What do I need to collect unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
Lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to file for unemployment. What documents and information do I need to have ready before I start my application with Washington ESD? I don't want to mess this up or have delays because I'm missing something important. Also heard there are weekly requirements - what's that about?

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, employment history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked, reason for separation), and your most recent pay stub. Make sure you have exact dates and don't guess on anything.

•Do I need anything else from my employer like a termination letter?

•Not required but helpful if you have one, especially if you were laid off. Washington ESD will contact your employer directly to verify your separation.

also bank account info if you want direct deposit which is way faster than waiting for the debit card to come in the mail

The weekly requirements are crucial - you have to file a weekly claim every week to get paid, even if you haven't heard back about your initial application yet. You'll also need to do job search activities and report them. For most people it's 3 job search activities per week, but it varies based on your situation.

•What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, taking classes related to work, creating or updating your resume, even informational interviews. Keep detailed records of everything.

•Make sure you register with WorkSourceWA too - that's required and they have job search tools that count toward your weekly requirements.

Just went through this process myself and it was way more complicated than expected. Getting through to Washington ESD by phone was impossible - kept getting disconnected after waiting hours. Finally found out about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually got me connected to a real person at ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of that - is it legit? I'm worried about scams.

•Yeah it's legitimate, they don't ask for any personal info upfront. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent is available. Worth checking out the demo video.

•I was skeptical too but tried it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Actually worked and the ESD agent was able to explain what documents they needed to process my claim.

MAKE SURE YOU APPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! There's a waiting week but you want to get your claim started immediately. Don't wait thinking you might find a job quickly - you can always stop claiming if you get hired.

•What's a waiting week?

•The first week of your claim period you won't get paid for, but you still have to file the weekly claim. It's just how the system works in Washington.

honestly the hardest part was remembering all my job history. had to dig through old tax documents to get exact dates and employer addresses from 2 years ago

•Pro tip: use your W-2s or pay stubs to get the exact employer information. Makes the application much smoother.

Don't forget you need to be able and available to work. If you're planning surgery or a vacation, that can affect your eligibility for those weeks.

•What if I have a doctor's appointment during the week?

•Short appointments are usually fine, it's more about extended periods where you couldn't accept a job if offered. The weekly claim will ask about your availability.

Also be prepared for potential adjudication delays. If there's any question about your separation or eligibility, your claim might get held up for weeks while they investigate. That's when having all your documentation ready really helps.

•How do I know if my claim is in adjudication?

Alina Rosenthal
•You'll see it in your eServices account on the Washington ESD website. It'll show 'Adjudication in Progress' and you won't get paid until it's resolved.

•This is exactly when Claimyr helped me - I couldn't figure out why my claim was stuck and calling ESD was hopeless. The agent they connected me with explained the whole process.

One thing that surprised me - you have to report ANY work or income during your weekly claims, even if it's just a few hours. Don't try to hide anything because they'll find out eventually and it could mess up your whole claim.

•What if I do some freelance work while collecting?

•Report it! They'll reduce your weekly benefit but you won't get in trouble. It's the hiding it that causes problems.

Just a heads up - the online system can be glitchy especially on Sundays when everyone's filing their weekly claims. Try to file during off-peak hours if possible.

•Good to know, I'll avoid Sunday afternoons then.

Quick checklist for OP: SSN, ID, 18 months of work history with exact dates and addresses, bank info for direct deposit, register with WorkSourceWA, file weekly claims every week, do job search activities, keep records of everything. Start your application today if you haven't already.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Going to gather all this info and apply today.

•Don't stress too much about perfection - you can always provide additional info later if needed. The important thing is getting your claim started.

I'm going through this right now too and it's been 3 weeks with no response from ESD about my claim status. Starting to panic about bills.

•Definitely try Claimyr if you need to talk to someone at ESD. That 3-week wait sounds like adjudication and you need answers about what's holding it up.

•Check your eServices account for any notices or requests for additional information. Sometimes they need documents but the notification gets missed.

Also remember you can backdate your claim up to one week if you didn't apply immediately, but don't wait longer than that.

•I was laid off on Thursday, should I backdate to that week or start fresh?

Savannah Glover
•Start your claim for the week you were laid off. You want to capture every eligible week.

been on unemployment twice and honestly the weekly claims become routine after a while. just set a reminder for the same day each week so you don't forget

•you lose that week's benefits and can't go back and claim it later. that's why the reminder is so important

The system is definitely not intuitive. I made mistakes on my first weekly claim and had to call to get it corrected. Another reason why having a way to actually reach ESD staff is crucial.

•Yeah, that's the beauty of Claimyr - you can actually get help when you need it instead of being stuck with confusing online forms.
