When can I apply for Washington ESD unemployment benefits - timing questions
I'm getting laid off next month and trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. My last day of work is February 15th but I'm getting two weeks of severance pay that will cover me through the end of February. When exactly should I apply for benefits? Can I file before my last day or do I need to wait until after the severance runs out? Don't want to mess this up and cause delays.

You can file your initial claim with Washington ESD as soon as you're unemployed, which would be February 16th in your case. Don't wait until your severance runs out - file right after your last day of work. The severance might affect your benefit payments but you still want to get the claim started.

•Thanks! So I file on the 16th even though I'm still getting severance? Will that disqualify me?

Sean Flanagan
•No it won't disqualify you, but you'll need to report the severance when you file your weekly claims. Washington ESD will calculate how it affects your benefits.

definitely file asap after your last day. i made the mistake of waiting and it delayed everything by weeks. the adjudication process takes forever if there are any issues

•What kind of issues cause adjudication? I'm worried about doing something wrong.

•mostly just conflicting info between you and your employer, or if they dispute your reason for leaving. nothing you can really control

I had a similar situation last year with severance pay. Filed my claim immediately after my last day but had to wait 3 weeks to actually receive benefits because of the severance timing. The key is getting your claim in the system early. Also, if you run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, I discovered claimyr.com which helped me get through to an actual agent when I couldn't get past the busy signals. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that claimyr thing work? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status.

NebulaNomad
•It basically keeps calling for you and connects you when an agent is available. Way easier than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

•Sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?

File your claim within the first week after your last day of work. Washington ESD processes claims faster when you apply promptly. Your severance will be reported as income during your weekly claims, which might reduce your benefit amount temporarily but won't prevent you from qualifying.

•Do I need any special documents when I file? I have my termination letter.

Mateo Martinez
•Your termination letter is good to have. You'll also need your Social Security number, work history for the past 18 months, and bank account info for direct deposit.

DONT WAIT!!! I waited 2 months thinking I had to use up all my savings first and it was a HUGE mistake. You lose out on benefits you could have been getting. File the day after your last day of work.

•Wow, that's good to know. I was thinking I should wait too.

•same mistake i almost made. file early, always file early

One important thing to remember - your benefit year starts when you file your claim, not when you start receiving payments. So filing early protects that benefit year even if severance delays your actual payments.

•That makes sense. Better to have the claim started even if I can't collect right away.

Sean Flanagan
•Exactly. And you'll need to file weekly claims every week, even during the severance period, to maintain your claim.

also make sure you understand the job search requirements. you have to be actively looking for work and keeping a log, even if you're getting severance

•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

NebulaNomad
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep detailed records in case they audit your claim.

Pro tip: apply online at secure.esd.wa.gov on a weekday morning if possible. The system is less busy and you're less likely to run into technical issues.

I'm in a similar boat but my employer is disputing my unemployment. Should I still file right away or wait until that's resolved?
0 coins
Mateo Martinez
•File immediately regardless of any dispute. Washington ESD will handle the adjudication process and you don't want to lose time on your claim. The dispute will be resolved separately.

•Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear. I was worried it would hurt my case somehow.

Question about the severance thing - mine is being paid out as a lump sum on my last day. Does that change when I should file?
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•Nope, still file the day after your last day of work. The lump sum severance will be allocated across weeks when you report it during your weekly claims.
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
•How do they allocate it? Do I get to choose or does Washington ESD decide?
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•Washington ESD determines the allocation based on your normal weekly earnings. It's usually spread over the equivalent time period you would have worked.

Just went through this process myself. Filed on day 1 after my layoff and it took about 10 days for my claim to be approved. The hardest part was actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. Thank god for that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - it saved me hours of calling.

•Did you have to pay for that service? Seems like something Washington ESD should provide for free.

•It's worth it when you consider the alternative is wasting entire days trying to get through. Time is money when you're unemployed.

everyone's giving good advice here but dont forget you need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements

Anastasia Popova
•When do I need to register with WorkSource? Before I file my claim or after?

Zoe Alexopoulos
•you can do it either way but i'd recommend doing it at the same time as filing your claim. one less thing to worry about later

Another thing - screenshot everything when you're filing online. The system sometimes glitches and you want proof of what you submitted and when.

•That's smart. I'll make sure to document everything.

wait so if i file right after my last day but have severance, do i still get unemployment money or not?
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•You might get reduced benefits or no benefits during the severance period, but you'll get full benefits once the severance runs out. The important thing is having your claim active.

•ok that makes sense. better to have the claim started even if i dont get paid right away

For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone after filing, I can't recommend claimyr enough. Used it again last week when I had questions about my job search log and got through in under 30 minutes instead of the usual 3-hour hold times.

•How often do you need to call Washington ESD? I'm hoping once I file my claim I won't need to talk to anyone.
0 coins
NebulaNomad
•Depends on your situation. Most people need to call at least once during their claim period, whether for questions about job search requirements, reporting issues, or claim status updates.

my advice is file asap and then be patient. the system is slow but it works. took 6 weeks to get my first payment but i got backpay for all the weeks i was eligible

Anastasia Popova
•6 weeks?! That's a long time to wait for income.

Amara Eze
•yeah it sucked but the backpay made up for it. just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid yet

Final reminder for OP - file your claim on February 16th, report your severance during weekly claims, keep your job search log updated, and don't hesitate to reach out for help if you run into issues. Washington ESD can be challenging to navigate but the benefits are worth it.

Just want to add that when you file your initial claim, make sure you have your employer's information handy including their federal employer identification number (FEIN) if possible. Washington ESD will need details about your job separation and having all the info ready will make the process smoother. Also, if you worked for multiple employers in the past 18 months, you'll need employment dates and wages from all of them. The more complete your initial application, the less likely you'll face delays or need to provide additional documentation later.
