How long does Washington ESD unemployment take to process and start paying?

I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm wondering how long this whole process takes. I've been laid off from my restaurant job and really need to know when I can expect payments to start. My rent is due in two weeks and I'm getting pretty anxious about the timeline. Does anyone know how long Washington ESD typically takes to process claims and when the first payment usually comes? I've heard different things from different people.

It really depends on your specific situation. If your claim is straightforward with no issues, Washington ESD usually processes it within 2-3 weeks. However, if there are any complications or your claim goes into adjudication, it can take much longer - sometimes 4-6 weeks or more.

What kind of complications would cause delays? I tried to be as accurate as possible when filling everything out.

Common issues include employment verification problems, questions about why you left your job, or if there's a discrepancy in your work history. The adjudication process is when they investigate these issues.

I had the same problem trying to reach them by phone. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It was way easier than trying to call myself.

From my experience, the timeline breaks down like this: Initial claim processing takes 1-2 weeks if everything's clean. Then you wait for your first weekly claim to be processed, which is another week. So minimum 2-3 weeks from filing to first payment, assuming no issues. But that's best case scenario.

What do you mean by 'clean'? I'm worried my claim might have issues because I had two part-time jobs.

Having multiple employers can sometimes trigger additional verification, but it's not necessarily a problem. Just make sure you reported all your wages accurately when you filed.

The Washington ESD website says they process claims within 21 days, but that's just when they make a determination. It doesn't include the time to actually receive your first payment. Add another week for the payment to hit your account.

So we're looking at about a month total from filing to getting money? That seems like forever when you're broke.

unfortunately thats about right. the system is just slow. i filed in december and didnt get my first payment until january

One thing people don't realize is that even after your claim is approved, you still have to file weekly claims and meet the job search requirements. Your first payment won't come until after you've filed your first weekly claim and it's been processed.

0 coins

Wait, what are the job search requirements? Nobody told me about that when I filed.

0 coins

You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking activities, etc. It's all explained in your handbook.

And you have to register with WorkSourceWA too. That's required before you can get your first payment.

I've been through this process twice now. First time took exactly 3 weeks, second time took 7 weeks because of some adjudication issue. The uncertainty is the worst part - you just have to wait and hope for the best.

0 coins

What was the adjudication issue about? I'm paranoid mine will get flagged for something.

They questioned whether I was actually laid off or if I quit. Had to provide documentation from my employer. Took forever to resolve.

The whole system is designed to make you give up. They make it as difficult and slow as possible hoping you'll find work before they have to pay you. It's intentional.

That's a pretty cynical view, but I can understand the frustration. The system is definitely overwhelmed.

CYNICAL? Try being unemployed for 2 months waiting for them to process your claim while your savings disappear. The system is broken.

Pro tip: Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed. I made the mistake of waiting until my claim was approved and it delayed my first payment by another week.

0 coins

How do you file weekly claims if your main claim isn't approved yet? That seems backwards.

You can still file them - the system will hold them until your main claim is processed. It's better to have them in the queue ready to go.

I used Claimyr when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my claim status. Worked really well - got connected to an agent who explained exactly where my claim was in the process. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck waiting with no information.

How much does that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

It's worth it for the peace of mind. Being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation is huge when you're waiting for benefits.

My claim took 4 weeks exactly. Filed on a Monday, got my determination letter 4 weeks later on a Wednesday, first payment hit my account the following Tuesday. So about 5 weeks total from filing to money in hand.

0 coins

That's actually helpful to know a specific timeline. Did you have any complications or was it straightforward?

Straightforward layoff from a tech company. No adjudication issues, just normal processing time.

dont forget about the waiting week. even after your claim is approved you dont get paid for the first week. thats just how washington unemployment works

0 coins

Wait, what? So even when everything goes smoothly, you don't get paid for one week?

0 coins

Gabriel Ruiz

•

yep. the first week is a waiting week. you file the claim but dont get paid for it. only subsequent weeks get paid

The key is to stay on top of everything. File your weekly claims on time, keep your job search log updated, respond to any requests for information immediately. Any delays on your end will add to the processing time.

0 coins

Good advice. I'm trying to be super organized about everything but it's overwhelming with all the different requirements.

It is overwhelming at first but you'll get into a routine. The weekly claims become second nature after a few weeks.

I'm going on week 6 with no payment and no explanation. My claim status just says 'under review' with no details. This is affecting my ability to pay for basic necessities. The lack of communication from Washington ESD is unacceptable.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to someone? I've seen several people mention it in this thread and it might be your best bet for getting answers.

0 coins

I'll look into it. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get some information about what's happening with my claim.

For what it's worth, once the payments start coming, they're usually pretty reliable. The initial wait is brutal but after that it's mostly smooth sailing as long as you meet all the requirements.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. Right now it feels like this process will never end.

Hang in there. I know it's stressful but most claims do get processed eventually. The waiting is the hardest part.
