How long before unemployment benefits start after filing in Washington ESD?
Just submitted my initial unemployment claim through SecureAccess Washington yesterday and I'm wondering how long before unemployment benefits actually start coming in? I got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and I'm already starting to stress about rent next month. The Washington ESD website says to allow time for processing but doesn't give specific timeframes. Has anyone filed recently and can tell me what to expect? I made sure to answer all the questions correctly and uploaded my separation notice.

Usually takes about 2-3 weeks from when you file your initial claim if everything goes smoothly. But you won't get paid until you complete your first weekly claim filing too.

•Wait, so even after they approve my claim I still have to do something else before getting paid?

•Yeah, you have to file weekly claims every Sunday. That's how you actually request the payment for each week.

The waiting period depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything about your separation or work history, it could take 4-6 weeks or longer. Check your account regularly for any notifications.

•How do I know if it's in adjudication? My account just says 'claim processing' right now.

•If it goes to adjudication, your claim status will specifically say 'adjudication in progress' and you might get requests for additional documentation.

I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. Been calling Washington ESD every day trying to get through but the phone lines are impossible. The automated system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate at this point but don't want to get scammed.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just so you know, there's a one week waiting period before you can receive benefits even if your claim is approved immediately. So factor that into your timeline.

•One week waiting period? Nobody mentioned that when I filed!

•It's in the fine print. The first week you're eligible doesn't get paid - it's like a deductible.

depends on ur employer too, if they contest it things get delayed

LunarLegend
•Why would they contest it if I got laid off? That doesn't make sense.

•Some employers contest automatically to try to keep their unemployment tax rates down. It's frustrating but legal.

Make sure you're doing your job search activities while you wait. Washington ESD requires 3 job search contacts per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA.

•I have to start job searching before I even get approved for benefits?
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•Yep, from your first week of unemployment. Keep detailed records because they do audit job search logs.

•This is such BS, they make you jump through hoops while you're already stressed about money

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my employer hadn't submitted their response yet which was holding everything up. The agent was able to send them a reminder.

•How much did that cost you?

•Worth every penny to actually talk to a human instead of getting hung up on constantly. My claim should process this week now.

If you're really hurting for money while waiting, look into local food banks and assistance programs. Most counties have emergency rent assistance too.

•Good point, I should probably look into that just in case.

•211 can connect you with local resources if you dial it. Better to apply early than wait until you're behind on bills.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit in your Washington ESD account ASAP. If you wait for them to mail checks it adds another week to the process.

•Thanks! I'll go update that right now.

•Also make sure your address is correct. I've heard of people not getting their debit cards because of address issues.

honestly the whole system is broken, took me 2 months to get my first payment last year

•Two months?! That's terrifying. How did you survive that long?

•family helped out, credit cards, sold some stuff. it was rough

•That sounds like there were complications with your claim. Most people don't wait that long unless there are employer disputes or eligibility issues.

OP, just keep filing your weekly claims even while you're waiting for initial approval. You can't get paid for weeks you don't file for, even retroactively.

LunarLegend
•Wait, I can file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved?
0 coins
Freya Andersen
•Yes! You should get an email or notification telling you when weekly claim filing opens up for you. Don't miss those deadlines.

Check if your job had any severance or vacation payout. That might delay when you can start collecting benefits.

LunarLegend
•They paid out my unused vacation days. Will that be a problem?

•It might push back your benefit start date depending on how much it was. Washington ESD considers that wages for the period it covers.

I'm in week 4 of waiting and getting desperate. Might try that Claimyr thing too since calling myself isn't working.

•Do it, seriously. I wasted weeks trying to get through on my own.

•Did they actually help resolve your issue or just get you connected?

•They got me to an agent who could see what was holding up my claim. Turned out to be something simple that got fixed same day.

Also make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly is what you get each week, the maximum is the total you can collect over the entire benefit year.

LunarLegend
•How do I find out what those amounts will be?
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•It should show in your Washington ESD account once your claim is processed. It's based on your earnings from the past year.

•Everyone keeps saying this - is it really that important?

•YES! my cousin missed 2 weeks and lost those payments permanently even after his claim got approved

One more thing - if you get a request for additional information or documents, respond immediately. Those have strict deadlines and missing them can disqualify your entire claim.

•How will I know if they need more info?

•Check your Washington ESD account daily and make sure your email is updated. They'll send notifications there.

Realistically expect 3-4 weeks if everything goes smooth. Longer if there are any issues. The system is overwhelmed and understaffed.
0 coins
LunarLegend
•That's actually better than I was expecting based on some of these horror stories.

Luca Russo
•Yeah, most people who post online are the ones having problems. The smooth cases don't usually post about it.

just went through this myself - filed on a Tuesday, got approved the following Friday, first payment hit my account the week after that

LunarLegend
•That's encouraging! No issues with adjudication or anything?

•nope, straightforward layoff with proper documentation. made sure to file my weekly claims on time too

Thanks everyone for all the info! This is way more complicated than I thought it would be. Going to make sure I stay on top of the weekly filing and keep checking my account daily.

One last tip - screenshot everything in your Washington ESD account in case there are system glitches. I've seen people lose documentation when the site has problems.

LunarLegend
•Good thinking. I'll start doing that right away.

•Especially screenshot your weekly claim confirmations. Those are proof you filed on time if there are ever disputes.
