What qualifications for unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about eligibility requirements
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD but I'm getting confused by all the different requirements I'm reading about online. I worked at a retail store for about 8 months before they let me go last week due to 'restructuring.' I made around $2,800 per month but I'm not sure if that's enough to qualify. I also had a part-time job at a restaurant for a few months earlier this year but only worked weekends. Do they look at all your jobs or just your most recent one? And what about the work search requirements - do I need to apply for a certain number of jobs each week? I've never filed for unemployment before so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Washington ESD looks at your entire base period when determining eligibility, not just your most recent job. Your base period is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So both your retail and restaurant jobs would count toward your earnings requirement. You need to have earned at least $1,000 in your base period and your total base period earnings need to be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings.

•That's helpful! So with my retail job paying $2,800/month for 8 months, I should definitely meet the earnings requirement then. What about the work search part?

•Yes, you'll need to complete 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Washington ESD has specific requirements about what counts as a valid job search activity.

You also need to be able and available for work, which means you can't have any restrictions that would prevent you from accepting suitable employment. Since you were let go due to restructuring (sounds like a layoff), you should qualify as long as you meet the monetary requirements.

•Good to know! They did say it was due to restructuring, so it wasn't performance related or anything like that.

The hardest part honestly is getting through to Washington ESD to actually talk to someone about your specific situation. Their phone lines are constantly busy and you'll spend hours trying to get through. I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you connected to ESD agents without the endless hold times. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to verify my eligibility details.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash which is why I need the unemployment benefits.

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing info, but honestly the time saved vs trying to call ESD directly for hours made it worth it for me.

Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible. In Washington, you can't get benefits for any week before you file your initial claim, even if you were eligible. Don't wait thinking you need to have all your documentation perfect first.

•I was planning to gather all my pay stubs first, but you're saying I should file now and submit documents later?

Mei Zhang
•Exactly. File your initial claim to establish your benefit year, then you can upload documents through the SecureAccess Washington portal as needed.

ugh the whole system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out my eligibility for weeks and every website says something different about the requirements

•The official Washington ESD website has the most accurate information, but I agree it can be overwhelming. Focus on the basic requirements first: earnings, reason for separation, and ability to work.

Don't forget about the waiting week requirement. Even if you're approved, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you start receiving benefits in Washington.

Carmen Ruiz
•Wait, so even if I'm approved I have to wait an extra week? That's going to make things really tight financially.

Amara Eze
•Unfortunately yes, but the sooner you file the sooner that waiting week starts. Don't delay filing your claim.

Something else to consider - if you have any questions about whether your separation qualifies, Washington ESD will investigate it during the adjudication process. Better to file and let them determine eligibility than to assume you don't qualify.

Carmen Ruiz
•What happens during adjudication? How long does that usually take?

Andre Lefebvre
•Adjudication is when they review the details of your job separation. It can take 2-6 weeks depending on how complex your case is and their current workload.

I had a similar situation last year - worked retail and had a part-time job earlier. Both jobs counted toward my base period earnings. The key is making sure you report all your employment history accurately when you file.

Carmen Ruiz
•Did you have any issues with the part-time job affecting your eligibility?
0 coins
Giovanni Ricci
•No issues at all. As long as you report everything honestly, having multiple jobs in your base period actually helps because it increases your total earnings.

The work search requirement is no joke though. You need to do 3 activities per week and keep detailed records. Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other things too?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, skills training, even creating profiles on job sites can count. Check the ESD website for the full list.

Been there with the retail layoffs. Most of those qualify for unemployment as long as it wasn't for misconduct. 'Restructuring' definitely sounds like a qualifying separation.

•That's reassuring. I was worried they might say I didn't qualify for some reason I wasn't thinking of.

Just to circle back on the Claimyr thing - I used it again this week to get through to ESD about a different issue and it worked perfectly. Way better than spending my whole day hitting redial.

•Yeah, their regular phone system is brutal. This actually gets you in the queue properly without all the busy signals.

One more thing - make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is based on your highest quarter earnings, but there's also a cap on total benefits you can receive.
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
•How do they calculate the weekly amount exactly?
0 coins
Dylan Mitchell
•It's roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, but there are minimum and maximum amounts. ESD will calculate it for you when you file.

File online if you can, it's much faster than trying to do it over the phone. The SecureAccess Washington portal works pretty well most of the time.

•Good tip! I'll definitely file online. Is there anything I should have ready before I start the application?

•Have your Social Security card, ID, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. You'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

Don't stress too much about having every detail perfect when you file. You can always provide additional information later if ESD needs it during their review process.

washington esd is actually pretty good about approving legitimate claims, the hard part is just getting through the initial process and staying on top of your weekly filings

•How often do I need to file something after the initial claim?

•every week you want benefits you need to file a weekly claim, usually on sunday for the previous week

I went through this exact same thing 6 months ago. Filed my claim, went through adjudication, and started getting benefits about 3 weeks later. The key is being patient and responsive if they need additional info.

Carmen Ruiz
•That's encouraging! Did they contact you during adjudication or did you just have to wait?

•They sent me a form to fill out about my job separation, but after I submitted that it went through pretty quickly.

Quick question - you mentioned making $2,800/month at retail. That should definitely meet the earnings requirement, probably put you at a decent weekly benefit amount too.

One thing I wish someone had told me - keep copies of everything you submit to ESD. Sometimes they lose documents and you'll need to resubmit.

The whole process seemed overwhelming at first but once I got through the initial filing it became pretty routine. You'll be fine, just take it one step at a time.

Definitely use that Claimyr service if you need to talk to someone at ESD. I tried calling the regular way for two weeks before someone told me about it. Wish I'd known about it sooner!
