What is needed for unemployment benefits in Washington - complete requirements list?
I'm trying to figure out exactly what documentation and requirements I need to gather before applying for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been putting this off because I'm not sure what they'll ask for and don't want to mess up my application. Can someone break down what is actually needed for unemployment claims? I have my last paystubs but not sure what else they require.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation. Also bring your most recent pay stub and any separation paperwork if you have it.

•Thanks! Do I need exact addresses for all my employers or just the main office?

Yara Khalil
•The addresses where you actually worked are best, but main office addresses work too if that's all you have.

don't forget you need to register with WorkSource WA too, that's a requirement they don't always mention upfront

•Is that something I do before or after filing my claim?

•You can do it either way, but I'd recommend doing it right after you file your initial claim. The job search requirements kick in pretty quickly.

Here's what Washington ESD requires for your initial application: valid ID, SSN, complete work history for past 18 months, bank account info for direct deposit, and contact information. You'll also need to be able and available for work, actively seeking employment, and meet the monetary eligibility requirements.

•What are the monetary requirements exactly? I only worked part-time for the last 6 months.

•You need to have earned at least $1,000 in your base year and your total base year wages must be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter earnings. Part-time work can still qualify you.

I struggled with getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my application requirements. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent who walked me through exactly what I needed. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my benefits.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly the peace of mind of talking to a real person about my specific situation was huge.

•That's interesting, I might look into that if I run into issues. Thanks for sharing!

make sure you have all your employment dates EXACT because they will verify everything and if something doesn't match up it can delay your claim for weeks

•What if I don't remember exact start dates from jobs 2 years ago?

•Best estimate is fine, but try to get as close as possible. Check old tax documents or pay stubs if you have them.

You also need to be prepared for the weekly claim requirements once you're approved. They'll ask about job contacts, any work you did, and any income you received each week.

LunarEclipse
•How many job contacts do I need to report each week?

Javier Morales
•It's 3 job search activities per week, but it doesn't have to be just applications. Networking, job fairs, and interviews count too.

•Do I need to keep records of all my job search activities?

Paolo Esposito
•Yes, keep detailed records. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities and you'll need to provide documentation.

The whole process is so confusing and stressful. I wish they just had a simple checklist on their website instead of making you dig through all these different pages.

•totally agree, their website is a mess

•The information is there but it's definitely not user-friendly. That's why forums like this are helpful.

One thing people often miss is that you need to report ALL income, even small amounts. This includes any freelance work, gig economy jobs, or cash payments. Not reporting income can create overpayment issues later.

•What about unemployment from other states? I worked in Oregon briefly last year.

Paolo Esposito
•Include all work history regardless of state. Washington ESD will coordinate with other states to determine your benefit amount.

I had to appeal my initial denial because I didn't understand what they meant by 'able and available' for work. Make sure you understand these requirements before you apply.

•What does able and available actually mean? Can you work part-time and still qualify?
0 coins
Emma Anderson
•You have to be physically and mentally able to work, and available for suitable work. Part-time work is okay but you need to be seeking work that matches your skills and pay history.

also if you were fired or quit your job, be prepared to explain why. they'll ask about it and might investigate

•I was laid off due to budget cuts. Is that straightforward or do I need documentation?
0 coins
Yara Khalil
•Layoffs are usually straightforward, but having a layoff notice or termination letter helps if they have questions.

Don't forget about the waiting week requirement. Your first week of unemployment won't be paid, so plan accordingly.

Amina Toure
•Wait, so even if I'm approved I don't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Malik Thompson
•Correct, the first week is unpaid. It's called the waiting week and everyone has to serve it.

If you run into issues with your application or need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, I had good luck with Claimyr again. They helped me when I was confused about the monetary determination letter I received.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free, but I guess if it saves time...

•I understand the skepticism, but when you're stuck and can't get through on your own, having an option that actually works is valuable.

For anyone filing online, make sure you have a stable internet connection and plan for the application to take 30-45 minutes. Don't rush through it because mistakes can cause delays.

•Can I save my progress and come back to it later?

•I don't think the Washington ESD system saves partial applications, so plan to complete it in one sitting.

Just went through this process last month. The key is being thorough and honest on your application. Any discrepancies will trigger adjudication which can delay your benefits for weeks.

LunarEclipse
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

CosmicVoyager
•It's when they investigate your claim to resolve any issues or discrepancies. Not necessarily bad, but it does add time to the process.
0 coins
Paolo Esposito
•Adjudication can happen for various reasons - conflicts in your work history, questions about why you're unemployed, or issues with your identity verification.

remember to file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. you can't backdate claims very far so don't wait
0 coins
LunarEclipse
•How far back can you backdate a claim?
0 coins
Paolo Esposito
•Generally you can only backdate one week, and only under specific circumstances. It's best to file immediately.

One thing that helped me was making copies of everything I submitted. When they had questions later, I had all my documentation ready.

Just want to add that if you have any military service, that can affect your claim too. Make sure to mention it.

One last thing - if you get stuck anywhere in the process, don't hesitate to get help. Whether it's calling Washington ESD directly or using a service like Claimyr to get through, it's better than guessing and potentially making mistakes.
