When do you get paid unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
I just filed my first weekly claim yesterday and I'm wondering when I'll actually see the money hit my account. I set up direct deposit when I initially filed my claim about 10 days ago. My claim status shows approved but I haven't received any payments yet. Does Washington ESD pay out on specific days of the week or is it random? I'm stressing because rent is due soon and I need to know when to expect my first payment.

Washington ESD typically processes payments within 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Since you just filed yesterday, you should see the payment by Thursday or Friday if you filed on Tuesday. Direct deposit is usually faster than the debit card option.

•Thanks! That's a relief. I was worried it might take a week or more.

Sebastián Stevens
•Yeah the direct deposit is definitely the way to go. The debit card can take an extra day or two sometimes.

Just make sure your weekly claim didn't get flagged for anything. If there's any issue with your job search activities or if you reported any work hours, it might delay the payment while they review it.

•I didn't work any hours and I logged my three job search activities like required. Hopefully that's all good.

•Three job search activities is correct for most claimants. As long as you kept records of your searches, you should be fine.

I've been getting my payments pretty consistently every Wednesday for the past two months. I usually file my weekly claim on Sunday night and get paid by Wednesday morning. But my first payment took longer because they had to verify some stuff.

•What kind of verification did they need? I'm worried they might ask me for more documents.

Rebecca Johnston
•They just needed to verify my last employer info and my SSN. Took about a week but after that first payment everything has been smooth.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your payment status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I used it last month when my payment was delayed and I needed to talk to someone.

•Interesting, I haven't heard of that before. How much does it cost?

Maya Jackson
•I don't remember the exact price but it was worth it to actually get through to someone instead of being on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

•I've used similar services before for other government agencies. Sometimes it's the only way to get actual help when you need it.

The payment schedule depends on when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD processes payments in batches, usually Tuesday through Thursday. If you filed Monday or Tuesday, expect payment Wednesday or Thursday. If you filed later in the week, it might not process until the following Tuesday.

•Good to know! I filed on Tuesday so hopefully I'll see it Thursday.

•This matches what I've experienced. Tuesday filers usually get paid Thursday.

I'm so anxious about this too! My first payment is supposed to come this week and I keep checking my bank account every few hours. Did anyone else stress this much about their first payment?
0 coins
Sebastián Stevens
•Yes! I was the same way. Once you get the first payment and see the pattern, it gets much less stressful.

Jessica Nolan
•Same here, I've been checking my account constantly today.

•Totally normal to be anxious about it. The first payment is always the most nerve-wracking.

One thing to watch out for - if this is your first claim, there's a one-week waiting period before you're eligible for benefits. So your first payable week might not be the first week you filed. Check your claim summary to see which weeks are actually payable.

Jessica Nolan
•Wait, really? I thought the waiting period was eliminated during COVID?
0 coins
Angelina Farar
•The waiting period was temporarily waived during the pandemic, but it's back now for regular unemployment claims filed after September 2021.
0 coins
KingKongZilla
•This is correct. The waiting period is back in effect for new claims.

Check your payment history in your Washington ESD account online. It should show the status of each weekly claim and when payments were issued. That's the best way to track what's happening with your money.

•I looked but it just shows 'processed' - doesn't give me a payment date.
0 coins
Bethany Groves
•If it shows processed, that usually means the payment has been issued. Should hit your account within 1-2 business days.

I get paid every Wednesday like clockwork. I file Sunday night, it processes Monday, and I get paid Wednesday. Been doing this for 4 months now and it's been consistent.

Jessica Nolan
•That's reassuring to hear it's so consistent once you get into the routine.

•4 months? How long can you collect unemployment in Washington?
0 coins
Tristan Carpenter
•Regular unemployment is up to 26 weeks, but it depends on your earnings history and the current unemployment rate.

Just wanted to add that holidays can delay payments too. If there's a federal holiday during the week, expect your payment to be a day or two later than usual.

Jessica Nolan
•Good point, I didn't think about that.

Angelina Farar
•Yeah, holiday weeks always throw off the schedule a bit.

Pro tip: set up text alerts through your bank so you get notified immediately when the deposit hits. Saves you from constantly checking your account balance.

Jessica Nolan
•Great idea! I'm definitely going to do that.

Nathan Dell
•I already have those set up but somehow I still check my account manually all the time lol

Sebastián Stevens
•Same! The anxiety makes you check anyway even with alerts.

If you don't see your payment by Friday and you filed early in the week, definitely call Washington ESD. Sometimes there are issues that need to be resolved before they can release payment. That's when I used Claimyr again to get through to someone quickly.
0 coins
Jessica Nolan
•I'll keep that in mind if my payment doesn't show up by Friday.

•Good advice. Payment delays usually indicate there's some kind of issue that needs attention.

For future reference, Washington ESD recommends filing your weekly claim on the same day each week to establish a consistent payment schedule. Most people file on Sunday or Monday to get paid by mid-week.

Jessica Nolan
•I'll try to file on Sundays going forward. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!

•Sunday filing is what I do too. Gets the week started right and payments come Wednesday.

One last thing - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you don't see payments right away. Missing a weekly claim can cause delays and you might have to start over with the process.
0 coins
Jessica Nolan
•Definitely, I have it set as a reminder on my phone every Sunday.

Tristan Carpenter
•Smart! I do the same thing. Can't afford to miss a week.

•Exactly right. Consistency with weekly claims is crucial to maintaining your benefits.

Just remember that if you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD customer service, there are options like Claimyr that can help you reach an agent faster. Sometimes you need to talk to a real person to resolve payment issues.

Rebecca Johnston
•I might need to look into that if I have problems in the future. The phone lines are always so busy.

•Yeah, getting through to Washington ESD can be a nightmare sometimes. Good to know there are alternatives.

Great to hear it worked out! For anyone else reading this thread, the Tuesday filing to Thursday payment timeline is pretty typical for Washington ESD when there are no complications with your claim.
