When do I file a claim for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I just got laid off yesterday from my job at a manufacturing company here in Tacoma. My supervisor said it was due to reduced orders and they had to cut staff. I'm not sure about the timing - should I file my Washington ESD claim right away or wait? I've heard different things from coworkers about when to start the process. Some say file immediately, others say wait a week. I don't want to mess this up because I really need the benefits. Also, do I need to have my final paycheck before I can file? I'm supposed to get that next Friday. Any advice would be really helpful.

You should file your Washington ESD claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. You can file online at esd.wa.gov even if you haven't received your final paycheck yet. Washington ESD will ask for information about your final wages later in the process.

•Thanks! I was worried I needed all my paperwork first. Should I file today or wait until Monday?

•File today if you can. The system is available 24/7 online, and there's no benefit to waiting. Your claim effective date will be based on when you file.

Yeah definitely file right away. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks when I got laid off last year and it just delayed everything. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step.

•Did you have any problems with the online application? I'm not great with computers.

•It's pretty straightforward, just have your Social Security number and basic employment info ready. Takes about 30 minutes.

I had such a nightmare trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD when I filed my claim. Spent hours on hold just to ask basic questions. If you run into issues reaching them by phone, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you get through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•That's good to know! I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble getting through to them.

•Never heard of that service but the phone lines are definitely a nightmare. Might be worth checking out.

Just to clarify the timing - you can file your initial claim immediately after your last day of work, but you can't file your first weekly claim until the week after your last day. So if you worked through Friday, you'd file your initial claim over the weekend, then file your first weekly claim the following Sunday-Saturday period.

•This is confusing. So I file the initial claim now, but then I have to wait to file weekly claims?

Zoe Wang
•Exactly. The initial claim establishes your benefit year. Weekly claims are what actually pay you - you file those every week for the previous week.

•I never understood this system. Why make it so complicated?

Make sure you have all your employment history for the past 18 months ready when you file. Washington ESD needs details about every job you had, including start/end dates and reason for leaving. If you quit any job during that period, be prepared to explain why.

•18 months? That's a lot of information. I had a couple different jobs before this one.

•Yeah, it's tedious but necessary. They use that info to determine your benefit amount and eligibility.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You'll need to start looking for work immediately and log your job search activities. Washington ESD requires at least 3 job search activities per week.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews. Keep detailed records of everything.

•The job search log is a pain but you have to do it. They can audit you at any time.

I filed my claim immediately when I got laid off in December and it was the right call. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment, but that was pretty typical. Don't let anyone tell you to wait - there's literally no advantage to delaying.

•Two weeks isn't too bad. I was worried it would take months.

•As long as your claim doesn't go into adjudication, it's usually pretty quick. Adjudication is when they need to investigate something.

The Washington ESD system is online 24/7 so you can file anytime. I always recommend filing on weekends or evenings when the system is less busy. Also, make sure you use a secure computer and keep your confirmation number.

•Good tip about filing during off-peak hours. I'll try tonight.

•Yes, and don't forget to set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already.

One thing to watch out for - if you receive any severance pay, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers severance as wages, so you might have a waiting period before benefits kick in.

Isabella Tucker
•I don't think I'm getting severance, but good to know. How does that work exactly?

Benjamin Kim
•If you get severance, they spread it out over what they consider equivalent weeks of work. So if you get $2000 severance and your weekly wage was $500, that's 4 weeks of delay.

Just file it NOW. I see so many people overthinking this. The worst thing you can do is delay. Even if you make a mistake on the application, you can correct it later. But you can't go back and change your filing date.

•You're right, I'm probably overthinking it. I'll file today.

•Exactly! I delayed filing for a week because I was scared of doing it wrong and I regretted it.

Make sure you understand the difference between your claim effective date and your benefit year. Your claim starts the Sunday of the week you file, and your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from that date. You can't receive more than 26 weeks of benefits during that year (under normal circumstances).

Isabella Tucker
•So if I file today (Saturday), my claim starts tomorrow (Sunday)?

Sarah Ali
•Correct. Washington ESD benefit weeks always run Sunday through Saturday.

I had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD for weeks, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent who helped resolve the issue. Worth having as a backup if you run into problems.

Don't forget to check if your employer contests your claim. Sometimes they'll fight it, especially if they think you were fired for cause rather than laid off. Keep documentation about why you were let go.

•They said it was due to reduced orders and they had to cut staff. Should I get that in writing?

Taylor Chen
•If you can get it in writing, that's great. An email or letter explaining it was a layoff due to lack of work would be helpful if they contest it.

File TODAY. Don't wait for Monday, don't wait for your final paycheck, don't wait for anything. The system is available right now and every day you wait is potentially money lost. I've been through this process three times and immediacy is key.

Isabella Tucker
•Alright, you've all convinced me. I'm going to file as soon as I get home today. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims every week after that. Set a reminder.
