. First payment came exactly 3 weeks later with no issues. Guess it depends on your situation and how busy they are.

•Were you able to get through to anyone when you had questions or did you just wait?

•I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier when I had a question about my weekly claim. Worked pretty well actually.

Keep in mind your benefit amount might be different than what you calculated. They use a specific formula based on your highest earning quarter.

•Where can I see what my benefit amount will be?

Millie Long
•It should show in your account once your claim is processed. The monetary determination letter will have all the details.

this whole system is a joke, took 6 weeks to get approved and then they said i was overpaid and wanted money back, like make up your minds

For what it's worth, I got approved and my first payment in 2 weeks exactly. Filed on a Monday, got paid 2 weeks later on a Tuesday. Sometimes the system works like it should.

Don't forget you can check your payment status online. Your ESD account will show pending payments and when they're scheduled to be released.

•Mine just shows 'processing' for everything. Guess I'll keep waiting and checking.

•Same here. Processing seems to be the default status for everything these days.

If you need help immediately, most counties have emergency assistance programs while you wait for unemployment to kick in. Might be worth looking into.

•Good idea, I'll check what's available in King County. Thanks for the tip.
