When do I get unemployment benefits after filing my Washington ESD claim?
I filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Thursday and I'm wondering when I'll actually start receiving payments. I lost my job at a restaurant two weeks ago and really need to know when money will start coming in. I've been checking my account on the Washington ESD website but it just shows my claim is being processed. How long does it usually take to get your first unemployment check after you file?

Generally takes about 2-3 weeks after you file your initial claim to receive your first payment, assuming everything goes smoothly. You'll need to file your weekly claims every week starting the week after you file your initial claim. Did you get any paperwork or notices about your claim status?

•I got an email confirmation that my claim was received but nothing else yet. Do I need to do anything while I wait or just keep filing weekly claims?

•Yes, keep filing your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval. That's crucial - if you miss weekly claims you could lose benefits for those weeks.

depends on if your claim goes into adjudication or not. mine took 5 weeks because they had to verify my employment history. if there's any issues with your claim it can take much longer

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication? My account just says 'processing' right now.

•it will usually say 'adjudication in progress' if there are issues. but sometimes it just says processing even when there are problems

I've been through this process recently and honestly, trying to get information from Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible. I spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. What really helped me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this system that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was a lifesaver when I needed to check on my claim status.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Is it legitimate? I'm hesitant to use third-party services for something as important as unemployment.

•Totally understand the hesitation, but it's just a calling service - they don't handle your personal information or anything like that. They just help you get through to Washington ESD's phone lines. Was really helpful when I couldn't get through on my own.

•I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck. Way better than spending all day trying to call Washington ESD yourself.

The timing depends on several factors. If you were laid off (not fired for cause), have sufficient work history, and filed your claim correctly, you should see your first payment 2-3 weeks after filing. However, restaurant workers sometimes face delays if Washington ESD needs to verify tip income or seasonal employment patterns. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday.

•I was laid off due to slow business, not fired. I did work at the restaurant for 8 months before getting laid off. Should I be worried about tip verification?

•8 months should be sufficient work history. Tip verification can sometimes cause delays, but if your employer reported your tips correctly on your W-2, you should be fine. Just be prepared to provide documentation if they ask.

This whole system is so frustrating!!! I filed 3 weeks ago and STILL haven't gotten a single payment. Every time I try to call Washington ESD I get a busy signal or they hang up on me after being on hold for 2 hours. How are people supposed to survive like this??

•i feel you, the system is broken. have you checked if your claim went into adjudication? that could explain the delay

•I can't even get through to find out! The website doesn't give me any useful information either.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - when you're stuck like this and can't get through, having a service that can actually get you connected to an agent makes all the difference.

just file your weekly claims and wait. everyone's always so impatient these days. it takes time to process claims properly

•Easy for you to say when you're not waiting for money to pay rent!

•I think it's reasonable to want to know when to expect benefits, especially when you have bills to pay.

One important thing to remember is that your first payment will be for the week AFTER you file your initial claim, not the week you file. So if you filed last Thursday, your first payable week would be this past Sunday through Saturday. You'll need to file your weekly claim for that week, and if approved, you'd get paid for it in the following week.

Ryder Greene
•That's confusing - so there's always a delay between the week you're claiming and when you get paid for it?
0 coins
Carmella Fromis
•Exactly. Washington ESD pays you for weeks you've already completed and claimed, not in advance. So there's always about a 1-2 week lag between claiming a week and receiving payment.

omg same situation! filed last week and dying to know when money comes in. bills don't stop just because you're unemployed

•Right? It's so stressful not knowing when to expect anything.

If you want to check your claim status more specifically, log into your Washington ESD account and look under 'Weekly Claims' and 'Payment Information'. It should show you if any weeks are pending, paid, or if there are issues. The key is making sure you file every single weekly claim on time, even if you haven't been paid yet.

•I checked and it shows my weekly claim is 'filed' but doesn't show any payment information yet. Is that normal?
0 coins
Arjun Kurti
•Yes, that's normal if your initial claim is still being processed. Once they approve your initial claim, you'll start seeing payment information for your weekly claims.

also make sure you're doing your job searches. washington requires 3 job search activities per week and if you don't log them properly it can delay your payments
0 coins
Ryder Greene
•Oh no, I didn't know about the job search requirement! Where do I log those?
0 coins
Theodore Nelson
•you log them in your weekly claim when you file. they'll ask about your job search activities. better start doing them now if you haven't been

The whole unemployment system needs an overhaul. Two weeks to get your first payment when people are desperate is ridiculous. Other states do it faster.

Carmella Fromis
•While I agree the system could be improved, 2-3 weeks is actually pretty standard across most states for initial processing.

Thanks everyone for all the information. Sounds like I just need to be patient and keep filing my weekly claims. I'll make sure to start doing job searches too since I didn't realize that was required.

•And remember, if you run into any issues or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, don't hesitate to try Claimyr if the regular phone lines aren't working for you.

I got my first payment exactly 14 days after filing. but i had a straightforward case with no complications. restaurant work shouldn't cause any issues as long as your employer reported everything correctly

Ryder Greene
•That's reassuring! My employer seemed pretty organized with payroll so hopefully everything was reported correctly.

make sure you set up direct deposit if you haven't already. getting a debit card in the mail takes longer than direct deposit

Ryder Greene
•Good point! I did set up direct deposit when I filed my claim.

One more tip - if you don't receive your payment within 4 weeks of filing, that's when you should definitely try to contact Washington ESD to see what's going on. Before that, it's usually just normal processing time.

•Good to know there's a timeline for when to actually worry. I'll give it a few more weeks before panicking.

been there! the waiting is awful but most people do get their benefits eventually. just stay on top of your weekly claims

Update on my situation - I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Turns out my claim was stuck because they needed additional verification from my previous employer. Agent was able to expedite the process and I should get my benefits next week. Would have saved me weeks of stress if I'd known about this service earlier!

•That's great news! I'm glad you got it sorted out. I'll definitely keep that service in mind if I run into issues.

restaurant workers unite! lol but seriously, make sure you report any cash tips you got that weren't on your paystubs. they can verify that stuff and it could delay your claim

Ryder Greene
•All my tips were reported through the restaurant's POS system, so I think I should be okay on that front.

The key is just being patient and following the process. File your weekly claims every week, do your job searches, and respond to any requests for information quickly. Most claims get approved without major issues.
