What do I need to get unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost about how to apply for unemployment. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I have no idea what documents or information I need to gather before I start. Can someone walk me through what I actually need to have ready? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the last 18 months. That includes company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also need your bank account info for direct deposit.

•Do I need pay stubs or W-2s? I'm worried I don't have all my old pay stubs saved.

Owen Jenkins
•Pay stubs help but aren't required. Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers directly. Having them can speed things up though.

Make sure you have your last employer's exact business name and address. I put down the wrong location and it delayed my claim for weeks while they sorted it out.

•Good point, I'll double check that. Did they eventually fix it or did you have to reapply?

Lilah Brooks
•They fixed it but took forever. Had to call multiple times to get someone to look at it.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to ask questions, I used claimyr.com recently and it actually got me through to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or one of those scammy services?

•It's real, they just help you get through the phone queue. Way better than hitting redial for 3 hours straight.

•I might need that if I run into issues. Thanks for the tip!

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSourceWA too. It's separate from your UI claim but required for job search. Most people miss this step.

Alice Coleman
•Wait, that's a separate website? I thought it was all through Washington ESD.

Evelyn Rivera
•Nope, WorkSourceWA is for job searches and they track your activities. You'll need both accounts active.

also if you worked in multiple states you might need info from those jobs too, learned that the hard way

•I only worked in Washington so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

File your claim as soon as possible but don't file until after your last day of work. The benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job, so timing matters.

Alice Coleman
•My last day was Friday, so I should file this week then?
0 coins
Owen Jenkins
•Yes, file this week. Sunday is usually the best day to file since it starts your benefit week cleanly.

•I filed on a Wednesday and it messed up my weekly claim schedule. Definitely file on Sunday if you can.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE. I've been trying to get through for WEEKS and they keep hanging up on me. The website crashes constantly and the phone lines are always busy. Good luck!

Alice Coleman
•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. How long have you been waiting?

Jade Lopez
•Filed 3 weeks ago and still in 'adjudication' whatever that means. No one will tell me anything.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. Gets you past the busy signals to actually talk to someone about your adjudication status.

Make sure you know exactly why you lost your job. If you were fired they'll ask detailed questions about it during adjudication. Be honest but know your story.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so hopefully that's straightforward.

•Layoffs are usually easier but they might still ask for documentation from your employer.

You can file online at esd.wa.gov but the site is slow during peak hours. Try early morning or late evening for better luck.

•Good tip, I'll try filing early tomorrow morning then.

Quick question - do you need a Washington state ID or can you use an out of state license? I just moved here before losing my job.
0 coins
Owen Jenkins
•Out of state license should be fine as long as it's current and valid. They just need photo ID.

Ella rollingthunder87
•Perfect, thanks! Was worried I'd have to get a new license first.

One more thing - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication (which happens a lot), don't stop filing your weekly claims. Keep filing even if you're not getting paid yet or you'll lose those weeks.

Alice Coleman
•That's really important to know. How do I file weekly claims if my initial claim isn't approved yet?
0 coins
Evelyn Rivera
•The system will let you file weekly claims even during adjudication. Just keep doing it every week until they resolve your case.

•I missed 2 weeks of filing during adjudication and lost those benefits permanently. Don't make my mistake!

Has anyone had luck with the live chat feature on the Washington ESD website? Or is calling the only way to reach a human?
0 coins
Owen Jenkins
•Live chat is extremely limited and usually just refers you to call anyway. Phone is really your best bet.

Jackson Carter
•Which is why services like Claimyr are so helpful - they handle the phone queue nightmare for you.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington has a one-week waiting period before benefits start, so your first payable week is actually your second week of unemployment.
0 coins
Alice Coleman
•Wait, so even if everything goes smoothly I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Maya Diaz
•Correct. The first week is unpaid by law. Benefits start from week 2 if you're eligible.

i filed last month and it was pretty easy actually, just took like 30 minutes online. maybe i got lucky?

•You definitely got lucky. Most of us are stuck in adjudication hell.

•maybe because i was laid off from a big company? they might have had all the right paperwork already

Pro tip: screenshot everything during your application process. If something goes wrong later you'll want proof of what you submitted and when.

Alice Coleman
•Smart idea, I'll definitely do that. Better safe than sorry.

The job search requirement is 3 contacts per week minimum. Start tracking those immediately even if you're still in the application process.
0 coins
Alice Coleman
•Do I need to prove those job contacts somehow?
0 coins
Haley Bennett
•Keep a log with company names, dates, and how you contacted them. Washington ESD can audit your job search at any time.

•I use a simple spreadsheet to track mine. Makes the weekly claims much easier to fill out.

Does anyone know if Washington ESD verifies employment immediately or does that happen during adjudication?
0 coins
Owen Jenkins
•They verify with employers during the adjudication process. That's often what causes delays - waiting for employer response.
0 coins
Nina Chan
•Makes sense why some claims take weeks then. Employers probably aren't quick to respond.

Just want to add that you should apply even if you're not sure you qualify. Let Washington ESD make that determination rather than assuming you won't get benefits.
0 coins
Alice Coleman
•Good point. I was worried about applying if I might not qualify but you're right - let them decide.
0 coins
Ruby Knight
•Exactly. Worst case they say no, but you might be surprised. Eligibility rules are more flexible than people think sometimes.

Final reminder - if you get overwhelmed trying to reach Washington ESD, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier really does work. Used it twice now when I couldn't get through on my own.

•Thanks everyone for all the help! I feel much more prepared now. Going to file my claim Sunday morning and hopefully avoid the worst of the system issues.
