When can you apply for unemployment in Washington - timing questions
I'm getting laid off from my warehouse job next Friday and I'm trying to figure out the right timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. My supervisor said I should wait until after my last day but I've heard different things from coworkers. Some say file right away, others say wait until you actually stop getting paid. I don't want to mess this up and cause delays with my benefits. When exactly should I submit my initial claim application?

You can file your claim the week you become unemployed or have your hours reduced below full-time. Don't wait - file as soon as you know you're losing your job. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim gets processed.

•So I can file before my actual last day? That seems weird but if it gets things moving faster I'm all for it.

•Yes, you can file during the week you become unemployed. Washington ESD wants you to file early to avoid delays in processing.

I made the mistake of waiting too long when I got laid off last year. Filed 3 weeks after my last day and it took forever to get my first payment. File ASAP.

•How long did it take you to get your first check? I'm worried about the bills piling up.

•Took about 6 weeks total because I waited to file. If I had filed right away it would have been maybe 3-4 weeks.

Actually had a similar situation and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask about timing. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally used Claimyr to get connected to an actual agent who explained everything perfectly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD but the phone system is a nightmare.

Freya Collins
•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to a real person. Saved me so much frustration.

•Sounds too good to be true but if it actually works... the Washington ESD phone system is absolutely broken.

The general rule is file during the first week you're unemployed or have reduced hours. Don't overthink it - Washington ESD would rather you file early than late. Your effective date will be set correctly regardless.

•What if you're not sure if the layoff is permanent? My company said it might be temporary but could last months.

•File anyway. If it turns out to be shorter than expected you can always close your claim. Better to have benefits available than scramble later.

I waited because I thought I had to be completely done working but that was wrong. You can file even if you're still employed but having your hours cut. Wish someone had told me that earlier!

•Wait, you can file while still working? I thought unemployment was only for people who lost their jobs completely.

LongPeri
•Nope! If your hours get reduced significantly you can file for partial unemployment benefits. It's called underemployment benefits.

JaylinCharles
•Exactly right. Washington ESD covers partial unemployment too, not just total job loss.

This is so confusing... I keep reading different things online about when to file. Some websites say wait until your last paycheck, others say file immediately. Why can't Washington ESD make this clearer?

•The Washington ESD website does explain it but it's buried in dense text. The simple answer is: file during the week you become unemployed, don't wait.

•I've been to their website like 10 times and I'm still confused. Maybe I need to call them directly.

Filed mine on a Tuesday after getting laid off on Monday. No problems at all. The system asked for my last day of work and handled everything automatically.

•That's reassuring. I was worried about getting the dates wrong and messing up my claim.

•The application is pretty straightforward. Just be honest about your last day and let Washington ESD figure out the rest.

Pro tip: file online on Sunday morning around 6 AM. The system is way less busy then and you won't get kicked out halfway through your application.

•Good advice! I tried filing on a Monday afternoon and the site kept crashing.

•Yeah weekdays are terrible. Early weekend mornings are the sweet spot for Washington ESD online services.

One thing to remember - your waiting week starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. So filing late just pushes everything back further.

•What's a waiting week? I thought you got benefits right away.

LongPeri
•Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore actually. I was thinking of the old rules. You should get benefits starting from your first week of unemployment.

JaylinCharles
•Right, Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago. Benefits start immediately if you qualify.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about timing or any other questions, seriously consider using Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling.

Lucas Schmidt
•I might try that. The regular phone number just rings busy or puts me on hold forever.
0 coins
Freya Collins
•Yeah that's exactly why I tried Claimyr in the first place. The Washington ESD phone system is basically unusable during busy periods.

Don't overthink this. File as soon as you know you're going to be unemployed. I've done this three times over the years and filing early has never caused problems.

Brianna Muhammad
•Three times? That's rough. But good to know the process gets easier with experience.

•Yeah, construction work can be unpredictable. But Washington ESD has been pretty reliable each time I've needed it.

Also worth mentioning - if you're getting severance pay, you can still file your claim. The severance might affect when your benefits start but don't let it stop you from filing.

Sara Hellquiem
•I was wondering about this. My company is giving me two weeks severance. Should I wait until that runs out?
0 coins
Oscar O'Neil
•No, file now. Washington ESD will factor in the severance pay appropriately. Don't delay your claim because of it.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO FRUSTRATING!! Why can't they just have clear instructions instead of making everyone guess? I spent two weeks trying to figure out when to file!

•I get the frustration but the rule is actually pretty simple once you know it. File during the week you become unemployed, period.

LongPeri
•Simple for you maybe! For someone who's never done this before it's completely overwhelming.

Just to summarize for everyone asking: File your Washington ESD claim during the first week you're unemployed or have significantly reduced hours. Don't wait for your last paycheck or worry about exact timing. The system will sort out the details.

For anyone still struggling to get answers from Washington ESD directly, I'll mention Claimyr one more time. It's been a game changer for actually talking to someone when you need help. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•I might actually try this. Spent 4 hours on hold yesterday and got nowhere.

•That's exactly why services like this exist. The regular Washington ESD phone system just can't handle the volume.

Filed mine last Thursday after reading this thread. Application went through fine and I already got my approval notice. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Brianna Muhammad
•That's awesome! How long did the application take to fill out?
0 coins
Sara Hellquiem
•Maybe 20-30 minutes. Most of it was just basic employment history and contact info.

Final reminder: Washington ESD prefers early filing over late filing. When in doubt, file during the first week of unemployment. You can always clarify details later but you can't go back in time to file earlier.

•This should be posted everywhere. Would save people so much stress and confusion.

•Agreed. The timing question comes up constantly in these forums because it's not explained clearly enough.

•Should be pretty quick if everything is straightforward. Keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval.

•That's great to hear! Sometimes we make things harder in our heads than they actually are.

•Exactly. I was so worried about doing something wrong that I almost missed filing altogether.

OK fine, you all convinced me that filing early isn't going to break anything. Going to do it this weekend. Wish me luck dealing with the Washington ESD website...
