When can I certify for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD last week and I'm confused about when I can start certifying for my weekly benefits. The website says something about waiting periods but I'm not sure if that applies to me. I was laid off from my retail job on January 15th due to store downsizing. Do I need to wait a full week before I can submit my first weekly claim? And when exactly do the weekly certifications become available each week?

You'll need to serve a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first unemployment payment. This means the first week you're unemployed won't be paid, but you should still file your weekly claim for that week to establish your claim. Weekly claims typically become available on Sunday for the previous week.

•So I should file for the week I was laid off even though I won't get paid for it? That's confusing but I'll do it.

•Exactly! File for every week you're unemployed, including that first waiting week. It helps maintain your claim continuity.

The weekly claims open up every Sunday at 12:01 AM and you have until the following Saturday to submit them. I always do mine on Sunday morning to get it out of the way. Make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did that week.

•Good to know about the Sunday timing. I was wondering if there was a specific day they opened up.

•Yeah but sometimes the system is slow on Sunday mornings because everyone's trying to file at once. I usually wait until Sunday afternoon.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about my certification timing. Kept getting busy signals and disconnected calls. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much less stressful.

•That sounds helpful! I've been dreading having to call them if I run into issues.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money waiting for benefits to start.

•It was worth it for me to avoid the phone tag nightmare. Check out their site for details.

Since you were laid off on January 15th, that means your first week of unemployment would be January 12-18 (Sunday to Saturday). You'd file your weekly claim for that week starting Sunday January 19th, but you won't receive payment for it due to the waiting week. Your first payable week would be January 19-25.

•This is really helpful breaking it down by actual dates. So I should expect my first payment to be for the week of Jan 19-25?

•Correct, assuming your claim is processed without any issues or adjudication delays.

Just make sure you're doing your job search activities too because they'll ask about that when you certify. You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week unless you're on standby.

•I wasn't told about job search requirements. Where do I find information about what counts as a job contact?

Daniel Rivera
•Check the WorkSourceWA website or your Washington ESD handbook. Applications, interviews, and networking events all count.

•wait i thought it was 2 job contacts per week not 3??

It's actually 3 job search activities per week for most people. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking, or taking approved training classes. You need to keep a log of these activities.

•oh man i've been doing it wrong then. hopefully they don't audit my old claims

PrinceJoe
•You should be fine as long as you start doing 3 per week going forward. They usually only audit if there's a red flag.

The whole system is so confusing! Why can't they just make it simple - you're unemployed, you get money. All these waiting periods and job search requirements just make it harder for people who are already stressed.

•I get the frustration but the requirements exist to prevent fraud and encourage people to actively look for work.

•I guess but when you're worried about paying rent it feels like unnecessary hoops to jump through

One thing that helped me was setting a phone reminder for every Sunday to file my weekly claim. Easy to forget and then you're scrambling to file before the Saturday deadline.

•Good idea! I'll set up a recurring reminder right now.

•Same here. I use the calendar app on my phone to remind me every week.

Does anyone know if you can file your weekly claim early? Like if you know you didn't work at all during the week, can you file on Friday instead of waiting for Sunday?

Daniel Rivera
•No, the system doesn't open until Sunday. You have to wait for the full week to be completed before you can certify for it.

•Makes sense I guess. Just eager to get the process moving.

I remember being so anxious about my first certification. Kept double checking every answer because I was afraid of messing something up. The good news is it gets routine after a few weeks.

•That's reassuring. I'm definitely nervous about making a mistake that could delay my benefits.

•Just answer honestly and you'll be fine. The questions are pretty straightforward.

Make sure you have your Social Security number and PIN ready when you log in to file. Sometimes the system times out if you take too long to complete the certification.

•Good tip! I'll have everything ready beforehand.

If you do run into any issues with your weekly claims or have questions about your benefit amount, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really helped me get answers quickly. Much better than waiting on hold for hours or trying to get through the busy phone lines.

•I might need to look into that. I've been dreading having to call Washington ESD about anything.

•The phone system is definitely frustrating. Getting disconnected after waiting an hour is the worst.

Also remember that if you work part-time while receiving unemployment, you need to report those earnings when you certify. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount based on what you earned that week.

•I'm not planning to work part-time right now, but good to know for future reference.

•Yeah they have a formula for how much they deduct. It's not dollar for dollar which is nice.

The waiting week thing is so stupid. Like we're not already struggling enough financially when we lose our jobs. Other states don't have waiting weeks.

Micah Franklin
•It's been a policy in Washington for years. The legislature would have to change it.

Jessica Nolan
•Well they should change it. It's just another barrier for people who need help.

Quick question - do you have to certify on Sunday specifically or just sometime during the week? I work weekends sometimes and Sunday mornings are hard for me.

Daniel Rivera
•You can certify anytime from Sunday through Saturday. Doesn't have to be on Sunday specifically.

•Perfect, thanks! I'll probably do mine on Tuesday or Wednesday then.

I always screenshot my confirmation page after I submit my weekly claim, just in case there are any disputes later about whether I filed on time.

One more thing - if you forget to file your weekly claim, you might be able to file it late but you'll need to call Washington ESD to explain why. Better to just set that reminder and not risk it.

Ruby Blake
•Definitely setting multiple reminders. Don't want to risk missing a week.

•I missed one week early on and had to call to get it sorted out. Was a hassle but they did allow the late filing.

The whole process gets easier once you've done it a few times. First couple weeks I was paranoid about every question, now it takes me like 5 minutes to complete my weekly certification.

•Looking forward to it becoming routine. Right now everything feels overwhelming.

•Totally understandable. Losing your job is stressful enough without having to navigate government bureaucracy.
