When do Washington ESD unemployment benefits start after filing claim?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when I can expect to receive my first payment. My account shows the claim was processed but I haven't seen any money yet. Do benefits start immediately or is there a waiting period? I've been out of work for two weeks now and really need to know when I can expect some income.

There's typically a one-week waiting period for new unemployment claims in Washington. Your first payment usually comes about 2-3 weeks after filing, assuming no issues with your claim.

•Thanks! So even though I filed last week, I still have to wait another week or two?

Oliver Weber
•Exactly. The waiting week is unpaid, then you'll get your first payment for the following week assuming everything processes smoothly.

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even during the waiting period! I made that mistake and it delayed everything by another week.

•Oh no, I haven't been doing that! Where do I file weekly claims?

•Log into your eServices account on the Washington ESD website. You need to file every week to keep your claim active.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I recently discovered Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you actually reach a live agent instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds helpful! I've been trying to call for days but keep getting disconnected.

•Is this some kind of paid service? Seems sketchy to pay someone to make phone calls for you.

•It's legitimate - they don't ask for your personal info, just help you get connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Worth it when you can't get through otherwise.

ugh the whole system is so confusing!!! why cant they just tell us upfront how long everything takes instead of leaving us guessing

•I feel your frustration. The Washington ESD website does have this information but it's buried in the FAQ section and hard to find.

•exactly!! shouldnt have to hunt for basic info like when we get paid

Your payment timeline depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or reason for separation, it can take several additional weeks.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication? My account just says 'processed'.

Isabella Ferreira
•If it just says processed and you don't see any pending issues, you should be fine. Adjudication claims usually show 'pending' or 'under review' status.

•Mine has said 'under review' for 3 weeks now. This is ridiculous.

Just to clarify the timeline: Week 1 is your waiting week (unpaid), Week 2 you file your first weekly claim, Week 3 you should receive payment for Week 2. So about 2-3 weeks total from filing to first payment.

i remember when i first filed it took forever to figure out the weekly claims thing. you have to do it every single week or they stop your benefits

Amina Toure
•Good to know! I'll make sure to set a reminder to file every week.

•yeah definitely set reminders. they dont send you notifications or anything

The key thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are paid weekly but there's always a one-week lag. So when you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you're claiming for the previous week, and if approved, you get paid a few days later.

Amina Toure
•That makes sense. So I'm always filing for the week that just ended, not the upcoming week?
0 coins
Malik Thompson
•Correct. You're certifying that you were unemployed and available for work during the previous week.

Make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly in your account! My first payment got delayed because I had an old bank account on file.

Amina Toure
•Good point, I should double-check that. Can I change it after I've already filed?

Omar Mahmoud
•Yes, you can update your payment method in your eServices account anytime.

Been through this process twice now. First time took exactly 2 weeks to get first payment. Second time took 4 weeks because they needed to verify my job separation. Really depends on your specific situation.

•What kind of job separation issues cause delays?

Chloe Harris
•Anything where they need to verify you were laid off vs quit vs fired. If there's any question about eligibility.

PRO TIP: Start looking for work immediately even during your waiting week. Washington ESD requires job search activities and they can ask for your log at any time.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•It varies but generally 3-5 job contacts per week. Keep detailed records of where you applied and when.

•This is important! They can disqualify you retroactively if you don't meet job search requirements.

If anyone is having issues getting through to Washington ESD about payment timing, I had success using Claimyr recently. They got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call myself.

•That's the second mention of Claimyr in this thread. Might be worth trying if I run into issues.

•Same here - used them last month when my payments stopped for no reason. Agent was able to explain the issue right away.

•Have you tried calling to check your claim status? There might be an issue you're not aware of.

•tried calling dozens of times, always busy or get disconnected

For anyone still confused about timing: Initial claim filed → One week waiting period → File weekly claims starting week 2 → First payment arrives week 3 (for week 2's claim). This assumes no adjudication issues.

dont forget about taxes! they dont automatically withhold federal taxes from unemployment payments so you might owe at tax time

•Can I choose to have taxes withheld? I don't want a surprise tax bill.

Mateo Martinez
•yeah you can opt for 10% federal withholding in your account settings

Been collecting UI for 6 weeks now. Process gets easier once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims every Sunday. Just make sure you never miss a week!

•Good to hear it gets easier! I was feeling overwhelmed by all the requirements.

•It really does. The hardest part is just getting started and understanding the timing.

One thing that caught me off guard - they send a debit card for payments, not direct deposit by default. Check your mail for the ReliaCard if you haven't set up direct deposit.
0 coins
Amina Toure
•Oh I was wondering about that! I thought everything would be direct deposit automatically.
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•Nope, the debit card is their default method. You have to specifically request direct deposit.

My advice: be patient but persistent. The system works but it's slow. Keep filing your weekly claims even if you haven't gotten paid yet, and document everything.

For what it's worth, I've found calling Washington ESD first thing Monday morning around 8:05 AM gives you the best chance of getting through. Still takes persistence though.

Just want to add that if you worked in multiple states, your claim might take longer to process because they have to coordinate between state agencies. Something to keep in mind.

Amina Toure
•I only worked in Washington so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

•You should be fine then. In-state claims are much more straightforward.
