When does unemployment benefits start after filing Washington ESD claim?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD three days ago and I'm wondering when does unemployment benefits start? My last day of work was February 3rd and I submitted everything online through SecureAccess Washington. Do benefits start from when I filed or from my last day of work? I'm getting conflicting information and really need to know when I can expect my first payment. Has anyone recently gone through this process?

Benefits typically start from the Sunday of the week you file your claim, not from your last day of work. So if you filed this week, your benefit year would start from last Sunday. You'll need to file your first weekly claim for that week to actually receive payment.

•Thanks! So even though I worked until February 3rd, the benefits don't backdate to then?

Yara Abboud
•Correct, Washington ESD doesn't automatically backdate. Your waiting week starts from when you establish the claim.

wait i thought there was a waiting week? doesn't that mean you don't get paid for the first week anyway

•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2020. You can get paid for your first eligible week now as long as you file your weekly claim on time.

•oh wow didn't know that changed, thanks for the update

I filed mine last month and it took forever to get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on my claim status. The phone lines are constantly busy and the online system doesn't always show current information. If you're having trouble reaching them, I discovered this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost though? I can't afford to pay for something like that when I'm already unemployed.

•It's way cheaper than losing weeks of benefits because you can't get answers. The peace of mind was worth it for me.

•Interesting, never heard of this before. Might be worth looking into if I can't get through the regular way.

The key thing to understand is that your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, but you won't receive payment until you complete your first weekly claim certification. Make sure you're logging into your SecureAccess Washington account every week to file your weekly claim. The first payment usually comes 2-3 business days after your weekly claim is processed, assuming there are no issues with your claim.

•So I need to wait until this Sunday to file my first weekly claim? Or can I file it now?

Keisha Williams
•You can only file weekly claims for complete weeks. If your benefit week started last Sunday, you should be able to file that claim now.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing!! why cant they just make it simple and tell you exactly when you'll get paid instead of all this waiting week benefit week nonsense

•I feel you! It's definitely not user-friendly. The terminology alone is confusing.

•exactly! like what even is the difference between filing date and effective date??

Yara Abboud
Just to clarify some terminology that might help: Your 'effective date' is when your benefit year begins (the Sunday of the week you filed). Your 'filing date' is the actual day you submitted your application. Payments are issued for weekly claim periods that run Sunday through Saturday. You file your weekly claim on Sunday or Monday for the previous week.

Connor Byrne
•This is really helpful, thank you! So if I filed Wednesday, my effective date would be the Sunday before that?
0 coins
Yara Abboud
•Exactly right. The effective date is always the Sunday at the start of that calendar week.

What if your claim goes into adjudication though? I've been waiting 3 weeks for mine to get approved and haven't received anything yet.

Keisha Williams
•If you're in adjudication, you won't receive payments until it's resolved, but if approved, you should get backpay for all the weeks you filed weekly claims during the waiting period.

•That's what I'm hoping for. The waiting is killing me though.

•Same boat here. Been in adjudication for 2 weeks. Trying to get through to Washington ESD to find out what's taking so long.

For anyone dealing with adjudication delays or just needing to check claim status, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier was a lifesaver. I was in adjudication limbo for a month and couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Used their service and got connected to an agent who explained exactly what was holding up my claim and what I needed to do to resolve it.

Amina Sy
•Did they actually help resolve the adjudication issue or just tell you what was wrong?

•The agent was able to see what documents were missing from my file and told me exactly what to upload. Got approved within a few days after that.

•Check if there are any 'To Do' items in your account that need attention. Sometimes claims stay pending because of missing information.

•i dont see any to do items but maybe im looking in the wrong place

•Look under 'Unemployment Services' then 'Your Benefit Application' to see if there are any outstanding requirements.

I'm dealing with something similar. Filed my claim but haven't been able to confirm if everything went through properly. The confirmation page didn't load correctly and now I'm paranoid I need to refile. Anyone know if there's a way to check your filing status?

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look under unemployment services. You should see your claim information there if it was filed successfully.

•Thanks, I'll check that. The website was acting up when I filed so I wasn't sure.

Update: I was able to file my first weekly claim today and it shows as submitted in my account. Now I'm just waiting to see when the payment actually hits my account. Fingers crossed it's the 2-3 business days like you mentioned!

•Great! Make sure you have direct deposit set up if you haven't already. It's much faster than waiting for a debit card.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•Yes, I set up direct deposit when I filed the initial claim. Hopefully that speeds things up.

For what it's worth, my first payment took about 4 business days to show up in my bank account, even with direct deposit. Don't panic if it doesn't appear right at the 2-day mark.

Quick question - do you have to file weekly claims every single week even if you're looking for work? I thought once you filed the initial claim you just had to wait.
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•Yes, you must file a weekly claim every week to continue receiving benefits. Each weekly claim certifies that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•Oh wow, I had no idea. Good thing I asked!

•Also make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Update on my adjudication situation - I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out they needed additional verification of my previous employment. The agent walked me through exactly what to submit and said it should resolve within 5-7 business days.

•That's great news! I might have to try that service too if I can't get through soon.

•Honestly it was worth it just for the peace of mind. Not knowing what was wrong with my claim was driving me crazy.

Just wanted to add that if you quit your job or were fired, the rules about when benefits start might be different. There could be additional waiting periods or disqualifications depending on the circumstances.

Connor Byrne
•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that doesn't apply to my situation.

•Layoffs are usually straightforward. It's voluntary quits and misconduct terminations that can cause issues.

still think the whole system is way too complicated. other states just tell you when you'll get paid instead of all this weekly filing nonsense

NebulaNomad
•The weekly filing is actually to prevent fraud and ensure people are actively looking for work.

Natasha Ivanova
•i guess that makes sense but its still annoying to remember every week

Pro tip: set a recurring reminder on your phone to file your weekly claim every Sunday morning. I missed one week early on and it delayed my payment by several days while I had to explain why I didn't file on time.

Connor Byrne
•Great idea! I'll set that up right now.

•What happens if you miss filing a weekly claim? Can you still get paid for that week?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
•You can usually file late claims but there might be additional questions about why you missed the deadline.

One more thing to keep in mind - your benefit amount is based on your earnings from previous quarters, not your most recent job. So if you had a low-paying job recently but made more money earlier in the year, your benefits might be higher than expected.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•That's interesting. How do they calculate which quarters to use?
0 coins
Isabella Silva
•They use the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed. It's called the 'base period' and should be shown in your claim information.

Final update from me - I was able to reach Washington ESD through that Claimyr service and confirmed my claim was filed correctly. The agent also explained that I should expect my first payment this Thursday since I filed my weekly claim on Monday. Thanks everyone for the help!
